Star Wars: The Force Awakens Unlikely To Become The Biggest Film Of All Time

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ is unlikely to top 'Avatar’ to become the highest grossing movie of all time after a disappointing debut in China.

On its opening weekend in the globe’s second-biggest box office market, the film made just $52.6m in two days.

Of course “just” is relative. Even compared to the three day weekend takings of 'Fast and Furious 7’ ($182.4m), 'Avengers: Age of Ultron’ ($155.7m) and 'Jurassic World’ ($99.1m) it pales.

Disney would have been hoping for a strong showing in China to help 'The Force Awakens’ suppass James Cameron’s 'Avatar’ and claim the top spot.

'The Force Awakens’s current total is $1.73bn, placing it third on the all-time list, $1bn behind 'Avatar’ after four weeks on release. In second place sits 'Titanic’, which 'Star Wars’ needs an entirely attainable $450m to surpass.

It appears that to the people of China 'Star Wars’ simply doesn’t hold the same kind of appeal or plce in their hearts. After all, there were few cinemas in the country when the series first started in 1977.

Regardless Disney tried to woo the market, sending 500 Stormtroopers to the Great Wall of China and hiring Chinese pop stars to record promo songs for the film.

In the US and UK 'The Force Awakens’ has become the highest grossing film ever, but this past weekend the film dropped off 50% in the States and was nearly beaten to the top spot by Leonardo DiCaprio’s Golden Globe-winning awards season favourite 'The Revenant’.

The film has already made a killing however and will likely pass $2 billion a the very least, so it’s not like Disney will be shedding many tears over this.
