Starbucks with drive-thru may be coming to Metuchen
METUCHEN – Starbucks, the popular coffee shop chain, may finally be coming to the borough and offering drive-thru service.
Maryland-based applicant Metuchen III is seeking preliminary and major site plan approval to construct a 2,250-square-foot Starbucks with a drive-thru at 700 Middlesex Ave. in the Oakite Site Redevelopment Plan Area. The application is scheduled to be heard at the 7:30 p.m. July 21 Planning Board meeting.
The property is the site of a vacant bank and a recently approved 39,340-square-foot Artis Senior Living facility. The Starbucks is planned for the vacant side of the property along Middlesex Avenue. No changes are planned to the bank structure or the senior living facility, according to a public notice.
The drive-thru coffee shop is permitted in the redevelopment area, but waivers are being sought for the size, width and height of the sign, the number of shade trees and screening around the trash enclosure.
If approved this would be the first Starbucks in Metuchen, according to borough officials. Starbucks has several locations in neighboring Edison.

Currently there are other coffee shops in Metuchen including Cai Cafe and Brewed Awakening, both on Main Street, and Bigby Coffee on Middlesex Avenue. Coffee is also available at Cafe Paris on Main Street, WFM Coffee Bar on Middlesex Avenue, Hatch 44 Cafe on Durham Avenue and Angie's Cafe and Bakery on Amboy Avenue.
Starbucks opened its first store in Seattle in 1971 offering fresh-roasted coffee beans, tea and spices from around the world for customers to take home. As of April 2022 Starbucks has 34,630 shops worldwide, according to the company's website
