Starburst, Skittles, and Life Savers Gummies Recalled

Mars Wrigley Confectionery issued a recall of some varieties of Starburst, Skittles, and Life Savers Gummies after receiving complaints from consumers who found thin, metal strands in the candy or loose in the bag. The candies were shipped to stores in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. According to the company, no illnesses have been reported.

The recalled products include the following flavors and package sizes. In addition, they have the numbers listed below as the first three digits of the 10-digit manufacturing code on the back of the packages:

• Skittles Gummies Original, 2.93 oz., 5.8 oz., and 12 oz. packages. First three digits: Any number between 139 and 218.

• Skittles Wild Berry Gummies, 2.93 oz., 5.8 oz., and 12 oz. packages. First three digits: Any number between 138 and 218.

• Skittles Sour Gummies, 5.8 oz. packages. First three digits: Any number between 204 and 218.

• Starburst Gummies Original, 3.5 oz. and 5.8 oz. packages. First three digits: 136, 139, 140.

• Starburst Gummies Sours, 3.5 oz. and 5.8 oz. packages. First three digits: 134, 135, 137, 138, 139, 140, 141, 142.

• Starburst Gummies Sour Berries, 5.8 oz. packages. First three digits: 135, 138, 139.

• Life Savers Gummies Five Flavor, 3.22 oz. and 7 oz. packages. First three digits: 136, 139.

• Life Savers Wild Berries Gummies, 7 oz. packages. First three digits: 136, 137, 138, 140, 147, 149, 150, 151, 152.

• Life Savers Sour Gummies, 7 oz. packages. First three digits: 132 133, 134, 139, 140, 144, 145, 146, 147, 149, 151, 152, 201.

Consumers who have packages of these candies should throw them away, Mars Wrigley said in a statement. The company did not immediately respond to CR’s request for further comment.

“The recalled candies are reportedly still for sale on store shelves,” says James E. Rogers, PhD, director of food safety and testing at Consumer Reports. “So be cautious when buying gummy candy and report any metal or other objects in the package you may find to Mars Wrigley or the FDA.”
