CANTON TWP. – The Stark County Sheriff's Office is trying to identify a woman whose body was found in a lot Wednesday evening.

Deputies were called just before 4 p.m. after a passerby found the body on private property described as a scrap yard in the 3700 block of Georgetown Road NE. The lot is littered with abandoned cars, boats and other vehicles. It is just a few hundred feet from the Republic Steel Canton Plant.

The body was described as a white female with reddish-brown hair in her mid-30s.

Michaela Thomas, a spokesperson for the Sheriff's Office, said the body is at the coroner's office where an autopsy will be performed. It is unclear how the woman died.

Investigators are trying to determine the woman's identity and ask anyone who might have a loved one that fits the description and they have not heard from them to call the sheriff.

The Sheriff's Office does not have any missing persons matching the woman's description, she added.
