Belden Village Mall has yet to announce the winner of its Taste for the Space competition, almost two months after the event. On June 4, the mall hosted the food competition to find a new tenant.

Nine competing restaurants – Big A#$ Salads, Blue Smoke, The Cheesecake Bar LLC, Daisy Pops, iRiE Jamaican Kitchen, Merrybrook Baking Co., Poagies BBQ, SOL Pie Pizza and Taco Buddy – were vying for a total prize worth $140,000. This includes a $50,000 investment and six months' free rent at an eatery space in the mall.

All nine restaurants shared signature dishes with the crowd. Community members then voted via text message for their favorite restaurant, and the judging panel, comprised of eight people influential in the local food community alongside two Belden Village Mall tenant managers and representatives from the mall’s corporate owner, scored the competing restaurants.

After the event, the mall tallied the votes, reviewed comments and scores from the judges and met with its leasing team to review the top restaurants’ business plans. The idea is to make sure that whichever restaurant is chosen will be able to be a long-term tenant.

Since the event, Belden Village Mall’s marketing and business development manager Alisa Carl, who ran the event, has left the company.
