Stark County Amateur Basketball Association Hall of Fame to enshrine 2023 class

The Stark County Amateur Basketball Association Hall of Fame will induct 11 new members during it 79th annual banquet on May 16 at Tozzi's on 12th.

The class of 2023 includes Dana Alston, Betty Aman, Don Gensley, Jennifer (Miday) Martinez, Mike Miday, Frank Millin, Jerry “Doc” Prestier, Jamie Rubis, Pete Spencer, David Shanklin and Steve Watson.

2023 all-county girls basketball: Northwest's Lily Bottomley, Kevin Lower headline All-Stark County girls basketball honors

DANA ALSTON: Played in numerous Stark County basketball leagues as well as Akron Men's City League and the Afri-Can and Kaleidoscope Tournaments.

BETTY AMAN: High-scoring Tuslaw great who participated in numerous recreational leagues in multiple counties. Won eight championships in Massillon YMCA Rec League.

DON GENSLEY: Played on Canton McKinley’s 1941 state quarterfinal team. Outstanding local player. Played on Navy team that faced the Harlem Globetrotters numerous times.

JENNIFER (MIDAY) MARTINEZ: Member of 2002 North Canton Hoover state championship team before going on to play at Ashland University. Played in First Friends Basketball League and coached on high school, AAU and rec-league level.

MIKE MIDAY: Timken High School standout who scored school-record 57 points in a game. Played briefly at Indiana before playing three years for Bowling Green. Later won numerous league championships at North Canton YMCA, Canton CYC, First Friends and J.Babe Stearn.

FRANK MILLIN: Played in variety of Stark County rec leagues. Won Canton City League championships three out of five years playign for M&D Construction.

JERRY “DOC” PRESTIER: Won multiple championships in Six Foot and Under League, Tim's Tavern League and Freeway Tavern League. High scorer and deadly shooter with performances of 57 and 66 points to his credit.

JAMIE RUBIS: Standout player at North Canton Hoover and Kent State, scoring 1,436 and 1,281 career points in high school and college, respectively. Later moved to Wisconsin where she played in Madison and Milwaukee rec leagues and coached middle school girls basketball for eight years.

PETE SPENCER: Massillon graduate with a 30-plus-year amateur basketball career. Played in Walther’s Café League from 1998 to 2015, winning five championships. Played in Massillon Rec League for five years, winning three championships.

DAVID SHANKLIN: Former Tuslaw star who played for 30-plus years in Massillon Rec League. Played in numerous other leagues and in variety of state and national tournaments.

STEVE WATSON: After stellar basketball career at Lehman and college baseball career at Ohio State, played 10-plus years in Canton Six Foot and Under League and First Friends League. Volunteer coach at J. Babe Stern Center. Longtime high school and middle school basketball coach.
