Self-defense seminar is March 22

ALLIANCE – The Friends of Rodman Public Library is sponsoring a self-defense seminar fundraiser from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. March 22 inside the Rodman Main Auditorium. The cost is $20. Anyone 12 and older can sign up to take part in the class.

Wayne Burley, owner of C.O.B.R.A. Defense Canton, will teach the class. He has 36 years of experience in defensive tactics instruction and is a sixth-degree master level instructor in martial arts. He holds a degree in education from Malone University and a master’s degree in fitness management from the U.S. Sports Academy. He recently was inducted into the U.S. Kido Federation Black Belt Hall of Fame.

Tuesday is Pi(e) Day at library

ALLIANCE – Rodman Public Library will have a special Pi(e) Day for teens from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Pi, which is represented by the symbol for the Greek letter of the same name (π), is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, approximately equal to 3.14159. Thus, every March 14 (3.14), pi, a number that mathematicians have attempted to expand their understanding of for thousands of years, is celebrated.

Teens ages 12-18 can take part in several Pi(e) Day activities, including a blind taste-test of pie filling, rating their favorite pie, a pie eating contest, making a polymer clay pie key chain and making a pi number chain bracelet. The event is free. Friends of Rodman Public Library will provide all food and materials for the event.

Mount Union Faculty Lecture is Tuesday

ALLIANCE − The University of Mount Union, 1972 Clark Ave., will hold its Faculty Lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Presser Recital Hall. The lecture will feature Melissa Askren Edgehouse.

Askren Edgehouse is a professor of education and School of Education accreditation coordinator at Mount Union. She has been a faculty member since 2009 and will present “Covid and EdTech: How a Pandemic Forever Changed the Way We Teach.” Tickets are free, though required. Askren Edgehouse earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Mount Union, a master's in administration and supervision from Ashland University and a doctorate in leadership studies from Bowling Green State University. She co-leads the Accreditation Coordinators' Group in Ohio and is president-elect of the Ohio Association of Private Colleges for Teacher Education. She recently served a term on Ohio's Educator Standards Board and was awarded Mount Union's 2022 Distinguished Service Award.

Pick up a Swiss steak dinner Saturday

BEACH CITY – Beach City American Legion Hall Post 549, 125 Third Ave. NE, is having a drive-thru carryout only Swiss steak dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. (or whenever the food runs out) Saturday. Watch for signs where to enter.

The meal features three-bean salad, applesauce, mashed potatoes with homemade gravy, corn, bread and dessert for $12.

Anime, cupcakes, Legos, cartoons at library

CANAL FULTON – The Canal Fulton Public Library has announced several programs for this week. To register, call 330-854-4148.

  • Teen Anime Club, 5:30 p.m. Monday: Anime fans can enjoy anime, snacks and learn about Japan’s White Day at this teens-and-tweens only event. Registration is appreciated, but not required.

  • Cupcake Wars, 6 to 7 pm. Tuesday: Decorate cupcakes and vote on your favorites. All materials will be provided. For ages 3-12.

  • Lego Free Play, 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday: Children in kindergarten through grade 5 can create their own Lego masterpieces. Registration is required.

  • Saturday Morning Cartoons and Crafts (for adults and teens), 11 a.m. March 18: Enjoy cartoons, cereal and simple crafting. For ages 13 and up. Registration is required.

  • Third Tuesday Book Discussion, 6 p.m. March 21: The group will discuss "Carnegie’s Maid" by Marie Benedict. Copies of the book are available in advance at the Circulation Desk.

Canton Parks and Recreation announces events

CANTON – Canton Parks and Recreation has scheduled a Mother-Son Dance Party from 6 to 8 p.m. March 31 at the Edward "Peel" Coleman Center, 1400 Sherrick Road SE.

The evening will feature food, a photo booth and a DJ. All mother figures are welcome. The cost is $25 per couple and $5 per additional child. Children must be at least 5 to attend. Register at cantonparksandrec.com by March 24.

Canton Parks and Recreation is taking registrations now for the Sweat Now, Wine Later Adventure Race to be held May 13. The fee schedule is $65 for registrants from March 1 to 31; $75 for registrants from April 1 to 30. Racers will kayak 1.5 miles downstream, then run/walk 2.5 miles of the Middle Branch Trail to Gervasi Vineyard. Transportation, kayaks, paddles and life jackets will be provided. Each registrant will receive a race shirt, commemorative finisher medal and a voucher for food, beverage or merchandise at Gervasi Vineyard. Awards will be given for the top 10 overall male and female racers.

Stark County Hunger Task Force sets volunteer open house

CANTON – Stark County Hunger Task Force will hold its first volunteer open house from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Ken Weber Community Campus at Goodwill, 408 Ninth St SW.

Staff and volunteers will lead tours through their pantry, warehouse and backpack spaces, and provide information to acquire volunteers for various opportunities. Light refreshments will be provided.

Rock group America to perform Thursday at Palace

After-abortion support group will meet Wednesday

CANTON – Hope and Healing’s Women of Worth after-abortion support group will meet this Wednesday, and the third Wednesday of each month, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Women of Worth is a monthly support meeting for women with a shared abortion experience. The meeting is confidential, non-judgmental and non-political, the group said. Call or text 330-834-8224 for details and location information.

Craft show next Sunday

JACKSON TWP. − Lake Cable Woman’s Club 42nd Semiannual Craft Show will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 19 at the Lake Cable Clubhouse, 5725 Fulton Drive NW.

Civil War Roundtable to meet Thursday

LAKE TWP. − The Stark County Civil War Roundtable will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, 3088 State St. NW.

John W. King will portray Abraham Lincoln in a presentation about Lincoln's trip to Washington to be sworn in as the 16th president and the four-year struggle to save the Union.

International Dinner at Walsh University is March 25

NORTH CANTON – Walsh University’s annual International Dinner and Cultural Fair sponsored by the World Student Organization will be March 25 at the Cecchini Family Health and Wellness Complex inside the Auxiliary Gymnasium, on the west side of campus.

The event celebrates the heritage and diversity of Walsh University’s international community. It is open to the public and features buffet-style, international cuisine prepared by Walsh University’s international students.

Doors open at 4:30 p.m., the program begins at 5 p.m., and dinner will be served by 5:30 p.m. Entertainment by students and guests following dinner includes an international fashion show, singing and dancing performances.

Ticket prices are $15 per adult and $5 for students. Children younger than 5 are admitted free. Advance reservations are required; visit www.walsh.edu/internationaldinner.

Book sale at library March 22-26

NORTH CANTON – The Friends of the North Canton Library spring book sale will be open to the public March 23-26 at the North Canton Public Library, 185 N. Main St.

The sale, which includes DVDs and CDs, will end one hour before the library’s closing time each day. Most items will be priced from 50 cents to $2.
