Children’s Toy Fund’s Bear Drive begins this week

CANAL FULTON – Children’s Toy Fund’s Bear Drive for Akron Children’s Hospital and Aultman Hospital runs Wednesday through Dec. 11. CTF, a Canton-based 501(c)(3) is partnering with Keillor's A Teddy Bear Shoppe to select and purchase stuffed animals for the donation box. CTF will match all purchases and donations up to $5,000.

To ensure that hospitals receive allergen/pathogen-free furry friends (no pet hair, smoke, etc.), CTF collaborates with Keillor’s to provide new stuffed animals.

Anyone can participate in this initiative by shopping at Keillor’s Teddy Bear Shoppe at 117 N. Canal St. Those who wish to donate toward this Bear Drive can do so online through PayPal or Children’s Toy Fund’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/childrenstoyfundbingo/), or in person at Keillor’s store or the Children’s Toy Fund Bingo events held every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday starting at 4:30 p.m. at 2401 Swiss Ave. SW, Canton, or mail to 2401 Swiss Ave. SW Canton, OH 44706. Place bids, eradicate hunger

CANTON − StarkFresh, a Canton-based nonprofit creating pathways out of poverty, will hold its annual online auction Wednesday through Nov. 19.

All items will be available for pickup by appointment after Nov. 20th at the Food Justice Campus in downtown Canton.

Some of the item highlights include Super Bowl tickets, golfing trips across the United States and in Tuscany, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Broadway tickets, CMA awards, NCAA final four tickets, America’s Cup Yacht Sailing, Kentucky Derby tickets, Rockefeller Center tree lighting VIP experience, Metropolitan Opera tickets, PGA Tour tickets, and luxury trips.

Foster/adoption meetings Nov. 7 and Dec. 5

CANTON − Stark County Job & Family Services will hold information meetings about becoming a foster and adoptive parent. An in-person meeting will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Division of Children Services, 402 Second St. SE. Those unable to attend in person may attend a virtual meeting from 6 to 7 p.m. Dec. 5 via Zoom.

Attendees can talk with a licensing specialist, ask questions about the foster care and adoption process, and meet other families. Meetings are free and open to the public. American Red Cross BASHfest is Nov. 18

CANTON – The American Red Cross of Heartland, Stark, and Muskingum Lakes will host the inaugural BASHfest - A Holiday and Hero Celebration on Nov. 18 at the Hall of Fame Village, 2626 Fulton Drive NW.

The event will showcase the Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces programs and feature a silent auction for specially designed holiday trees. Local artists are encouraged to submit tree designs for the auction with all profits going to support the work of the Red Cross throughout Ashland, Carroll, Harrison, Holmes, Stark, Tuscarawas, and Wayne counties.

The Red Cross will also present the inaugural Stanley C. Gault Award to community leader Greg Long and the Jack B. Liberator Award to Dennis Nash and Carl Young, co-founders of The Kenan Advantage Group Inc.

Christkindl Markt this week

CANTON – Christkindl Markt, a juried fine arts and crafts show, will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Canton Museum of Art and Cultural Center for the Arts, 1001 Market Ave. N.

Admission is $8, with ages 12 and younger admitted free. Parking is free.

The Markt Bistro will sell sandwiches and light snacks and The Sweet Shoppe will offer homemade candy. There will be a silent auction, book shop plus Golden Ticket and Grand Raffles and a selection of gift baskets supported by local and regional businesses. Andrea’s of Sugarcreek will provide a $1,000 shopping spree door prize.

Trick-or-Treat in the Terminal is Tuesday

GREEN − The Akron-Canton Airport, 5400 Lauby Road NW, will host Trick-or-Treat in the Terminal from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31.

Admission to the not-so-scary event inside the terminal (pre-security) will be free. The event will include treats, crafts, Touch-a-Truck and photo opportunities. Parking is free in long-term Lot A. Passes will be handed out at check-in, which will be located just inside Door 3. No registration is required.

Costumes must be family-friendly and may not be obstructive, offensive, objectionable or violent. Costumes may not contain any weapons that resemble or could easily be mistaken for an actual weapon.

Prospective students invited to discover Stark State College

JACKSON TWP. – Two Discover Stark State events during next month can help students find their best educational and career fit. The events include three sessions between 5 and 7 p.m. Thursday at main campus at 6200 Frank Ave. NW and Nov. 8 at 360 Perkins St. in Akron.

Prospective students and their families will hear from the president, faculty and staff, tour labs and classrooms, talk with career specialists and advisers, get help from admissions and financial aid experts, and get a free T-shirt.

Open house, antiques fair and appraisal at Jackson Township Historical Society

JACKSON TWP. – Jackson Township Historical Society, 7756 Fulton Drive NW, will hold an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Nov. 5.

This is the last day for the display Life in the Township 1921-1950. Memorabilia and photographs from schools, families and businesses are on display. Members will be available to answer questions. Admission: $5 (ages 14 and up). Members are free.

The Historical Society’s inaugural antiques fair and appraisals will be 3 to 7 p.m. Nov. 10 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 11. Browse and buy from four local dealers selling antiques, estate jewelry and decorative arts.

Bring in your heirlooms for appraisals by Jason Adams of Kiko Auctioneers. Take detailed pictures of weapons and furniture. Any two items will be appraised for a $10 donation to the Historical Society.

BullyRun Coffee of Massillon will be serving gourmet coffee, specialty drinks, food and pastries. Admission is $5 (ages 14 and up). Members are free.

Craft show next Sunday

JACKSON TWP. − Lake Cable Woman’s Club 42nd semi-annual craft show will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 5 at the clubhouse, 5725 Fulton Road NW, featuring quality, handmade craft items and raffle baskets. Admission is free. Homemade soups, sloppy joes and chicken salad croissants will be available for purchase. Boy Scout Troop 927 has a flag disposal box available.

Navarre-Bethlehem Township Historical Society to meet Wednesday

NAVARRE − The Navarre-Bethlehem Township Historical Society will hold a meeting at 10 a.m. Wednesday, followed by a pizza lunch. All members are welcome.

Following the lunch, the museums will be closed until June and the Historical Society's office in the Heritage Education Building will be closed for the holidays.

Historical Society business will resume the first Wednesday in January with the Heritage Education Building being open most Wednesdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. except when the Fairless School District closes for inclement weather.

Calendars are being offered for sale at Agnes Meats, Real Deals, Rise up Cafe, Scriptshop Pharmacy, and Navarre Village Hall during their regular business hours. You can also buy a calendar at the Heritage Education Center until Nov. 1. The cost is $8. This year's theme is local artists' renderings of the township through oils, acrylics, pencil and watercolors.

Next spring when the Historical Society opens, the Linda Hug Art Gallery will have one room dedicated to local artwork. It will be open to the public throughout the summer from 9 to 11:30 Wednesday mornings or by appointment. Call 330-879-5983 to set up an appointment.

Donate items to the Humane Society, get flowers

PLAIN TWP. – Cathy Cowgill Flowers, 4315 Hills and Dales Road NW, is inviting people to participate in its annual donation week this Monday through Saturday to support the Stark County Humane Society. Bring three or more items and receive a free bouquet of flowers.

Needed items are canned cat food, dry dog and cat food, blankets, dish soap, cat litter, leashes and collars, ice cube trays, dog and cat bowls, toilet paper, canned dog food, flea shampoo, bleach, copy paper, 9-by-13-inch metal cake pans, chicken broth, cotton balls, mineral oil, paper towels, cloth towels and liquid laundry detergent.
