Book sale in Alliance

ALLIANCE – Friends of Rodman Public Library will sell used books, DVDs, CDs, magazines, puzzles and board games Aug. 6-10 at the Alliance Neighborhood Center, 405 S. Linden Ave.

The sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 6 will be for Friends of Rodman Public Library members only. Sale hours for the public are 1 to 5 p.m. Aug. 7 and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 8-10.

On Aug. 10, shoppers can fill a bag and make any donation they wish. Cash, checks and credit cards will be accepted, but there will be a 3% processing fee on all cards. Attendees should approach from the Arch Avenue side of the building and enter through the Door No. 4 ramp.

Pond workshop

BETHLEHEM TWP. – Stark Soil & Water Conservation District will offer a workshop for pond owners and managers at 6 p.m. Aug. 8 at the North Industry Sportsman Club’s fishing pond, 7825 Beth Ave SW.

Participants will learn about cover aquatic plants and algae identification to help formulate a vegetation management plan. The workshop also will look at the sportsman’s club aeration system, which has helped maintain a healthy ecosystem with the pond. To register, visit starkswcd.org or call 330-451-7645.

Recycling District gets grant

BOLIVAR – Three projects in the Stark-Tuscarawas-Wayne Recycling District have received a Recycle Ohio Grant from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.

The total of nearly $44,800 will be used toward outreach and education for the district.

The Ohio EPA also awarded a $21,571 Community and Litter Grant to the Wayne County Farm Bureau for a Tire Amnesty Collection Program.

Ohio EPA is issuing more than $5 million in grants to 89 recipients, with $3.2 million specifically for community and litter prevention programs.

Community and Litter Grants are available to local governments, parks or health departments, state colleges and universities, solid waste authorities, and nonprofit organizations or Keep America Beautiful communities to support and expand community recycling and litter prevention efforts. Market Development Grants assist businesses that buy equipment and infrastructure for successful markets of recyclable materials and related products.

Sensory Play Time at library

CANAL FULTON – The Canal Fulton Public Library, 154 E. Market St., will offer Sensory Play Time for children up to age 3 with a parent or caregiver at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Aug. 16 and 18.

The program contains hands-on activities that help build fine motor and gross motor skills. Activities can include materials that may be messy or wet. Some activities change from session to session. Registration is required; call 330-854-4148.  

Family-friendly movies

CANTON – The Centennial Plaza Movie Series will show "American Underdog" on Wednesday, "Ferris Bueller’s Day Off" on Aug. 10 and "Wonder" on Aug. 17.

The free movies begin at 7 p.m. on the downtown plaza.

The Palace Theatre, 605 Market Ave. N, will show the children’s movies "Sing 2" on Monday and "Inside Out" on Aug. 8. Movies begin at 1 p.m., and doors and the box office open at noon. Admission is $2.

Blount to speak at youth rally

CANTON – Pro Football Hall of Famer Mel Blount will speak at noon Friday at the Community Gold Jacket Youth Rally at the Community Drop In Center, 1492 Cherry Ave. SE.

Bicycles will be raffled off for free, but winners must have a ticket and be present when winning numbers are called. Attendees can enjoy free food and activities such as bounce houses, face painting, water slides and a puppet show.

Bands to perform

CANTON – The Jim Davidson Band will play Aug. 7 and Hot Cargo Band will perform Aug. 14 at the Canton Country Music events at the Polish American Club, 1605 Henry Ave. SW.

Music is from 2 to 5 p.m. Food is available as well as 50-50 drawing and a lottery tree. Admission is $3 at the door, and the public is welcome.

Cubers Club at Dover library

DOVER – Those who want to hone their skills with a Rubik’s Cube are invited to participate in the Cubers Club at the Dover Public Library, 525 N. Walnut St.

The club meets at 6 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month. Andy Basnett will be on hand Thursday in the lounge at the library to give tips and strategies on how to improve solve time. Enthusiasts of all ages are welcome.

Christian band to perform

JACKSON TWP. – The nine-member King’s Brass band will perform at Church of the Lakes, 5944 Fulton Drive NW, at 7 p.m. Friday. The Christian group features both sacred and secular music.

The event is free, but an offering will be taken.

Music, kids' events, food

JACKSON TWP. – Daniel Gray, Hot as Funk! will perform a free concert from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Jackson Amphitheater, 7454 Community Parkway.

The amphitheater also hosts free children’s events. Outback Ray and his Amazing Animals will appear from 3 to 4 p.m. Monday. Jackson Township and the Paul & Carol David YMCA will present a program for kids, "Oceans of Possibilities," from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Aug. 10. Children will learn about oceans and discover creatures that inhabit their waters.

Barb Craven of Craven Dance Studio will lead children in exercising, singing and creative movement through music in a 45-minute session beginning at noon Wednesday and Aug. 10.

Food trucks are on site Wednesdays starting at 11:30 a.m. until the free concerts are over. Farmers markets are from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays through Sept. 28.

Celiac Support Group event

JACKSON TWP. – The Stark County Celiac Support Group will host an indoor picnic at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Church of the Lakes United Methodist Church, 5944 Fulton Drive NW.

Grant applications sought

MASSILLON – The Massillon Rotary Foundation is accepting grant applications through Aug. 31 from nonprofit organizations that sponsor projects focusing on health, wellness and other charitable purposes.

The foundation provides grants specifically for the Massillon and western Stark County areas. Grant applications are reviewed quarterly. Applications and guidelines are available via the link at www.massillonrotary.org under the Rotary Foundation tab.

Twitty and Lynn tribute

MASSILLON – The Lions Lincoln Theatre, 156 Lincoln Way E, will present "Twitty & Lynn: A Salute to Conway & Loretta" from 3 to 5 p.m. Aug. 7.

Tayla Lynn and Tre Twitty, grandchildren of famed duo Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty, will honor their grandparents in an evening of music and storytelling.

Rodeo in Minerva

MINERVA – The Minerva Chamber Rodeo will be Saturday at Municipal Park on Brock Avenue.

Children’s activities will begin at 3 p.m. Kids’ rodeo events will begin in the arena, with stick-horse races and preliminaries for mutton busting, in which children weighing 50 pounds or less compete to see who can stay on the back of a sheep the longest. Helmets and vests will be provided.

The rodeo begins at 7 p.m. In addition to bull riding, bareback bronco riding, saddle bronco riding, calf roping, team roping, steer wrestling, barrel racing, and breakaway roping, the mutton-busting finals and the calf scramble for kids will take place.

At 9 p.m., country band 77 South will perform a free concert on the stage. A beer garden will be available throughout the day.

North Canton Main Street Festival

NORTH CANTON – The annual Main Street Festival will be 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Aug. 13. There will be food and merchandise vendors, music, local performance groups, inflatables, touch-a-truck, and AIW professional wrestling performances starting at noon.

A 1980s party with an E5C4P3-Journey Tribute Band concert will be from 8 to 10 p.m. on the Kempthorn Stage in front of Pav’s Creamery. The 720 Market will set up a barbecue-themed Side Street on North Main Street, and the Main Street Festival will be on South Main Street.
