Native American celebration Saturday
AKRON – The Ohio Celebration of Native and Veteran Heritage, a celebration for Native American culture, will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Springfield Baptist Church Youth Building, 1920 Krumroy Road.
There will be food, an information and culture table, and vendors. Admission is $5; children younger than 6 are free. Parking is free. Dinner is $10. Bring lawn chairs or blankets. No camping. Audience participation is encouraged.
Haven of Rest luncheon
AKRON – The Haven of Rest Women’s Auxiliary luncheon Tuesday will feature local chocolatier Diana Kindler of Diana’s Delectable Chocolates presenting the history of chocolate.
The luncheon begins at noon, and the free program is at 1 p.m. There will be a chocolate door prize. No membership is required, and the public is welcome.
Auxiliary is held the first Tuesday of each month in the main dining room of Haven of Rest, 175 E. Market St. Free parking is available.

Mount Union choirs to perform
ALLIANCE – The University of Mount Union’s Kantorei and Cantus choirs will present a free concert titled "Pathways" at 7:30 tonight at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 427 E. Broadway St. The concert is open to the public.
"Pathways" will include pieces by Joseph Haydn, Ivo Antognini, Craig Hella Johnson, Sarah Quartel, James M. DesJardins, Bob Chilcott and Jacob Narverud. Amy Haines will serve as the collaborative pianist.

LWV meeting on disinformation
CANTON – The Canton Area League of Women Voters and Building Bridges for America will host a forum on fake news, disinformation and outlandish conspiracies from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the Innovation Center of the Stark County District Library, 715 Market Ave. N.
The public program is free.
Caz Margenau, co-director of Leadership Development for the South Bend, Indiana, organization, will lead the morning’s discussion via Zoom. Those who would like to virtually participate may request a Zoom link at www.cantonlwv.org. Otherwise, guests may participate in the discussion in person at the library.

Star Wars party, Mario Day at library
CANAL FULTON – The Canal Fulton Public Library, 154 Market St. E, will host a "May the 'Fourth' Be With You Party" for teens and adults at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Star Wars-themed party will include trivia, crafts, snacks and activities.
Meanwhile, the Children’s Department will host Mario Day at 11 a.m. Saturday. Children who love Mario and his brother Luigi can stop by to make crafts, play games, eat snacks, and enjoy all things Mario. The program is for ages 3-12. Kentucky Derby fundraiser
CANTON – The Eric Snow YMCA will host a Kentucky Derby fundraising party at The Onesto, 225 Second St. NW, from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday. Dress in your best Derby outfit and cheer on your favorite horse with your friends. The event will be on the sixth-floor patio. Tickets are $150 per couple or $100 per person. Mindful Wellness session
DOVER – Christine Kendle, the family and consumer sciences educator for Ohio State University Extension in Tuscarawas County, will offer the last session of a four-part series about mindfulness at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the community room of the Dover Public Library, 525 N. Walnut St.

Forestry Association to meet
DOVER – The East Central Ohio Forestry Association will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the community room of the Dover Public Library, 525 N. Walnut St.
Guest speaker Marne Tichenell, extension program specialist in wildlife for The Ohio State University, will talk about owls. Everyone is welcome.

Dover Public Library hosts game night
DOVER – The Dover Public Library’s Outreach Department will host Game Night: A Look Inside Memory & Sensory Kits at 6:30 pm. Thursday in the community room, 525 N. Walnut St.
The library will introduce participants to its collection of memory and sensory kits and use the Game Night kit to play games and ask trivia questions. This event is supported by the State Library of Ohio with federal funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

'Do the Mu!’ workshop Saturday
MASSILLON – Massillon Museum, 121 Lincoln Way E, will offer a free, family-friendly workshop on creating an abstract painting using recycled stamp art at the "Do the Mu" from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
All are welcome to join the workshop to make abstract art acrylic paintings using found objects. All supplies will be provided. Pre-made stamps created by artist Erika Reynolds will be available for guests to try, and attendees will receive a worksheet listing objects they can find at home to make their own stamps following the workshop.
Navy Concert Band to perform
MASSILLON – The U.S. Navy Concert Band will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Massillon Washington High School, 1 Paul E. Brown Drive SE. All Navy Band performances are free and open to the public.
Chief Musician William Dunn, a native of Canton, will be coming home to Stark County while on tour with the band. He joined the Navy Band in 2006. Prior to his Navy career, Dunn was a member of the U.S. Military Academy Band at West Point. He earned a bachelor's degree in music from The Ohio State University in trumpet performance and a master's in trumpet performance from the Manhattan School of Music.
The U.S. Navy Concert Band is the premier wind ensemble of the U.S. Navy. As the original ensemble of the Navy Band, the Concert Band has been performing public concerts and participating in high-profile events for more than 95 years.
Food gardening series this month
MASSILLON – Massillon Public Library, 208 Lincoln Way E, will host a food gardening series from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday and May 24 in the main library’s auditorium.
The series is presented by the Ohio State University Extension Stark County Master Gardener Volunteer Program. Topics for May are tending the garden and garden maintenance. Registration is required at www.massillonlibrary.org by 11:59 pm. May 8.

Author, illustrator at library; exhibit at museum
NAVARRE – Artist, author and illustrator Michael Gill will visit the Massillon Public Library’s Pam S. Belloni Memorial Branch, 12000 Navarre Road SW, from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Gill, a woodcut and letterpress print maker, will read from his children’s works and explain his process. The program is free and open to the public. All ages are welcome, and no registration is necessary.
His woodcut prints and associated artist books can be viewed in the Michael Gill: The Grownups Keep Talking/Nobody Knows Why exhibition in the Massillon Museum’s Studio M through June 1. A podcast interview with the artist will be posted at MassillonMuseum.org May 17.
The exhibition will present about 20 framed woodcut prints from two artist books: "Common Household Rhymes for the Modern Child" and "A Pocket Full of Change," along with original examples of those books and others, presented on pedestals, with gloves available, so that patrons can read them. The stories and pictures are family-friendly.
Big Read author at museum Thursday
MASSILLON –The finale of the Massillon Museum’s 2022 NEA Big Read will be the keynote by Joy Harjo, U.S. poet laureate and author of "An American Sunrise," a poetry anthology.
The presentation will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in Gessner Hall at the museum, 121 Lincoln Way E.

Wreaths Across America event
PERRY TWP. – Perry Township Rotary will host the Wreaths Across America Educational Trailer from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at Perry High School, 3737 13th St. SW.
The event is free. The trailer is a rolling interactive exhibit that remembers the nation's fallen veterans and honors those who serve. Vietnam veterans will receive special pins.
Astronomy Day at Wilderness Center
SUGAR CREEK TWP. – The Wilderness Center, 9877 Alabama Ave. SW, will host Astronomy Day on Saturday.
The free event will celebrate the successful launch and commissioning of the James Webb Space Telescope. Launched Dec. 18, 2021, and located about 1 million miles from Earth, Webb will be the premier space telescope of the next decade, serving thousands of astronomers worldwide. Webb’s first images are expected by late June or early July.
The event will be in the Interpretive Building at The Wilderness Center and at the observatory from noon to 4:30 p.m. After 4:30 p.m., there will be events at the planetarium and observatory. Activities are designed for all ages, and visitors can attend the entire event or come and go for specific activities.
