Blood drives this week

The American Red Cross has scheduled the following blood donation drives this week in Stark County. All who come to give in August will get a $10 e-gift card to a movie merchant of their choice. Details are available at RedCrossBlood.org/Movie.

  • Jackson Township: Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Paul & Carol David YMCA of Jackson Township, 7389 Caritas Circle NW.

  • Massillon: Monday, noon to 6 p.m., St Paul Lutheran Church, 127 Cherry Road NE.

  • North Canton: Tuesday, 2 to 7 p.m., Church of Christ, 1301 E. Maple St.

Author's visit is Monday

ALLIANCE − Rodman Public Library, 215 E. Broadway St., will host James De Monte at 6:30 p.m. Monday, as part of the Fogle Author Series.

De Monte recently published his second book, “Where Are Your People From? A Novel in Stories.” A graduate of the University of Mount Union, De Monte is an associate professor of English at Lakeland Community College.

Kids crafting at library Thursday

ALLIANCE − Rodman Public Library, 215 E. Broadway St., will hold a kids crafting program at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Stark County Hunger Task Force seeks pantry volunteers

CANTON − Stark County Hunger Task Force will hold a volunteer open house from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Ken Weber Community Campus at Goodwill at 408 Ninth St. SW.

Organization staff and volunteers will lead tours through their food pantry, warehouse, and backpack spaces and provide information to acquire volunteers for various opportunities. Light refreshments will be provided.

Stark County Hunger Task Force volunteers' responsibilities include packing grocery carts, escorting clients to their vehicles with groceries, and stocking the pantry. Volunteers report to the Ken Weber Community Campus at Goodwill.

The pantry's current operating hours are:

  • Monday: 9:15 a.m. to 2:35 p.m.

  • Tuesday and Wednesday: 9:15 a.m. to 3:35 p.m.

  • Thursday: 9:15 a.m. to 2:35 p.m.

  • Friday: 9:15 a.m. to 1:35 p.m.

Brass quintet to perform in Stadium Park

CANTON − A brass quintet from the Canton Symphony Orchestra will perform at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Stadium Park, 1305 Stadium Park Drive NW, as part of Stark Parks Summer Serenades in the Park series. No registration is required. Bring a chair or blanket, picnic food and games.

Family-friendly movie Friday at the Palace

CANTON − The Palace Theatre, 605 Market Ave. N, will present the family-friendly movie "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure" at 7:30 p.m. Friday as part of the Canton First Friday celebration. Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is $2, with tickets sold at the door.

Country dance Sept. 3

CANTON − Canton Country Music will have a dance at the American Legion, 1633 Cleveland Ave. NW, on Sept. 3 with the Jim Davidson Band providing music. The dance is open to the public. Donation is $3 at the door. Doors open at 1:15 p.m. Music is from 2 to 5 p.m. Food is available, as well as a 50/50 drawing and lottery tree. There will be no dance Sept. 10.

Jackson Township man takes leadership position

COLUMBUS − Scott Dilling of Jackson Township has been elected president-elect of the Engineers Foundation of Ohio (EFO) at the organization's 59th annual meeting. He will help guide the educational and service activities for the engineering profession in Ohio.

Dilling is a professor at the University of Akron and the director of the mechanical engineering technology program. He owns Dilling Engineering Services.

Lake Township FISH benefit dinner, silent auction Sept. 12

HARTVILLE − The 16th annual Lake Township FISH benefit dinner and silent auction will be held Sept. 12 at the Hartville Kitchen, 1015 Edison St. NW. Doors open at 5 p.m., dinner is at 6 p.m., and the program is at 7 p.m. ​

The meal includes a full entree with sides, salad, rolls, pie and beverage. The entertainment will be The Cleveland Keys "Dueling Pianos." Stark State College Board of Trustees has new member

JACKSON TWP. − Michael Wheeler has been sworn in as a new member of the Stark State College Board of Trustees. His term runs through Aug. 1, 2026.

He replaces Alice Stephens, who stepped down after nearly a decade of service on the board.

Wheeler is president and chief legal officer of Patriot Software Co. and serves as president of the board of directors. He also has served as general counsel, corporate counsel, and subsidiary president and corporate acquisitions director. A Jackson Township native, he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and legal studies from the University of Mount Union and a law degree from the University of Akron.

Led Zeppelin tribute band to perform Saturday

JACKSON TWP. − Zoso, a Led Zeppelin tribute band, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Nash Family Jackson Amphitheater, 7454 Community Parkway NW. Paddle for Pink event to benefit Aultman Breast Care Center

MALVERN – The fourth annual Paddle for Pink charity event will take place Sept. 5 at Lake Mohawk. Proceeds will support cancer patients at the Aultman Breast Care Center.

Attendees will paddleboard or kayak around the lake while raising money in the fight against breast cancer. The $50 entry fee includes breakfast, lunch, champagne toast and a party-favor bag. Participants are encouraged to invite their friends, family and coworkers to sponsor them to raise additional donations. Prizes are available for the top fundraisers.

Yoga at Massillon Museum on Fridays

MASSILLON – The Massillon Museum’s beginner-friendly yoga class will meet every Friday in September. All ages and levels are welcome to participate in restorative poses, vinyasa, and a five-minute savasana. Bring a mat to the session, which will meet from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. The class will be held on the lawn when the weather permits.

The fee is $6 per class or $15 for a bundle of three classes, which will continue each month. Payment is due at the beginning of the class. No advance registration is necessary.

MINERVA − The Minerva Rotary Club's 100th anniversary dinner celebration will be Sept. 9 at the Great Trail Tee House, 10154 Great Trail Drive. Hors d'oeuvres and social time will be at 5:30 p.m., dinner will be at 6, and 2024-25 Rotary International President Stephanie A. Space available for fall craft show

NORTH CANTON – The North Canton Lions Club will hold a Fall Craft and Artisan Show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 14 at North Canton Hoover High School. The cost is $50 for a 10-by-5-foot space. Reunion for former Hoover employees is Sept. 10

NORTH CANTON – A reunion for Hoover retirees and all former Hoover employees will be 1 to 5 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Hoover banquet hall (dance hall) inside Hoover Park, Walsh University’s North Campus, 1901 E. Maple St.

Designated handicapped parking and shuttle service will be available. Admission is free for retirees, former employees and spouse/guest. Pizza, cookies and beverages (iced tea, lemonade and water) will be provided.

Ham dinner to benefit Wilmot Fire and Rescue

WILMOT – Wilmot Fire and Rescue will have a curbside carryout only ham dinner from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 10. Drive-thru pickup will be in front of the Wilmot Fire Department with volunteers bringing meals to your vehicle.

Dinners are $12 each and include ham, scalloped potatoes, green beans, applesauce, coleslaw and dinner roll. Wilmot Fire Department is at 204 Mill St. Delivery within the village of Wilmot is available; call 330-359-5995. Bring the correct change if possible. All proceeds benefit Wilmot Fire and Rescue, a volunteer department.
