ArtFest is Saturday

ALLIANCE – The annual ArtFest, featuring area artists’ original works on display and for sale, will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday around the Campus Lakes of the University of Mount Union.

Sponsored by the university and the Alliance Area Chamber of Commerce, ArtFest is held in conjunction with the Mount Union vs. Marietta football game, Mount Union's Family Day, and Carnation City Food Truck Rally.

Fathers Walk Your Child to School Day is Thursday

CANTON – Stark County Job and Family Services’ and the Stark County Fatherhood Coalition’s annual Fathers Walk Your Child to School Day will be held Thursday.

This event invites fathers and other significant male caregivers to spend the morning with their child by walking or driving them to school. Representatives from the Stark County Fatherhood Coalition will greet fathers and students at schools in the Canton, Massillon, Plain Local and Alliance school districts. Walk participants will receive free gifts.

This will be the 12th year that the Fatherhood Coalition has hosted the event. Last year’s walk had 2,011 fathers and 2,556 children. The Stark County Fatherhood Coalition’s mission is to improve children’s lives by encouraging and enabling fathers to take an active, positive role in their child’s life. The organization sponsors activities designed to strengthen families and educate the community.

Symphony to perform music of Abba

CANTON – The Canton Symphony Orchestra will present Dancing Queen: The Music of Abba, a Canton Symphony Orchestra Pops Concert featuring Jeans ‘N Classics, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Umstattd Hall, 2331 17th St. NW, at the Zimmermann Symphony Center.

Hooked rug exhibit at McCook House Museum

CARROLLTON – A hooked rug exhibit is on display at the McCook House Museum, 15 S. Lisbon St., until Oct. 8.

Artwork by Marlene Troyer of Sugarcreek is featured. Museum hours are Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for children. For information, call 330-437-9715.

Stroke awareness, trivia nights, poetry, teen events at library

DOVER − Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital Community Health and Wellness will present the program “BE FAST for Stroke” at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Dover Public Library, 525 N. Walnut St.

The program will teach about risk factors, prevention, how to recognize the signs of stroke and what to do. Register at www.doverlibrary.org or call the library at 330-343-6123.

Meanwhile, the library's monthly trivia nights resume at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Teams of two to six players are invited to compete. Everyone is welcome. A group for people interested in writing poetry will meet on the second Wednesday of each month to support and encourage fellow poets. MAPS dinner dance is Sept. 18

GREEN – The Military Aviation Preservation Society will hold its third dinner dance of the year Sept. 18 at the MAPS Air Museum, 2260 International Parkway.

Two options are available for attending: Option One is for those who want a sit-down dinner with music and dancing afterward. Option Two is for those who want to attend the dance only.

Reservations are required for Option One. Cost is $21.72 per person. Dinner is beef tips on noodles, a vegetable, dinner salad, roll and bottled water. Doors open for dinner at 4:30 p.m. Registration deadline for this option is 1 p.m. Saturday. No reservations are needed for Option Two. To attend only the dance, arrive at 5:30 pm. Admission is $10.

The band LaFlavour will provide music, and the event will end at 9 p.m. No outside food, drink, or alcohol are allowed, but the MAPS snack bar will be open during the event.

Veterans' Resource Fair is Friday, Saturday

GREEN – The Serving Area Military Center (SAM Center) will present a Veterans' Resource Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the MAPS Air Museum, 2260 International Parkway.

'Sing 2' at amphitheater Saturday

JACKSON TWP. – The Jackson Township Amphitheater, 7454 Community Parkway NW, will show the free Disney movie “Sing 2” at 7 p.m. Saturday. Doors open at 6 p.m. Outside food is welcome at this event, but food vendors also will be on site.

Massillon Woman’s Club to meet

Streamside maintenance program offered

MASSILLON – Stark Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) will host a streamside maintenance program at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the USDA Service Center Conference Room, 2650 Richville Drive SE.

Minerva library plans events

MINERVA – The Minerva Public Library, 677 Lynnwood Drive, has resumed story times for children ages 3-5 at 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays.

Book Beginnings, also at 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays, engages children up to age 3 and their caregivers with stories songs, and action rhymes.

Richard Haldi will speak on "Ohio-Erie Canal, Ohio’s First Superhighway" at 6:30 p.m. Monday. At 7 p.m. Sept. 19, Trevor Householder from Stark Parks will talk about the history and current attractions at Molly Stark Park.

The fall book sale will be Sept. 24-Oct. 1. Books, DVDs, audiobooks, and music CDs will be sold to fund new library materials.

NORTH CANTON – Volunteers are needed for the Nimishillen Creek cleanup at Price Park from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Learn about birding

SUGAR CREEK TWP. – The Wilderness Center, 9877 Alabama Ave. SW, will offer a three-part Beginning Birding course that will meet 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 17, Oct. 15 and Nov. 12.

Led by local birding expert and Richland County Park District Executive Director Jason Larson, each session features in-depth content paired with Wilderness Center trails.

The first class will focus on the history of bird watching and will touch on the basics of optics, field guides and essential gear. An optional short trip to a local optics shop will follow the workshop. The second class will focus on basic bird identification. The third class will focus on utilizing the latest technology, social media, apps and citizen science. Participants also will learn how and where to get out into the field to practice their new skills.

Participants should dress for the weather and for outdoor hiking and bring binoculars, a smartphone (for birding apps) and lunch. The Wilderness Center has a limited number of binoculars to lend.

Although the content of the course progresses, participants may register for one, two or all sessions. Registration is required. The price is $30 per person or $75 for families (up to four participants) for all three sessions. Individual sessions are $12 per person.
