Mount Union showcase artwork

ALLIANCE – The University of Mount Union is hosting works by members of the Mount Union campus in both the Beeghly Hall and Sally Otto galleries. Both exhibits include photographs, paintings, drawings and assemblages. The exhibits, which are free and open to the public, run through Aug. 12 in both locations.

The exhibit in Beeghly Hall features the works of Shehla Arif, associate professor, mechanical engineering; Theresa Davis, associate professor, history; Heather Duda, founding dean of the College of Arts and Humanities; Robert Ekey, professor, physics; Rachelle Gerback, housekeeper; Scott Gravlee, associate professor, philosophy and religious studies; and Ryan Riggs, head wrestling coach

The Sally Otto Gallery features Riggs’ “Small Worlds” series.

Brewster Electric Utility honored    

BREWSTER – Brewster Electric Utility has received the 2021 Excellence in Reliability Certification, American Municipal Power Inc. said.

The recognition was presented by the American Public Power Association during the association’s annual Engineering & Operations Technical Conference, which took place March 28-30 in Austin, Texas.  

The association helps public power systems track outage and restoration data through the eReliability Tracker service and then compares that data to national statistics from the U.S. Energy Information Administration for all types of electric utilities.

Canton Garden Center officers elected

CANTON – Carol Davidson has been named president of the Canton Garden Center. Others elected were Anette Montgomery, first vice president; Lenora Krueger, second vice president; Darla Rueschman, recording secretary; Brenda Rapp, corresponding secretary; Linda Lawrence, treasurer; and Linda Heinzer, financial secretary.      

Cook’s Lagoon Fishing Derby

ABCD annual meeting June 23

CANTON – ABCD Inc. will have its annual meeting and dinner at 5:30 p.m. June 23 at the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel, 320 Market Ave. S. Attendees are encouraged to wear something colorful to celebrate summer.

McKinley alums sought for reunion

CANTON – The Canton McKinley Class of 1973 is planning its 50th anniversary class reunion in 2023.

Community festival this weekend

EAST CANTON – The East Canton Community Festival will be 4 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday on Browning Street behind the Foltz Community Center.

The Cody Marshall Band will perform Friday, and New Wave Nation will perform Saturday. Also featured are inflatables, a mechanical bull, car cruise-in, chicken and rib barbecue, and a beer garden. The event is sponsored by East Canton Rotary.

Military Mapping Maidens exhibit

GREEN – MAPS Air Museum, 2260 International Parkway, is hosting the traveling exhibit Military Mapping Maidens, which is on display through Aug. 5.

It features the story of 224 young women who were recruited by the Army Map Service in 1943 to research and draw maps by hand for the Allied war effort in World War II. The exhibit is narrated by Bea Shaheen McPherson.

Today, the Army Map Service is called the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, and is based in Springfield, Virginia.

Oak Ridge Boys to perform

HARTVILLE – The Oak Ridge Boys will perform a dinner concert at the Hartville Kitchen, 1015 Edison St. NW, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday; and 1 to 2:30 p.m. and 7 to 8 p.m. Friday. Doors open for the evening event at 5:30, with the meal served at 6. Doors open for the Friday matinee at 11:30 a.m., with the meal served at noon.

Concerts at Jackson Amphitheater

JACKSON TWP. – Into the Blue, an ELO tribute band, will perform from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Jackson Amphitheater, 7454 Community Parkway NW.

With a lineup of 11 professional musicians and a string section from the Tuscarawas Philharmonic, Into the Blue will perform all of ELO’s hits. Tickets on sale at www.jacksonamphitheater.com.

Ravenwood featuring Joe Vitale Jr. also will perform a free concert from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the amphitheater.

Museum honors military personnel

MASSILLON – The Massillon Museum, 121 Lincoln Way E, is part of Blue Star Museums, a program offering free admission and/or discounts to active-duty military personnel and their families.

The national program runs from Armed Forces Day, May 21, through Labor Day, Sept. 5, but Massillon Museum extends discounts throughout the year on classes, workshops, special events, and shop purchases. Admission to the Massillon Museum is always free.

Exhibition reception Saturday

MASSILLON – A reception for the Massillon Museum exhibit "Missing History of Massillon: Unheard African American Stories" will be 5:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday in the Aultman Health Foundation Gallery at the Massillon Museum, 121 Lincoln Way E.

The exhibit, which continues through Nov. 9, features stories, images and artifacts representing Massillon’s Black community.

Coffee with a Cop

MASSILLON – The next Coffee with a Cop program will be held at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at Tremont Coffee, 215 Erie St N.

The Coffee with a Cop program is designed to provide an opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn more about how the Stark County Sheriff’s Office serves the community.

The community is invited to ask questions, bring concerns, or simply get to know the members of the Stark County Sheriff’s Office better. The Coffee with a Cop program is a national initiative.

North Canton Alumni Association announces inductees

NORTH CANTON – The North Canton Alumni Association has announced its inductees into the Hall of Distinction for 2022. They are:

  • Martha (Strauch) Bell, class of 1985 – a proponent of the arts in Mount Vernon and Knox County Ohio.

  • Logan Family Foundation – a local charitable foundation that "pays it forward" to the Ashland, Columbus, Upper Arlington, and North Canton areas. 

  • Dr. Bina Mehta, class of 1987 – well-known in the field of pain management in Northeast Ohio.

  • Kyle Putinski, class of 2003 – active in the nonprofit sector, executive director of the local Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization.

  • Handy Wolf, No-Ca-Hi class of 1942 – a leader in public education for the Plain Local school district; WWII vet with Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

The Alumni Association will have an in-person induction ceremony at 7 p.m. Sept. 28 at Hoover High School. Light refreshments will be served after the ceremony, which will be open to all. There will be no charge for attending, but donations will be accepted.
