Mount Union schedules concerts

ALLIANCE – The University of Mount Union will present the following concerts in Brush Performance Hall in the school's Giese Center for the Performing Arts, 67 W. Simpson St.:

The Spring Jazz Ensemble Concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Admission is free.

The Steel Band will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Admission is free.

The Alliance Symphony Orchestra's spring concert will be at 3 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for seniors and veterans. Student and child tickets are free but must be ordered from the box office in person, by phone at 330-821-2565 or online at mountunion.edu/boxoffice.

Lecture will feature mental health advocates Zee, Harris

ALLIANCE – The University of Mount Union’s 2023 Schooler Lecture at 8 p.m. April 27 in the university’s Timken Gymnasium will feature mental health advocates Ginger Zee and Dan Harris.

Zee, the chief meteorologist at ABC News and the managing editor of ABC’s Climate Unit, covers the nation’s weather headlines on “Good Morning America” and across all ABC News broadcasts and digital platforms. She has helped lessen the stigma surrounding depression and mental health issues through her books “Natural Disaster: I Cover Them. I Am One.” and “A Little Closer to Home: How I Found the Calm After the Storm.”

Harris is a former co-anchor for the weekend edition of Good Morning America on ABC News, as well as a former correspondent for such broadcasts as Nightline and World News Tonight. He has earned Murrow and Emmy awards for his reporting.

Harris wrote the New York Times bestselling book “10% Happier,” about a fidgety, skeptical news anchor who stumbles upon meditation. Harris’s most recent book, “Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics,” is also on the bestselling list.

The lecture will be moderated by Mount Union Associate Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience Kevin Meyer, who has used Harris’ works in his classes. Meyer is also a marriage and family therapist.

Book sale at library Saturday

ALLIANCE − The Friends of Rodman Public Library will hold its annual members meeting at 10:30 a.m. and conduct a mini used book sale Saturday at the Main Library, 215 E. Broadway St.

During the meeting in the auditorium, members will vote on officers and three proposed revisions to the group’s by-laws. A basket will be raffled off during the approximately half-hour meeting.

After the meeting, the book sale will take place in the children’s programming room. The sale, open to the public, will run all day. The cost will be by donation. For more information, call 330-821-2665.

Library schedules programs

CANAL FULTON – The Canal Fulton Public Library, 154 E. Market St., will offer the following programs this week:

Tuesday, 6 p.m.: The Third Tuesday Book Discussion will discuss “The Leavers” by Lisa Ko.

Thursday, 6 to 7 p.m.: DIY Bird feeders. Children in kindergarten to fifth grade will decorate their own bird feeders. Registration is required; call 330-854-4148.

Friday, 5 to 6 p.m.: Diverse Designs: Multicultural Art. Attendees at this monthly event discuss an artist from a diverse background and create artwork inspired by the artist’s style. This month’s artist is Pablo Picasso. This event is for all ages but recommended for ages 3 and up. Registration is required; call 330-854-4148.

Saturday, 11 a.m.: Cartoons and Crafts (for adults and teens): Enjoy a Saturday morning of cartoons, cereal and a simple craft. Registration is required. To register, stop by the information desk or call the library at 330-854-4148, then select option 3.

After-abortion support group to meet

CANTON – Hope and Healing’s Women of Worth after-abortion support group will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. The group meets on the third Wednesday of each month. Call or text 330-834-8224 for details and location information.

Women of Worth is a monthly support meeting for women with a shared abortion experience. This is a safe, confidential, non-judgmental and non-political place, the group says.

NFIB Ohio Leadership Council elects Canton businessman

CANTON – The National Federation of Independent Business recently announced that Merle Griff of Sarah Adult Day Services Inc. in Canton was among the members of the statewide Leadership Council elected to two-year terms.

The Leadership Council is composed of 38 independent business owners from across Ohio who meet quarterly to guide the organization’s statewide activities. The volunteer panel offers input to the organization’s advocacy program while assisting in efforts to bring small-business issues to the attention of state and federal elected officials.

Pregnancy and Parenting Center to host open house

JACKSON TWP. – The Pregnancy & Parenting Center, 4500 22nd St. NW, will host a grand reopening open house from 4 to 6 p.m. April 27. Representatives from agencies and/or ministries serving young families are invited.

Civil War Roundtable to meet Thursday

LAKE TWP. −The Stark County Civil War Roundtable will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church, 3088 State St. NW. Valerie Francesangeli will present “Madame Lily Sinclair, proprietress of the Chateau De Repose, a Civil War bordello.” She will discuss why brothels were started, why women worked in brothels and other issues women faced in the mid 1800s.

Louisville City Schools receives grant for mindfulness path

LOUISVILLE – Louisville City Schools recently was among 17 organizations in Ohio to receive a grant from the Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation. The competitive grants support projects that educate about environmental stewardship, protect and preserve habitat, and enhance or make nature more accessible.

Louisville City Schools received $5,000 to develop and build a mindfulness path along the walking trail behind Louisville Middle School for use by students and the community. The trail will include seven stations to engage in mindfulness activities during a nature walk.

In addition, the Ohio & Erie Canal Coalition will use its $10,000 grant to cover expenses like equipment, trash removal and project coordination associated with the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail Cleanup and Enhancement project.

Minerva library plans program on pioneer and woodsman

MINERVA − Historical re-enactor Kenneth Hammontree will present a free program on Simon Kenton at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the community room of the Minerva Public Library, 677 Lynnwood Drive. Kenton gained fame as an army scout, woodsman, and Indian fighter throughout the Ohio Valley in the later 18th and early 19th centuries.

The program, for all ages, and is offered to accompany the Ohio Pioneers traveling exhibit on view at the library through May 6. The free exhibit explores the settlement and growth of Ohio from the first pioneers through the end of the 19th century. It was developed by Marietta College Library and is based on the best-selling book "Pioneers" by David McCullough.

Timken High School Class of 1983 plans reunion

PERRY TWP. – Timken Senior High School Class of 1983 will hold its 40-year reunion at 6 p.m. July 8. There will be an open bar, dinner and dancing at McKinley Aerie No. 2370 F.O.E., 5024 Monticello Ave. NW.

Storm Water and Severe Weather program is April 24

PERRY TWP. – Stark Soil & Water Conservation District will host a storm water and severe weather program from 6 to 7:30 p.m. April 24 at the Stark Library Perry Sippo Branch, 5710 12th St. NW.

Learn the steps you can take to manage storm water and extreme weather on your property and in your community. Topics covered include weather patterns, extreme weather events, and storm water management such as rain barrels and rain gardens.

Canton Central Catholic High School plans benefit auction

PERRY TWP. – Canton Central Catholic High School’s annual benefit auction will be April 22 in the school’s gymnasium, 4824 Tuscarawas St. W.

Attendees are invited to enjoy small plates, drinks and desserts created by members of the Crusader community and local businesses. Guests will be entertained by Canton Central Catholic High School celebrity bartenders.

Coffee with a Cop event is Thursday

TUSCARAWAS TWP. – The Stark County Sheriff’s Office will hold a Coffee with a Cop event at 8 a.m. Thursday at BellStores, 13168 Lincoln Way W. The Coffee with a Cop program invites community members to ask questions, bring concerns, get to know the members of the Sheriff’s Office better and to learn more about how the agency serves the community.
