Free legal help at library

ALLIANCE – The Ohio Justice Bus, a mobile legal aid office and technology hotspot, will visit the Rodman Public Library, 215 E. Broadway St., from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday.

The bus will be parked in the Main Library parking lot to offer free brief advice clinics to Alliance-area residents. People will have the opportunity to talk privately to an attorney about family law issues related to adoption and kinship care. Services will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Patrons wishing to receive advice should bring any relevant documents.

Juneteenth program at library

ALLIANCE – Rodman Public Library, 215 E. Broadway St., will mark Juneteenth with a special presentation by William "Ted" McDaniel, a professor of African-American studies and professor of music at Ohio State University. He will speak on the topic of "Understanding Black History Through Black Music" in Rodman Auditorium at 7 p.m. June 20. Registration is required; visit rodmanlibrary.evanced.info/signup, or call 300-821-2665, ext. 107.

A specialist in African-American music and jazz performance, McDaniel is noted for his analysis of the music of John Coltrane and Charlie Parker. He has published several works on Black music and more than 300 musical arrangements. 

Concert on Friday in Canal Fulton

CANAL FULTON – Out of Eden will play a free Eagles tribute concert from 8 to 10 p.m. Friday at St. Helena Heritage Park, 123 Tuscarawas St. NW, as part of the city’s Summer Concert Series.

The Yankee Bravo Trio will play from 6 to 7 p.m. Admission is free. Food and beverages will be available. Free on-street parking is available outside the park. Parking in the Heritage Park lot will be $10.

Juneteenth Community Festival

CANTON – A Juneteenth Community Festival will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. June 19 at Nimisilla Park, 12th Street and O’Jays Parkway.

TIPS server training June 24

CANTON – The Stark County Sheriff’s Office, Stark County Safe Communities, Esber Beverage, and Drug Free Stark County are collaborating to offer free TIPS server training to local businesses from 9 a.m. to noon June 24 at the Stark County Sheriff’s Office, 4500 Atlantic Blvd. NE.

The training is for businesses and personnel that sell or serve alcohol. The training may help protect you from DUI/OVI liability, help lower insurance premiums, and help prevent liquor sales to minors. TIPS trains servers, sellers, and consumers of alcohol how to prevent intoxication, drunken driving, and underage drinking.

Refreshments will be provided. Participants must be present for the full three-hour session. Space is limited, and reservations are required. Contact Sondra Troyer at 330-430-3835 or by e-mail at 207@starksheriff.org to register. Provide the names of all employees who will attend.

Free tickets to Fatherhood Festival

CANTON – The Stark County Fatherhood Coalition is distributing free tickets to the Hall of Fame Village's Fatherhood Festival, which will be held Friday and Saturday.

Tickets are available to Stark County fathers and male role models. Up to three children are permitted per adult. The festival will feature interactive games, awards, and a screening of the movie "American Underdog, The Kurt Warner Story."

Baseball Hall of Famer to speak at library 

DOVER – Lois Youngen, who played in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in the early 1950s and went on to have a successful career at the University of Oregon, will speak in the Dover Public Library Community Room, 525 N. Walnut St., at 6:30 p.m. June 20.

She is being inducted into the Tuscarawas County Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday.    

Youngen was born near Ragersville, Ohio. She played baseball with her father, who had pitched for Kent State University in the 1920s. She was recruited at 17 to play for the Fort Wayne Daisies. She played with several teams in the league until 1954. In 1988, Youngen and the other women of the League became part of the permanent display at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.   

She earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education from Michigan State University. In 1960, she was hired to coach the University of Oregon’s track and field program. She received her doctorate degree from The Ohio State University in 1971. In her 36-year tenure at the University of Oregon, she coached 26 sports and was a professor and administrator.

Farmers market at church

JACKSON TWP. – A farmers market will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursdays starting this week through Sept. 29 at St. Stephen Martyr Lutheran Church, 4600 Fulton Drive NW.

Products to be offered include honey, maple syrup, baked goods, mushrooms, cookies, garden art, hot sauce, meat, spiced nuts, microgreens and plants, goat’s milk soap, and eggs. Food trucks will be available on select dates.

The church will hold a summer outdoor worship service each Thursday following the market at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to stay and participate.

Events at Jackson Amphitheater

JACKSON TWP. – Unhinged will perform a free concert from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Jackson Amphitheater, 7454 Community Parkway NW.

Trippin’ Billies – A Tribute to the Dave Matthews Band will perform from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are on sale at www.jacksonamphitheater.com.

Outback Ray and his Amazing Animals will visit the amphitheater for free live shows from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Friday, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. July 22 and 3 to 4 p.m. Aug. 1.

Book sale this week

LAKE TWP. – Friends of the Lake Community Library’s annual book sale is Wednesday through Saturday in the Lake High School cafeteria, 565 Market Ave. SW.

Gently-read books, DVDs, jigsaw puzzles and games will be available. Cash or check only. Proceeds will assist Lake Community Library programs.

Sale hours are 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday; 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Music at Quail Hollow Park

LAKE TWP. – Traditional Music Nights at Quail Hollow Park, 13480 Congress Lake Ave. NE, are held monthly on the first and third Thursdays (June through September) inside the Manor House.

Traditional, bluegrass and Celtic music are played at each session. Bring an instrument and join in or sit back and enjoy the music. No reservations are required. Admission is $2. Beverages and snacks are available for sale by the Quail Hollow Volunteer Association.

Civil War Roundtable meets Thursday

LAKE TWP. – The Stark County Civil War Roundtable will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church, 3088 State St. NW.

The presentation will be "Polly's Diary," a young girl’s thoughts, hopes, dreams, fears and general daily life in North Benton, Ohio, during 1863. Maryanne Chevroux will portray Polly Stratton as she writes certain content selected from the diary while Paul Hobe narrates the information linking Polly’s comments to other Civil War events during 1863.

There will be a potluck dinner at the meeting. Covered dishes and desserts are welcomed but not necessary. The nonmember meeting fee is $4.

Arts in the Garden is Saturday

MASSILLON – The Massillon Woman’s Club, 210 Fourth St. NE, will host Arts in the Garden from 10 am to 6 pm. Saturday.

Artisans, food and music will be featured on the grounds surrounding Five Oaks Mansion – along Fifth Street NE and North Avenue. Tours of the home will be available, and the second-floor gift shop will be open.

Natural Lawns Workshop is Thursday

MASSILLON – The Stark Soil & Water Conservation District will host a free virtual Natural Lawns Workshop at 1 p.m. Thursday via Zoom.

The focus will be on how to get a healthy, lower-maintenance lawn while protecting the environment.

Museum hosts ‘Accessible Expressions Ohio’ exhibit  

MASSILLON – The free traveling exhibit "Accessible Expressions Ohio" will be in the Massillon Museum’s Fred F. Silk Community Room Gallery, 121 Lincoln Way E, through July 20. A free public reception will be from 5 to 7 p.m. June 25.  

"Accessible Expressions Ohio" is a juried, statewide exhibition and tour of visual art created by artists with disabilities. If the artwork is sold, artists receive the full value they have set on their artwork.

The diverse exhibit travels to accessible sites throughout Ohio from April through December to raise awareness and change viewers’ perspectives of disabilities while inspiring their own creativity and acts of inclusion.

Book sale at Minerva library

MINERVA – The Minerva Public Library, 677 Lynnwood Dr., will have a book sale Wednesday through Saturday during library hours. DVDs, music CDs, VHS tapes, and audiobooks will also be for sale. Saturday is the $1 a bag sale – fill a grocery bag will all the books it will hold for just $1.

Animal stories for kids Wednesday

NAVARRE – The Barry Askren Memorial Branch Library, 1200 Market St. NE, will host Animal Tales from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday.

Sara the Storyteller will share about friendship, respect for others, and bravery from the animal heroes in multicultural stories from Africa, China and the British isles. Jaycee Fair this week

NORTH CANTON – The North Canton Jaycee Fair will be from 6 to 11 p.m. Monday through Saturday at Dogwood Park, 345 Seventh St. NE.

All proceeds help fund the North Canton Jaycees' service projects throughout the year, which include Special Olympics, Safety Town, and the Fourth of July parade and fireworks.

Parking and entry are free. Food will be available for purchase. Ride tickets are $1 each or 12 tickets for $10. Kid rides take three tickets, and major rides take four tickets. Unlimited-ride wristbands are $20 each day from open to close.
