Alliance Symphony Orchestra concert next Sunday

ALLIANCE – The Alliance Symphony Orchestra will present its fall concert at 3 p.m. Oct. 22 in the Brush Performance Hall of the Giese Center for the Performing Arts, 67 W. Simpson St.

The concert, titled “Le Tour de France," will include works by French composers Jean-Joseph Mouret, Gabriel Fauré and Paul Dukas, as well as George Gershwin’s famous “An American in Paris.”

Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors/veterans and free for all students. Student and child tickets must be ordered by phone or in person prior to the day of the show. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tickets are available at mountunion.edu/boxoffice or through the Mount Union box office at 330-821-2565. Box office hours are from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday when classes are in session. The box office will also open for ticket sales one hour before the performance.

StarkFresh Celebrity Chef Showdown is Thursday

ALLIANCE – StarkFresh will hold a Celebrity Chef Showdown at 6 p.m. Thursday inside the Alliance Commons, 405 S. Linden Ave.

James Moore, executive chef and owner at Blue Smoke; Demond Germany, owner of Scratch Steakhouse & Lounge; and Michael Jarzenski, executive chef of Feel Good BBG & Melange, will compete against each other in a live culinary cook-off fundraiser.

The event will raise funds for an EBT match program at the StarkFresh grocery stores in Canton and Alliance. The match allows EBT/SNAP card users to receive a discount on shopping orders of up to $10 per visit. StarkFresh’s first store opened in 2020 in downtown Canton, and the second location opened Oct. 9 in Alliance.

Tickets are $125 per person or $200 per couple, and all tickets include heavy hors d’oeuvres and two free drink tickets at the cash bar. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.starkfresh.org

Swiss steak dinner Saturday

BEACH CITY – Beach City American Legion Hall Post 549, 125 Third Ave. NE, will have a drive-thru carryout Swiss steak dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. (or until the food runs out) Saturday. Watch for signs for where to enter. The meal includes three-bean salad, applesauce, mashed potatoes with homemade gravy, corn, bread and dessert for $12.

After-abortion support group to meet Wednesday

CANTON − Hope and Healing’s Women of Worth after-abortion support group will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. The group meets on the third Wednesday of each month. Call or text 330-834-8224 for details and location.

New exhibit at McKinley Museum opens Thursday

CANTON – The free opening of the McKinley Presidential Library & Museum’s Keller Gallery exhibit will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. The exhibition explores the stories and science of habitats, and the plants, animals and humans that call them home. McKinley Presidential Library & Museum is at 800 McKinley Monument Drive NW. Fashion show to raise funds for hospice

CANTON – The Women’s Board of Aultman Hospital will present the 2023 Angels on the Runway – Fashion Icons event Oct. 26 at the Cultural Center for the Arts in downtown Canton.

Proceeds will benefit Aultman Hospice and Grief Services and the Women’s Board Compassionate Care Center.

The event will showcase the latest trends from local boutiques and fashion designers, and attendees will be treated to a special exhibition presented by the National First Ladies Library. For more information and tickets, visit aultman.org/fashionshow.

Stark County Heart Walk raises more than $120K

CANTON − More than 600 walkers participated in the American Heart Association Stark County Heart Walk at the Hall of Fame Village on Sept. 30. This year’s event raised over $120,000 for local programs in Stark County, including blood pressure control and CPR training.

Funds also benefit research, advocacy and public health education efforts. Stark Heart Walk is among 300 Heart Walks held nationwide to raise money to cure heart disease and strokes.

Ribbon cutting, open house at counseling center

Harlem Wizards to face Canton Local staff in basketball game

CANTON − The Harlem Wizards will play the Canton South High School staff at 7 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Canton South High School Red Ash Gymnasium.

Hamfest is Oct. 29 at MAPS

GREEN − The Massillon Amateur Radio Club will have its annual Hamfest beginning at 8 a.m. Oct. 29 at the Military Aviation Preservation Society Museum, 2260 International Pkwy.

There will be $5,000 in door prizes this year. There will be a VE testing session for those looking to become a ham operator or upgrade their license. Coffee and food will be available.

Rotary District 6650 selling specialty doughnuts for polio eradication

CANTON — On Oct. 24, World Polio Day, the members of Rotary District 6650 around the Northeast Ohio region are joining with other Rotary Clubs around the nation to host a joint fundraiser.

The 46 clubs and their high school and college affiliates are selling scratch-made long john/cream stick doughnuts, topped with a dab of purple icing. This represents the purple paint that is placed on children’s pinkie fingers in developing countries after they receive the polio vaccine.

For every $20 dozen sold, a $9 donation will be made to Rotary International’s POLIO PLUS initiative. The donation is then eligible for the 2:1 match funded by The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and any other district or Rotary International matching funds available.

Haunted hayride at Jackson South Park

JACKSON TWP. − Jackson Township Parks & Recreation Department will offer haunted hayrides from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday at Jackson South Park, 4811 South Park Drive NW. The event is free, and concessions will be available. This is a scary event that might not be appropriate for younger attendees.

Jackson Historical Society plans program

JACKSON TWP. − The Jackson Township Historical Society will have its annual membership meeting at 6 p.m. Oct. 24 at 7756 Fulton Drive. Members are invited to hear reports of the committees. Elections will be held, followed by refreshments and social time.

The Historical Society will host a history of the township fire department at 6 p.m. Oct. 26. Fire Chief Capt. Tim Berczik will be the presenter. A special collection of Fire Department memorabilia and documents will be displayed. Admission is $5 (ages 14 and up), and members are free.

Civil War program is Tuesday at Spring Hill

MASSILLON − Spring Hill Historic Home's fall speaker series, Let's Talk History, continues from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Spring Hill, 1401 Springhill Lane NE, as Walsh University history professor Kelly Mezurek presents the program "Black Men in Blue: The Civil War, Ohioans, and the United States Colored Troops."

Learn about superstitions

NORTH CANTON − Learn the origin of some common superstitions Saturday as Lynette Reiner, science director at the McKinley Presidential Library & Museum, presents a program at the Community Christian Church, 210 N. Main St.

The program is part of the monthly meeting of the College Club of Canton, but it is free and open to the public. The meeting begins at 10:15 a.m., and the program starts at 10:30. The nonprofit College Club provides scholarships and grants, and promotes higher education among students and Stark County residents.

Fall Fest is Saturday

PERRY TWP. − Fall Fest, a free, non-scary family event, will be at two entrances of Sippo Lake Park from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday.

Activities will include crafts, games, pumpkin party with live animal ambassadors, FeLeap the Frog, fall photo booth, Stark Library activity, and the Treat Trail and a Trail Tale story walk located halfway between event entrances. There will be live music with Rock Salt and Nails at the Exploration Gateway and Doug Koffman at the amphitheater in front of the Wildlife Conservation Center.

Concessions will be available for purchase. Portions of the event require traveling on a limestone trail between stations. No registration is required. Costumes are encouraged, and children should bring treat bags. Park at the 12th Street entrance at 5712 12th St. NW and Genoa Avenue entrance at 800 Genoa Ave.
