McCook House opens this weekend
CARROLLTON – The 2022 season for the McCook House,15 S. Lisbon St., begins this Friday and Saturday.
The hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tours are $3 for adults, and $2 for children. Book festival this weekend
DOVER – The Canal Town Book Festival will be Friday and Saturday.
The opening night ceremony will be at 6 p.m. Friday at the Dover Public Library. Guitarist Bill Hall will perform, followed by an interview with author Julie Anne Lindsey.
An author fair will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturda, part of the Canal Days Festival, at the corner of Wooster Avenue and Third Street. Attendees can meet local authors, discover new books and win prizes.
New Philadelphia author to speak
DOVER – Author Dominic Gangale of New Philadelphia will speak at the Dover Public Library Community Room, 525 N. Walnut St., at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
A book signing will follow the program. Gangale will share how writing helped him through a time of grief and how that very personal writing experience helped him rediscover his passion for writing. Register online at www.doverlibrary.org or call the library at 330-343-6123.
When three of his five children were in college, Gangale took writing classes. He began writing a novel, but his efforts were cut short when his wife died in 2019. He put the novel away and poured his emotions into a book he titled "The Greater the Love, The Deeper the Grieving." After a time, Gangale’s children and grandchildren encouraged him to continue writing. He pulled out the manuscript he had been working on. This past year, he published "Love Me Silently."
Youth theater classes
GREEN – Theatre 8:15, 4740 Massillon Road, is offering youth summer theatrical classes with instructor Jim Volkert.

Learn about septic systems
JACKSON TWP. – The Stark County Health Department will host a virtual event in partnership with Stark Soil and Water at 6 p.m. Wednesday on Zoom.
The presentation "So You Moved to the Country: Do Your Part, Be Septic Smart!” will explore how a septic system works, why it is an essential component of a home, the environmental impacts of a failing system, and what maintenance is required to ensure it lasts a long time.

Free concert Thursday
JACKSON TWP. – A free concert with the Eric Brooke Band will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Jackson Township North Park Amphitheater, 7454 Community Parkway NW.
Gates open at 5 p.m. Food trucks will visit, and adult beverages will be available.
Photo exhibit fundraiser at museum
MASSILLON – The Clicking for a Cause photo exhibition will be on view in the Massillon Museum’s lower level lobby through June 15. The Massillon Museum is at 121 Lincoln Way E.
The exhibit is intended to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Photographers have donated their matted 8-by-10-inch images for the exhibit. Each image will be offered for sale at $25; that entire amount is directed to the American Cancer Society when a photograph is purchased.
An artist and former Relay for Life volunteer, Jan Jordan has spearheaded the initiative for more than a decade and donates her own photographs for sale.
CPR class, safe driving class
MASSILLON – Two free classes are being offered soon at the Stark County Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Training Center, 143 First St. SE. Enrollment for both classes is on a first-come, first-served basis, and limited to 30 people for either class.
The Massillon Fire Department will instruct the American Heart Association’s Friends and Family CPR class from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday. The course teaches the lifesaving skills of adult hands-only CPR, adult CPR with breaths, child CPR, adult and child AED use, infant CPR, and choking relief for adults, children and infants.
The Stark County Sheriff’s Office will offer a free safe driving course for mature drivers May 31. Julie Dominik, certified driver rehabilitation specialist and licensed driving instructor with Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital’s Driver Rehabilitation Program, will teach about a variety of safe driving practices and resources. Attendees will be introduced to Stark County Safe Communities and the current Strategic Highway Safety Plan. The instructor will discuss age-related changes that can impair driving skills in addition to best practices to help them stay fit to drive.

Military dog tags, fallen heroes
MASSILLON – At the Massillon Museum’s Brown Bag Lunch program Tuesday, retired Maj. George Lemon will talk about the history of military dog tags and fallen military heroes. His program will begin at 12:10 p.m. and end at 12:50.
Lemon served in the U.S. Army and National Guard. He was a commissioned senior helicopter pilot with more than 3,600 hours of flight time. He commanded the 416th Engineer Aviation Unit and was the 107th Armored Calvary regimental intelligence officer.
Admission is free, and no reservations are required. The museum, 121 Lincoln Way E, provides free cookies and coffee for attendees. Guests can purchase sandwiches, salad, and smoothies at Greatness Cafe in the museum lobby or bring their own lunches.

Networking and vendor show
MASSILLON – The Minding Your Business networking and vendor show will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday at 48 Second St. SE. Minding Your Business is a small-business advertisement company.
The event is intended to highlight small businesses and give them an opportunity to showcase their products and services. There will be food trucks and music and many small and minority businesses, as well as third-party independent consultants. The event is free to the community.

Free meals for kids in Perry
PERRY TWP. – Perry Local Schools will participate in the Summer Food Service Program.
Meals will be provided at the Perry High School cafeteria, 3737 13th St. SW, from May 31 through Aug. 5. Breakfast will be from 7:30 to 10 a.m., and lunch will be from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Meals will be free for all children.
Photo club contest, artists’ market
SUGAR CREEK TWP. – The Wilderness Center will combine the Nature Fest Artists’ Market with the TWC Nature Photo Club's Foto Fest for a weekend celebrating art inspired by nature.
The events will be June 4 and June 5 at The Wilderness Center.
A variety of artists will sell their work at the Nature Fest Artists’ Market. There will be activities for children and adults, including make-and-take items for kids and book discussions with local authors for adults. Musicians expected at the event include the Low Gap Band, Gaetano’s Jazz Trio, Annie Yoder, and Ed Marthey Jazz Piano.

The Foto Fest features 250 to 300 photos from 40 to 50 amateur entrants. Winning photos will be determined based on the ballots cast by the general public attending the event, as well as a Judge’s Choice award selected by a professional photographer.
Certificates and prizes will be awarded in each of 11 categories. Cost is $5 per photo entry and $3 per entry in the Youth category.
