McKinley Presidential Library & Museum fundraiser Thursday

CANTON − The McKinley Presidential Library & Museum fall fundraiser, Red Carpet Spectacular, will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the museum, 800 McKinley Monument Drive NW.

Tickets are $40 for members and $45 for nonmembers.

Dress up as a favorite movie character for the costume contest, bid on a raffle basket, or test film knowledge in a variety of ways. Guests can enjoy classic movie fare like a popcorn bar, sweet treat swag bag and hot pretzels. Costumes are not required.

Amy Grant concert Friday at the Palace Theatre

Genealogical group to meet Thursday

CANTON − The Stark County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society will meet for a Show and Tell at 6 p.m. Thursday at the North Branch Library, 189 25th St. NW, in the basement meeting room. Everyone is invited to bring something from their family history to share with others and learn where others have found information.

GiGi’s Playhouse fundraiser Saturday

CANTON − GiGi’s Playhouse Canton – a local nonprofit Down Syndrome Achievement Center – will host its second annual Putts & Pints for a Purpose event from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday to raise funds supporting free therapeutic and educational programming for people with Down syndrome.

Putt-Putt on the Plaza will transform the green space in front of Centennial Plaza, 330 Court Ave NW, into a mini golf course. The event will include music, games, prizes, raffle baskets, a 50/50, and Booze Wagon raffle to support the families of GiGi’s Playhouse Canton.

Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health fundraiser Saturday

CANTON – Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health’s 18th annual Let Your Light Shine, Southern Nights, will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the DoubleTree by Hilton, 320 Market Ave. S.

The evening features a plated dinner and desserts, live auction items, and a video that highlights student mental health champions and their peer messages. This year’s gala will also include a drawing with participants having the chance to win $2,500.

Junior League of Stark County seeks nominations

CANTON – The Junior League of Stark County is accepting nominations for the 2024 Women of the Year. The recipients will be honored at a luncheon April 18, during National Volunteer Week.

All nominations will be received via The Junior League of Stark County Ohio Inc.’s website. All applications are due, timestamped, no later than 11:59 p.m. Oct. 15.

The Women of the Year Awards recognize two women annually: the Community Award (honoring a leader who has dedicated significant time and effort to the betterment of the Stark County community through service on multiple boards) and the President’s Award (honoring a leader who has made significant impact over time in one area of service, for example, education).

Stark Heart Walk is Sept. 30

CANTON – The Stark Heart Walk will be Sept. 30 at the Hall of Fame Village, 2626 Fulton Drive NW.

Participants, teams, and leashed pets are invited to celebrate heart and stroke survivors, raise lifesaving funds, and encourage physical activity. Stark Heart Walk is among 300 Heart Walks held in communities across the nation.

The Stark Heart Walk festivities kick off at 8:30 a.m. with the Healthy for Good Festival. Youngsters can experience the “Kids Zone” for fun activities. Participants can take part in health screenings and hands-only CPR demonstrations. The walk begins at 9:15 a.m. and includes a one- and three-mile paved course with hills.

Individuals and teams can register online at heart.org/starkheartwalk. The funds raised from the Stark Heart Walk go toward local programs in Stark County, including blood pressure control and CPR training. Funds also benefit research, advocacy, and public health education efforts to promote better health.

Silent Watch at mall Saturday

JACKSON TWP. − Stark County residents from all walks of life will honor the memory of veterans who have died from suicide at the 2023 Silent Watch on Saturday at Belden Village Mall.

The local gathering, sponsored by the Stark County Veterans Service Commission, will include a memorial display and volunteers standing at "parade rest" at 15- or 30-minute intervals from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Silent Watch display in the mall will include 22 pairs of boots from across all the military branches, each with a single rose and an American flag, along with flags representing each branch of the military, and "watch standers" at each corner of the stage.

De Ann Williams, executive director of the commission, said the goal is to show support for military families while raising awareness about the prevalence of suicide among veterans.

Big Read keynote event and book reading Sept. 28

JACKSON TWP. − The free Big Read keynote event and book reading, “The Best We Could Do” by award-winning author Thi Bui, will be Sept. 28 at Kent State University at Stark.

Bui is appearing as part of the National Endowment for the Arts Big Read and Arts Midwest, an initiative that seeks to broaden understanding of the world through the exploration of award-winning books that showcase diverse themes, voices and perspectives.

Jackson Township Historical Society to hold program on maps

JACKSON TWP. − The Jackson Township Historical Society, 7756 Fulton Dr. NW, will host the program “Oh, How We’ve Grown: Looking at Maps” by curator of the JTHS Greg Weekley at 7 p.m. Tuesday. He will talk about maps and how Jackson Township has changed. Membership meeting to follow. Admission is $5 (ages 14 and up). Members are free.

Stark County Civil War Roundtable to meet

LAKE TWP. − The Stark County Civil War Roundtable will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, 3088 State St. NW. Dan Welch will present the program “Boys, give them rocks," Stonewall Jackson’s defensive stand at Second Manassas.

‘Reverse Underground Railroad’ is program topic

MASSILLON − Authors David and Elise Meyers will present a program as part of Spring Hill's revived fall speaker series, Let's Talk History, at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Massillon Public Library auditorium.

They will discuss their 2022 publication, "The Reverse Underground Railroad in Ohio." Prior to the Civil War, thousands escaped slavery via the Underground Railroad. Untold others failed in the attempt. They were dragged back into bondage via the Reverse Underground Railroad, as it came to be called.

This program is presented in partnership between Spring Hill Historic Home Underground Railroad Site and Massillon Public Library. Registration is required for this program, and seats are limited. Car show Sept. 24 in Navarre

NAVARRE − The Navarre-Bethlehem Township Historical Society annual car show will be held Sept. 24, starting with setup at 9 a.m. Judging will begin at 1 p.m., with trophies presented at 4 p.m.

There will be dash plaques and food. All vehicles will be displayed across from Nickles Bakery at Main and Center streets.

Stark Parks Family Campout next weekend

PIKE TWP. − Stark Parks Family Campout on Saturday and Sept. 24 will be led by experienced instructors teaching families about basic camping skills in the wilderness.

Bring your tent and supplies to Fry Family Park, 2533 Farber St. SE, for an overnight experience. Snacks and breakfast will be provided. The cost is $5 for in-county residents and $10 for out of county. More information and registration are at www.StarkParks.com.

Swiss steak dinner Oct. 7

PIKE TWP. − Pike Grange, 1421 Battlesburg Road SE, will have a drive-thru Swiss steak dinner from 3 to 5 p.m. (or until sold out) Oct. 7.

The meal features Swiss steak, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, rhubarb sauce, applesauce, bread and dessert. Cost is $14. Drive in and someone will bring the food to your car.
