No reunion this year

BEACH CITY – The Beach City High School annual alumni reunion in May will not be held this year, according to a news release from Reunion Committee Chairman Kenny East.

Food drive for veterans

CANTON – The No Veteran Goes Hungry Food Drive to support the Serving Area Military and Veterans Center (SAM) in Massillon will continue through May 27.

The Stark County Sheriff’s Office is hosting two collection sites for nonperishable food items to serve local veterans and their families. Items can be dropped off at the Stark County Sheriff’s Office Safety Building, 4500 Atlantic Blvd. NE, and at the Concealed Handgun License office at the Stark County Sheriff’s Office Training Center, 143 First St. SE, Massillon.

Drop off nonperishable items from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Items will be collected and donated to the SAM Center following the conclusion of the drive.

Silent film at Palace

CANTON – The Canton Palace Theatre, 605 Market Ave. N, will show the silent film “Safety Last!” starring Harold Lloyd, with accompaniment by organist Jay Spencer at the Kilgen Organ, on May 15.

Doors open at 1 p.m., and the show is at 2 p.m. Admission is $10. Tickets are available in advance at cantonpalacetheatre.org and at the door.

Marvel mania at McKinley Museum

CANTON – Science Saturday: Marvel Mania will be at the Wm. McKinley Presidential Library and Museum from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Attendees are invited to come dressed as their favorite Marvel hero or villain. There will be activities and crafts centered around Marvel Super Hero powers. Work with magnetic slime, race balloon rockets, or play a sticky spider web game. The event is free with paid admission to the museum, 800 McKinley Monument Drive NW.

‘Weird Al’ at Palace

CANTON – "Weird Al" Yankovic will bring his Unfortunate Return of the Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour to the Canton Palace Theatre, 605 Market Ave. N, at 7:30 p.m. May 17.

Tickets range from $42.50 to $99.50, plus service fees; visit www.cantonpalacetheatre.org.

First Ladies site's hours change

CANTON – The First Ladies National Historic Site changed to summer hours May 1. It is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday through Oct. 31.

The Education Center, 205 Market Ave. S, offers free admission. It consists of three different museum exhibits, as well as a historic theater with a documentary film.

Guided tours of the Saxton House, 331 Market Ave. S, are at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. Tours can take 12 people each and begin at the Education Center. Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, visit www.firstladies.org.

Plant sale Saturday

CANTON – The Ohio State University Extension Stark County Master Gardener Volunteer Program will hold its annual Plant Expo from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Stark County Farm Bureau Building (the large red barn) on the Stark County Fairgrounds, 305 Wertz Ave. NW.

Sale plants are local to the area, and inspected by the Ohio Department of Agriculture to be free of disease and insects. Offerings include a variety of perennials, native plants, heirlooms, vegetables and herbs. The Plant Expo is open to the public and includes free parking and free admission. Cash or check are the only accepted form of payment.

All Plant Expo proceeds are reinvested into the Stark County Master Gardener Volunteer program to benefit educational and community outreach programs in the county sponsored by the organization.

Camp Buckeye program at library

DOVER – Dover Public Library, 525 N. Walnut St., will host a program on Camp Buckeye at 6:30 p.m. May 17 in the Community Room.

Lucy Richards, executive director, and Laura Milarcik, instructor for the Nature Discovery Program, will show photos (past and present) of Camp Buckeye, which is located on 90 wooded acres near Dundee Falls. Richards and Milarcik will tell how this Boy Scout Camp became a Christian Conference and Retreat Center. People are welcome to share their personal experiences as a Boy Scout and/or summer camper at Camp Buckeye.

Camp Buckeye began as a Boy Scout Camp in the 1940s and transitioned to a Christian Conference and Retreat Center in the 1980s. Today, the camp sponsors many programs and outreaches. It offers guest group facilities, fundraisers and nature classes.

MAPS dinner dance is May 22

GREEN – The MAPS Air Museum, 2260 International Parkway, will hold its May Dinner Dance on May 22, featuring the music of LaFlavour's "Five Decades of Hits."

Dinner begins at 4:30 p.m. with dancing from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets for both dinner and dancing are $21.75 per person. Advance ticket purchase is necessary for this option. For tickets and reservations, call 330-896-6332, ext. 110. Deadline for orders is 1 p.m. May 20.

No advance ticket purchase or reservations are required for dancing only (no dinner). The cost is $10 per person at the door. Admission for this option opens at 5:30 p.m.

Seating for both options is first-come, first-seated. No external food, beverages or alcohol are permitted. The MAPS Snack Bar will be open throughout the event.

Celebrity fitness trainer at gym

JACKSON TWP.– ReZist Ohio, a boutique gym at 8003 Hills & Dales Road NW, will host a free outdoor fitness class at 9:30 a.m. Saturday with celebrity fitness trainer Gino Caccavale on-site. Caccavale will teach the class, which is open to the public, in the parking lot in front of the studio.

Reading Under the Lights is Monday

LAKE TWP. – Lake Local Schools will hold Reading Under the Lights from 6 to 8 pm. Monday at Blue Streak Stadium, 658 Market Ave. N.

There will be literacy-based stations for K-6 students and families on the football field. Many community groups will be sharing summer programs for students, and special guest readers will appear over the scoreboard.

Stark Parks, in conjunction with Lake Elementary, will have a book walk set up around the track. Families can bring canned goods to donate to FISH. Families are encouraged to bring a beach towel and enjoy books on the football field.

Golden Girls comedy tribute

MASSILLON – Lions Lincoln Theatre, 156 Lincoln Way E, will host The Golden Girls Live Comedy Tribute from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

Denise Robb, Melissa Day, Kathy Lewis and Jenny Shaw Kessler will portray iconic characters Dorothy, Rose, Blanche and Sophia. Seating is reserved. VIP tickets, $30; main-floor tickets, $25; balcony and wheelchair/companion, $20. To purchase tickets, call 330-481-9105.

Drone informational session

MASSILLON – Stark Soil and Water Conservation District, 2650 Richville Drive SE, Suite 100, will host a free virtual presentation at 6 p.m. Wednesday highlighting drones.

Participants can learn how drones can help with planting cover crops, frost seeding, inventory, scouting for crop issues, and even spraying. This program is presented in partnership with Davey Resource Group via Zoom. Register for the workshop at www.starkswcd.org or call 330-451-7645.

Museum offers clay class

MASSILLON – Families are invited to make their own clay masterpieces in the Massillon Museum’s Family Clay Class from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. May 15.

Registration is now open and space is limited; visit MassMu.org/tickets or call 330-833-4061. The fee, $20 ($15 for Massillon Museum members) per person, includes all supplies.

The Massillon Museum’s ceramics studio is in the former Chamber of Commerce office at the corner of Lincoln Way East and City Hall Street. It is accessed through the museum’s main entrance.

Historical Society's garage sale this week

NAVARRE – The Navarre Bethlehem Township Historical Society's annual community garage sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Saturday in two Historical Society buildings at 123 High St., as well as in the garage and outside under tents. Plants also will be for sale.

The museums will be open June 1 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and almost every Wednesday until October for tours. Call 330-879-5938 to schedule a tour. If a Wednesday is not convenient, other arrangements can be made.

Make butterfly art at library branch

NAVARRE – The Massillon Public Library Askren Branch, 1200 Market St. NE, will hold a Butterfly Art session at noon Saturday.

Coffee with a Cop

PERRY TWP. – The next Coffee with a Cop program will be held at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at The Café at Michael D’s, 1407 Whipple Ave. NW.

The Coffee with a Cop program is designed to provide an opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn more about how the Stark County Sheriff’s Office serves the community.

The community is invited to ask questions, bring concerns, or simply get to know the members of the Stark County Sheriff’s Office better. The Coffee with a Cop program is a national initiative.
