Author to visit Rodman Public Library

ALLIANCE − Author Sarah Miller will visit Rodman Public Library at 2 p.m. Saturday as part of Rodman Public Library’s Fogle Author Series.

Miller has written both fiction and nonfiction. Her book “Marmee: A Novel of Little Women” will be released Tuesday. Miller is also the author of two historical novels for teens, both ALA Notable Books, including “Miss Spitfire: Reaching Helen Keller” and “The Lost Crown.”

Her nonfiction debut was “The Borden Murders: Lizzie Borden and the Trial of the Century.” Her other nonfiction work includes “Violet and Daisy: The Story of Vaudeville’s Famous Conjoined Twins” as well as “The Miracle and Tragedy of the Dionne Quintuplets.” On Nov. 8, she will release another nonfiction title, “Hanged! Mary Surratt and the Plot to Assassinate Abraham Lincoln.”

Pasture walk Thursday

SUGARCREEK TWP. − The Eastern Ohio Grazing Council will host a pasture walk at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Courtney Farm, 12000 Lawndell Road SW.

Kathie and Dick Courtney purchased the original farm in 1974. They and their son Stewart raise beef cattle, goats, hay, and timber. They have faced many challenges over the years as much of the farm is within the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District flood plain easement and is seasonally flooded.

Topics include pressurized water system sizing and installation, clipping pastures vs. not clipping, grazing seasonally flooded land, and unrolling hay for winter feeding.

Hospital offers free oral cancer screenings

CANTON − Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital is offering free oral cancer screenings beginning at 8 a.m. Friday at Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital Dental Services, located on the second floor of the hospital's Surgery Center/Cancer Center.

Appointments are required; call 330-489-1333 to schedule.

More than 54,000 people will get oral cavity or oropharyngeal cancer this year in the U.S., according to the American Cancer Society and the Oral Cancer Foundation. The most common symptom is a sore or pain in the mouth that does not heal nor go away. Early detection improves chances for successful treatment and saves lives.

Children’s Dyslexia Center gets grant

CANTON − Children’s Dyslexia Center of Canton recently received a $3,000 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation.

The foundation awarded more than $114,000 to Ohio nonprofit organizations, libraries and schools. The funds aim to narrow the gap between learners’ needs and programs’ financial resources by providing books, technology, equipment or materials to youth education programs.

Applications for the 2023 Dollar General Literacy Foundation grant cycle supporting youth, family, summer and adult literacy programs will be available at www.dgliteracy.org in January 2023. The grants aim to support schools, public libraries, and nonprofit organizations within a 15-mile radius of a Dollar General store or distribution center.

Coffee with a Cop is Nov. 3

CANTON − The next Stark County Sheriff’s Office Coffee with a Cop program will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Nov. 3 at Mount Olive Baptist Church, 1403 13th St. SE.

The Coffee with a Cop program is designed to provide an opportunity for community members to ask questions and to learn more about how the Sheriff’s Office serves the community. The Coffee with a Cop program is a national initiative adopted by the Stark County Sheriff’s Office.

Eagles tribute group at Palace

Historical Society open house Nov. 6

JACKSON TWP. − The Jackson Township Historical Society, 7756 Fulton Drive NW, will have an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Nov. 6.

The Society will present a display of military memorabilia and remember military veterans of the township. The Canton Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution will honor Vietnam Veterans by presenting them with their Vietnam War era pins and welcoming them home. Vietnam War era veterans are invited to the event to receive their pins.

Fundraiser for Ukraine is Nov. 6

JACKSON TWP. − Rotary District 6650 clubs are collaborating to present A Night for Ukraine, an evening of authentic Ukrainian food, entertainment and prizes at 3 p.m. Nov. 6 at St. George Serbian Church Center, 4667 Applegrove St. NW.

Tickets are on sale for $60 per person. Pproceeds benefit the efforts of Rotary Clubs on the ground in Ukraine and The Rotary Foundation's Disaster Relief fund. Past 2018-19 Rotary International President Barry Rassin will be attending as a keynote speaker.

Ohio’s District 6650 aims to raise more than $100,000 to support Ukraine. The evening’s entertainment will feature international entertainers from The Ukrainian Cultural Arts Association of Greater Cleveland, including the Harmonia Band, performing music from Eastern Europe on authentic folk instruments; the Kashtan Ukrainian Dancers; and the Zorya Ukrainian Vocal Ensemble. Rounding out the event will be a live prize auction.

Museum's Brown Bag Lunch topic is pioneers

MASSILLON − Thomas C. Sosnowski, Kent State University at Stark emeritus professor of history, will present “Pioneer Challenges: Arriving in Stark County in the Early 1800s” at Massillon Museum’s Brown Bag Lunch on Tuesday.

The free program will begin at 12:10 p.m. and conclude about 12:50 p.m. Guests are invited to bring lunch or purchase food at the Greatness Cafe in the museum lobby. The museum will provide complimentary cookies and coffee. No reservations are necessary. Massillon Museum is at 121 Lincoln Way E.

Music and animals at the Lincoln

MASSILLON − Lions Lincoln Theatre, 156 Lincoln Way E, will present Into the Blue - Electric Light Orchestra Tribute at 3 p.m. Nov. 6.

Into the Blue is made up of 11 professional musicians with strings from the Tuscarawas Philharmonic. Tickets are $20 main floor; $15 balcony and wheelchair/companion.

The Popovich Comedy Pet Theater will perform at 7 p.m. Nov. 4. The show features physical comedy and the juggling skills of former circus veteran and “America’s Got Talent” finalist Gregory Popovich, alongside the talents of his performing pets. Walsh University presents 'Facing the Future Together'

NORTH CANTON − Walsh University, with support from the Wilkof and Nolan families, will present an interfaith lecture, bringing local religious leaders together to share their thoughts on challenges facing communities of faith in the 21st century from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Barrette Business and Community Center.
