Free art exhibits, recital at Mount Union

ALLIANCE − The University of Mount Union will host art exhibits and a recital in September, all free and open to the public.

The Beeghly Gallery will feature recent works by artist David Kuntzman. Kuntzman earned a bachelor's degree from Mount Union. The exhibit will run through December. An artist’s reception will be held in the same location from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday.

Works by Nathan Prebonick will be featured in the Sally Otto Gallery, in the Giese Center for the Performing Arts, through Sept. 28.

Prebonick is a painter and printmaker from Akron who makes paintings about the relationship between the landscape, architecture and aesthetics. He earned his bachelor's degree in fine arts from the University of Akron Myers School of Art, where he is a professor in painting and foundations. He received his master's at the Rhode Island School of Design.

Meanwhile, a "Faculty and Guest Artist Recital" will be held at 3 p.m. Sept. 25 in Presser Recital Hall. The recital will feature Laura Mason, Maira Liliestedt, Elaine Anderson and Bohdan Subchak.

Ridgewood neighborhood to host artists’ showcase

CANTON – More than 25 artists and entertainers will display and sell original artwork and share live performances in the Ridgewood neighborhood from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The event is free and open to the public. Printed maps of the various artists’ locations will be available at tents at two locations: corner of 21st Street NW and Market Avenue NW, and at 318 23rd St. NW, near the corner of 23rd Street NW and Harvard Avenue NW.

The artists and entertainers are nearly all residents of Historic Ridgewood and will be displaying from their homes, driveways and patios. Veteran performer Michael O'Brien will sing Sinatra classics at 11:30 a.m. at 310 23rd St. NW, and Canton's EN-RICH-MENT youth drumline will perform at 1 p.m. at the corner of 22nd Street NW and University Avenue NW.

There is no charge to stroll the streets, visit with artists and enjoy performances, but a donation to help defray costs is appreciated. Raffle tickets for baskets of gift cards and items from local businesses are available for purchase. The first raffle ticket is free for registering.

Woman’s Club Holiday Boutique is Oct. 7-8

CANTON − The 27th annual Canton Woman’s Club Holiday Boutique will take place 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct 7 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 8 at the club’s historic Victorian house at 822 Market Ave. N.

Exhibitors will offer a variety of products, the Canton Woman’s Club Gourmet Pantry will sell treats, and lunch will be available at the cafe from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Stark County Sneaker XPO at Civic Center

CANTON − The Stark County Sneaker XPO will be from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Memorial Civic Center, 1101 Market Ave. N.

There will be more than 100 vendors, lots of raffles, and food provided all day. Tickets will be sold at the door for this event. Prices are $20 for 18 and older, and $10 for those younger than 18.

Johnstown Flood program at Dover library

DOVER − Local storyteller and author Cristie Merce will present a program about the Johnstown Flood at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Community Room of the Dover Public Library, 525 N. Walnut St.

She will share the story of how her great-grandfather survived the flood of May 31, 1889, that took more than 2,000 lives. Register online at www.doverlibrary.org or call the library at 330-343-6123.

Ham dinner Saturday

EAST SPARTA − Pike Grange, 1421 Battlesburg Road SE, will have a drive-thru ham dinner Saturday from 3 p.m. until sold out.

JACKSON TWP. − SCORE’s NEO Women Connect will present a Lunch, Learn, Network event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 27 at the Kent State University at Stark Conference Center, 6000 Frank Ave. NW.

Cancer Assistance Support Team receives award, grant

MASSILLON − The Cancer Assistance Support Team has received the 2022 President’s Award for Outstanding Nonprofit (Ohio) from ARC Randolph and Associates of Pittsburgh.

The Cancer Assistance Support Team also received a $5,000 grant. In announcing the award, ARC Randolph and Associates President Donna Nedelk, a Jackson High School graduate, praised the work of CAST in supporting members of the greater Massillon community who are struggling to make ends meet as the result of a cancer diagnosis.

Pittsburgh-based ARC Randolph and Associates is a regulatory compliance consulting and training company providing technical support services nationwide to the natural gas and utility industries.

Previous Massillon-based nonprofit recipients of ARC Randolph and Associates financial awards include the Massillon Public Library in support of its 2017 building restoration as well as the Massillon Salvation Army.

Tribute shows at Lions Lincoln Theatre

MASSILLON − The Lions Lincoln Theatre, 156 Lincoln Way E, will host two tribute shows next weekend.

A Barry Manilow/Neil Diamond Tribute Show will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Vegas McGraw – A Tim McGraw Tribute performed by Nashville recording artist and Las Vegas entertainer Adam D. Tucker will be at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 25.

The Massillon Public Library Children’s Department invites families to the September StoryWalk. Learn history of Molly Stark Park

MINERVA − The Minerva Public Library, 677 Lynnwood Drive, will host a presentation at 7 p.m. Monday by Trevor Householder, historian for Stark Parks, on Molly Stark Park in Nimishillen Township.

Molly Stark Sanatorium was built nearly 100 years ago to be a therapeutic site for those suffering from tuberculosis. The hospital continued until the 1990s, and in 2009 became a Stark park at 7900 Columbus Road NE. The program will include photos and facts of the site, along with interesting stories.

Community Freedom Summit at Walsh on Saturday

NORTH CANTON − Walsh University and Not For Sale: One Step At A Time have joined to fight human trafficking by hosting a Community Freedom Summit and Freedom Walk for the past four years. This year’s event will take place from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the Marlene and Joe Toot Global Learning Center at Walsh University.

Not for Sale is a nonprofit dedicated to preventing human trafficking.

This year’s event will focus on labor trafficking. Attorney Megan Mattimoe will deliver the keynote. Harold D. Souza will share a testimonial of his experience of being trafficked. The event will end with a one-mile Freedom Walk in silence to pray and reflect on the tragedy of human trafficking.

Lions Club sets craft show

NORTH CANTON − The North Canton Lions Club will hold a Fall Craft Show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 15 at Hoover High School.

Orders being taken for Zoar Village Fall Bulb Sale

ZOAR – Historic Zoar Village’s annual Fall Bulb Sale is taking orders through Oct. 1. All proceeds go toward the historic site’s educational programming, operations and restoration of museum buildings.

The sale features a wide selection of bulbs for daffodils, tulips, crocuses, irises, lilies and hyacinths. Bulbs are priced at $13 with a special “the works” package of 75 bulbs for $52. Mums in 8-inch pots are available for $10 each. Mum colors vary and cannot be guaranteed.
