Medicare seminar at library Oct. 9

ALLIANCE − Jay Culler, an expert on Medicare, will present “Medicare 101: A Simple Guide to Medicare Made Clear and Easy,” an informational seminar, at 6 p.m. Oct. 9 in the auditorium at Rodman Public Library, 215 E. Broadway St. He will repeat the seminar in the auditorium at 6 p.m. Nov. 20.

Firearms safety program Monday

ALLIANCE − The Stark County Sheriff’s Office will present “Firearms Safe Handling and Storage” at Rodman Public Library, 215 E. Broadway St., from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday.

The free community education opportunity is a basic firearms course that covers a wide range of firearm-related topics, including safe handling and storage and understanding the carrying a concealed weapon and constitutional carry law. Participants will be able to ask questions and engage with instructors.

Registration is required to attend the program and should be made through the Stark County Sheriff’s Office at starkcountysheriff.timetap.com.

5K to close downtown streets Saturday

CANTON − The Police K-9 Association K-9 5K race, which takes place from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the downtown area, will result in several roads being closed.

The following streets will be shut down during the event: Market Avenue N from Second Street NW to 12th Street NW, the right lane and bicycle lane of Cleveland Avenue N from Second Street NW to 12th Street NW, and all cross streets between Market and Cleveland from Second Street NW to 12th Street NW.

It will also close the eastbound lane and bicycle lane of 12th Street NW from Cleveland to Market from 9:45 to 10:15 a.m. Tuscarawas Street W will remain open.

People attending the Canton Women’s Club event on the same day should travel southbound on Walnut Avenue NE from 12th Street NE and then turn west (right) on Ninth Street NW. When approaching Market Avenue N, proceed with caution and look for an officer to direct guests into the parking lot. There will be a dedicated lane coned off.

'East Wing Songs II’ at Christ Presbyterian Church

CANTON − The National First Ladies’ Library will host the world premiere of a new set of musical compositions inspired by the first ladies of the United States at 2 p.m. Oct. 15 at the Christ Presbyterian Church, 530 Tuscarawas St. W.

The free performance, titled “East Wing Songs Volume II,” features a lecture-recital format. The first installment of "East Wing Songs" debuted in Canton last fall and toured around the country.

The church has on-site parking and is handicap accessible. Free tickets are available at https://eastwingsongs2.eventbrite.com. For a small additional charge, participants can tour the “Beyond Camelot” Jackie Kennedy exhibit at National First Ladies Library and Museum following the performance, with a reception to follow.

Free health and wellness fair Saturday

CANTON − A free health and wellness fair will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Deliverance Christian Church, 2631 Harvard Ave. NW.

Besides health and wellness information, the event will include free healthy snacks and giveaways, voter registration, podiatry consultations and information from the Ohio State Extension Office and Ohio Commission on Minority Health.

Backyard party Oct. 14

CANTON − Ms. Ida’s Backyard Boogie will be from noon to 6 p.m. Oct. 14 on Len Court NW between Rose and Brown NW with music, DJs, dance, food vendors and creative arts.

The event is sponsored by Stark County Mental Health and Addiction Recovery and Stark County Urban Minority Alcoholism Drug Abuse Outreach Program.

Toastmasters Club meets on Wednesdays

CANTON − The Canton chapter of the International Toastmasters Club meets at 6 p.m. every Wednesday at Passion Blues Restaurant, 12th Street and Walnut Avenue NE. The first three meetings are free. Mission BBQ donation buys wreaths for Forest Hill Cemetery

CANTON − Forest Hill Cemetery received sponsored wreaths because of the generous donations from local Mission BBQ customers who support the mission. Earlier this year, Mission BBQ announced a national donation of $369,590 to the Wreaths Across America program. From this donation, Forest Hill Cemetery received 287 wreaths, which volunteers will place at the cemetery Dec. 16 on National Wreaths Across America Day.

The Canton Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution recently presented a certificate of appreciation to Mission BBQ in Jackson Township. As a participant in Wreaths Across America, the Canton Chapter DAR is a sponsor of Forest Hill Cemetery.

“This is a wonderful start to our WAA sponsorship at Forest Hill Cemetery,” said Lisa Tolloti, of the Canton Chapter DAR, noting that Forest Hill Cemetery has more than 1,000 veterans' graves.

Wreaths Across America is best known for its annual wreath-laying ceremonies across the country at more than 3,700 participating locations. Its goal is to place a live balsam fir veteran’s wreath at every American veteran's headstone.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s is Oct. 14

MASSILLON − The Alzheimer’s Association Greater East Ohio will hold the Stark County Walk to End Alzheimer’s at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 14 at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s supports the association’s free educational programs and support groups, family/caregiver care services ,and advancements in treatment and research.

Casual Clay programs Thursdays in the Massillon Museum’s Ceramics Studio

MASSILLON − Adults and children of all ages are invited to make their own clay masterpieces during Casual Clay programs in the Massillon Museum’s Ceramics Studio from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Thursdays. Programs will be held Oct. 5, 12 and 19; Nov. 2, 9 and 16; and Dec. 7 and 14.

History Discussion Group topic is colorful or famous relatives

MASSILLON − The Massillon Museum’s History Discussion Group will meet from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday. Moderator Chris Craft will lead a discussion about participants’ famous or colorful relatives.

Meyers Lake Village Council work session Oct. 9

MEYERS LAKE − Meyers Lake Village Council will hold a work session from 6 to 7 p.m. Oct. 9, before the regular council meeting, for a discussion on a road levy.

Wilmot Fire and Rescue ham dinner Oct. 8

WILMOT − Wilmot Fire and Rescue will have a curbside carryout only ham dinner from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 8. Drive-thru pickup will be in front of the Wilmot Fire Department with volunteers bringing meals to your vehicle.

Dinners are $12 each and feature ham, scalloped potatoes, green beans, applesauce, coleslaw and dinner roll. Wilmot Fire Department is at 204 Mill St. Delivery within the village of Wilmot is available; call 330-359-5995. Bring the correct change if possible. All proceeds benefit the volunteer department.
