Children’s crafts at Rodman library

ALLIANCE − Children ages 7-12 are invited to Rodman Public Library, 215 E. Broadway St., at 4 p.m. Thursday to make zentangle pumpkins.

All materials are free for monthly kids crafting programs sponsored by Friends of Rodman Public Library, but space is limited. Registration is required; visit rodmanlibrary.evanced.info/signup or call the Children’s Department at 330-821-2665, ext. 223.

‘Screamfest’ at the Palace

CANTON − The Palace Theatre, 605 Market Ave. N, continues Screamfest, a monthlong series of horror films, on the following dates:

  • Friday – “Get Out”

  • Saturday – “The Shining”

  • Oct. 28 – “The Witch”

  • Oct. 29 – “Nosferatu”

Dance on Wednesday afternoons

CANTON − Dance every Wednesday from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at the Polish American Citizens Club, 1605 Henry Ave. SW. Everyone is welcome to dance or just listen to the Black Diamond Band providing polkas, waltzes, ballroom, line dancing. Admission is $3.

Donate blankets and towels for animal rescues

CANTON − A drive to collect new and used blankets and towels for local animal rescues and shelters is underway through mid-November. Donations can be dropped off at seven locations around Stark County.

Clean towels and blankets are needed to care for animals and particularly when winter is approaching. Small holes and discolorations are acceptable.

Participating drop off locations include: Canton Museum of Art, North Canton Public Library, Massillon Museum, Canton Ballet, Stark County Emergency Veterinary Clinic, Alterclinic Animal Care and Pet Supplies Plus of North Canton.

Dinner dance at MAPS Air Museum

GREEN − The Military Air Preservation Society Halloween Dinner Dance will be 7 to 10 p.m. Oct. 29 at the MAPS Air Museum, 2260 International Parkway.

Two options are available for attending. Option One is for those who want a sit-down dinner with music and dancing afterward. Reservations are needed. The cost is $21.72 per person. Food will be provided by Mr. Mike's Catering and features a pulled pork or chicken salad sandwich, macaroni and cheese, cole slaw and a bottle of water. Option Two is for those who only want to attend the dance. Dance-only attendees may pay at the door, but it is on a first-come, first-served basis. No reservations are needed. To attend only the dance, arrive at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $10 at the door.

Doors open for dinner at 5:30 p.m. LaFlavour will provide live music, with the theme of "Five Decades of Hits." A costume contest will be judged during the break.

Fire department open house Saturday

LAKE TWP. −Uniontown Fire Department will have an open house and pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. The event will include firetruck rides, demonstrations, an inflatable bounce house, a scavenger hunt, and raffle baskets.

Stark County Civil War Roundtable to meet

LAKE TWP. − The Stark County Civil War Roundtable will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church, 3088 State St. NW. Chris Bagley will discuss “Horses at Gettysburg.”

An estimated 80,000 horses and mules accompanied the opposing armies to Gettysburg. The program describes the requirements, procedures, and care of Civil War cavalry and artillery horses. He has been a licensed battlefield guide at Gettysburg National Military Park since 2016. Last year, he published the book “The Horse at Gettysburg Prepared for the Day of Battle” through Gettysburg Publishing.

Stark County Civil War Roundtable dues are $20 per member, or $25 for two or more at the same residence.

Magnolia to flush hydrants

MAGNOLIA − The Magnolia Water Department will be flushing fire hydrants this week between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Water may appear discolored after the hydrants are flushed.

CPR class offered Thursday

MASSILLON – The American Heart Association’s Friends and Family CPR class will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Stark County Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Training Center, 143 First St. SE.

The course teaches the lifesaving skills of adult hands-only CPR, adult CPR with breaths, child CPR, adult and child AED use, infant CPR, and choking relief for adults, children, and infants.

Register for the free course by visiting the Sheriff’s Office website, clicking on "Community Training,” and following the prompts to select the course at the Stark County Sheriff’s Office Training Center.

Massillon Museum hosts book signing

MASSILLON – The Massillon Museum, 121 Lincoln Way E, will host author Gregg Ficery from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday. He will sign copies of his new book, “Gridiron Legacy: Pro Football’s Missing Origin Story.”

Accusations of attempted bribery and game-fixing in the 1906 championship football series between the professional Massillon Tigers and their rivals, the professional Canton Bulldogs, led to the end of high-level pro football in Ohio for nearly a decade. Ficery’s great-grandfather, Bob Shiring, captain of the Tiger team, was absolved, but the full truth of the scandal remained veiled. Ficery’s decade of research has revealed several missing pieces of the historical record and solved the mystery of the incident.

Police Department employment open house Oct. 28

MINERVA − The Minerva Police Department will have an employment open house from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 28.

Minerva has a full-time patrolman's position available. Starting hourly wage is $23.67 to $24.17 plus full benefits. No appointment is necessary; just stop in to fill out an application, take a tour of the department, and speak with the chief. People must have a current department ID and Ohio driver’s license for a tour.

Coffee with a Cop event

PERRY TWP. − The public is invited to the next Coffee with a Cop event from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Monday at Sweet T’s Café and Confections, 3214 Lincoln Way E. The Coffee with a Cop program is designed to provide an opportunity for community members to ask questions and to learn more about how the Stark County Sheriff’s Office serves the community.

The community is invited to ask questions, bring concerns, or simply get to know the members of the Sheriff’s Office better. The Coffee with a Cop program is a national initiative.

Photo club meeting, program

SUGAR CREEK TWP. − The Wilderness Center Nature Photo Club will meet from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at The Wilderness Center, 9877 Alabama Ave. SW.

Photographer Don Holycross will show and discuss photographs of the Hocking Hills area and shooting fall colors. His presentation will focus on his use of high dynamic range photography, using up to seven exposures to create a single image. He will delve into his use of various computer programs for post processing. The public is welcome to the free program.
