Nerf Night at library

ALLIANCE – Teens ages 12-18 are invited to the January Nerf Night from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday. Teens should start to assemble in the Main Library auditorium at 5:15 p.m. for the after-hours event. Participants may bring in their own Nerf weapons or use some provided by the library. The library will also provide Nerf darts. White House history is lecture topic

CANTON – The McKinley Presidential Library & Museum is bringing back its in-person lecture series Soup at Six at 6 p.m. Thursday. Executive Director Kim Kenney will present her program “The People’s House: A History of the White House.” The program covers the design and major restorations of the house and features an in-depth look at the rooms of McKinley’s White House from the museum’s archives.

Movies at the Palace

CANTON – The Palace Theatre, 605 Market Ave. N, will show the movie “Dune” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and 2 p.m. Jan. 9. Admission is $7 at the door. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and 1 p.m. Jan. 9. The movie is rated PG-13.

The movie “Frozen” will be shown as the First Friday Family Movie at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Admission is $2 at the door. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The movie is rated PG.

Tour the Palace

CANTON – Learn about the history and architecture of the Canton Palace Theatre, 605 Market Ave. N, with a walking tour from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday. The tour is limited to 20 people. Tickets are $10 per person.

Tween game night Saturday

CANTON – Tweens ages 10 to 13 are invited to a Gaming: Unplugged, a night of unplugged STEM and team-building activities, from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the McKinley Presidential Library & Museum. Museum staff will supervise.

Cost is $10 for members or $12 for nonmembers (per youth). Limited spots are available to comply with COVID-19 safety measures. Masks will be required for all participants, including staff. Children can learn about the orchestra

CANTON – The Canton Symphony Orchestra will present SymphonyLand at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Saturday, as well as on Feb. 5 and March 12. This series of trio performances introduces children ages 3-6 to the world of the orchestra in a fun, interactive way. Each trio performance is programmed around a children’s storybook and features a different instrument family (string, brass and woodwind) performing a variety of orchestral repertoire.

Performances will be at Zimmermann Symphony Center, 2331 17th St. NW. Strings will be featured on Jan. 8, woodwinds on Feb. 5 and brass on March 12. Dover Public Library challenges public to read 100 books this year

DOVER – The Dover Public Library invites the community to participate in The 100 Book Club Reading Challenge in 2022. Participants are invited to read 100 books of their own choosing over the course of 2022 and to record their accomplishments in a special reading log.

The goal of The 100 Book Club is to nurture the love of reading in the community. First started in 2014, The 100 Book Club has become a Dover Public Library tradition. A recognition reception will be held for those who completed the challenge.

Membership is open to readers ages 6 and older. Participants can join at any time during the year, but only titles completed before Dec. 31, 2022 will count. Each title can be counted only once per calendar year. Paperbacks, hardbacks, large print, graphic novels, eBooks, audiobooks and eAudiobooks count. Magazines and comic books do not count, nor do picture books that are read by patrons older than 10.

Participants who have read 100 books in the calendar year must submit their reading logs to the library for verification. Once verified, these patrons will become club members and receive a club T-shirt, a membership card and an invitation to the library’s annual 100 Book Club recognition reception. The club is open to all residents of the Tuscarawas Valley. Anyone interested is encouraged to stop by the library to pick up a 2022 reading log. Indoor Farmers Market at church

JACKSON TWP. – St. Stephen Martyr Lutheran Church, 4600 Fulton Drive NW, will host an Indoor Farmers Market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Featured items will include breads, candy, cheese and goat milk, rolls, scones, maple syrup, honey, apples and apple butter, bee products, beef products, cinnamon nuts, wooden toys, essential oils, home-grown popcorn, fresh mushrooms, cookies, monster sauces and rubs, and micro greens.

The café will serve homemade vegetable soup that can be eaten in or bought by the quart to take home. Pre-recorded entertainment in the sanctuary will feature the musical talents of many of the youth church members. Use the front or rear entrance. The church is fully handicapped accessible. ‘12 Angry Jurors’ next weekend

MASSILLON – The Luminescent Moon Theatre Company will present the play “12 Angry Jurors” next weekend. The play is adapted by Sherman L. Sergel and based on the movie by Reginald Rose.

“12 Angry Jurors” is the story of a 19-year-old man standing trial for a stabbing of his father. Jurors are asked to decipher if he is guilty or innocent. The show is produced by special arrangement with The Dramatic Publishing Co., of Woodstock, Ill.

Virtual program for kids

MASSILLON – During Virtual Kids Create, the Massillon Public Library’s Children’s Programmers create crafts and other fun projects in this recurring children’s program held at 4:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month. This program is free and open to children and their families in grades K through 6.

On Jan. 11, the program will explore “Little House on the Prairie.” Dress in pioneer clothing, make a whirligig button toy, experience pioneer food and enjoy stories about the old days of the American West.

Registration is required to view Kids Create live online via Zoom. Register only one person to represent your family. Then, come into the Children’s Department before the program date to pick up your packet of supplies. A Zoom invitation will be emailed to registered participants before the start of the program.

MassMu 'Do the Mu!' is New Year hats

MASSILLON – Diane Boslett will lead a free, family-friendly “Do the Mu” workshop from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Massillon Museum. Participants will decorate a fancy hat to celebrate the new year, including some resolutions to improve their lives.

Boslett is a licensed visual arts teacher with a bachelor of arts degree from Ashland College and a master of education in integrated arts from the University of Rio Grande. A member of the Ohio Art Education Association, she teaches private lessons and workshops at Massillon Museum and Massillon Public Library, and she works as an activities assistant at the Canton Christian Home.

Guests can join the workshop any time between noon and 2 p.m. Reservations are not necessary. All materials, tools and instruction are included free. Masks are required for all attendees 3 or older.

Trivia game at library

MASSILLON – Massillon Public Library’s Young Adult Department will host a trivia session at 6 p.m. Friday in the library auditorium, 208 Lincoln Way E. The game is geared toward teens, but anyone is welcome to play. Players need to download the Kahoot! app to participate. The topic for January’s Kahoot! Trivia is “Live-Action Disney Movies.” The winner will receive a prize.

Canton police officer to speak

PLAIN TWP. – The College Club of Canton will present Officer LaMar Sharpe speaking at the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. birthday observance at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 15 at Trinity United Church of Christ, 3909 Blackburn Road NW. The public is invited. Attendees will be required to wear masks.

Sharpe has been a police officer for the City of Canton for 21 years and is assigned to the Community Involvement Unit. Sharpe is founder and president of the Be A Better Me Foundation, which mentors inner city youth, provides free tutoring, recognizes achievements and offers tangible support with school supplies and clothing.

The College Club of Canton will have a general meeting at 10:15 a.m.
