Canal Fulton Public Library announces programs

CANAL FULTON­ – The Canal Fulton Public Library has announced several Information Department programs for January. Register for them by stopping by the Information Desk or call the library at 330-854-4148.

Tech Tuesdays, every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Book a 30-minute or hourlong session with the library’s tech trainer. Work one-on-one with a person who is able to help guide you in your tech questions. Bring your device along. Make a reservation at 330-854-4148.

Adult Craft Class, 6 p.m. Jan 3: Register in advance for an evening of crafting.

Genealogy Databases, 6 p.m. Jan. 9: Discover how the library’s databases can help you learn more about your family history. Register in advance.

Adult and Teen Planner Club, 11 a.m. Jan. 14: This program is all about finding the right planner, and helping you determine which goals to prioritize in the upcoming year. For ages 13 and up. Register in advance.

C&A’s CEO Joe French named to Ohio Early Childhood Advisory Council

CANTON­ – Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health’s Chief Executive Officer Joe French has been appointed by Gov. Mike DeWine to serve on the Early Childhood Advisory Council.

The council provides input and guidance to the administration on early childhood programs. The members includes a diverse array of stakeholders from early childhood programs, schools, health, social services, unions, philanthropy and other groups.

Prior to being named CEO at C&A in 2015, French started his career as a teacher in Plain Local Schools. From there, he became director of Little Angels Preschool/Zion Child Development Center, then becoming executive director at the Early Childhood Education Alliance in Alliance.

A past graduate of Leadership Stark County, French serves as a Meyers Lake council member, and sits on the following boards: Stark County Court of Common Pleas Advisory Board, Leadership Stark County board member, Stark County Library, JRC and Adventure Place Advisory Board.

Kids movies at the YMCA

CANTON – The Eric Snow YMCA, 420 Third St. NW, will present Kids Night Out - Night at the Movies from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Jan. 6.

Kids ages 5 to 12 can enjoy an evening of games, crafts, dinner, and a viewing of "The Bad Guys" movie. Register by Jan. 5 at https://tinyurl.com/bdesemnr.

Free glassblowing demonstrations

CANTON – The Glass Garden of Canton, 4330 Avondale Lane NW, invites anyone to watch its glassblowers as they make a variety of glass art in the hot-shop.

Visitors are welcome to ask questions. The event is every Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. No reservation necessary.

Stark County agencies to get Violence Against Women Act Grants

COLUMBUS – Seven Stark County agencies will receive some of the more than $4 million in federal grants recently announced to reduce violence against women in Ohio.

The program assists local governments and nonprofit community-based organizations in strengthening services to victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. In total, 125 grants were awarded to 95 local agencies in 47 counties.

The following Stark County agencies will receive funds for 2023:

  • Stark County Prosecutor's Office: $45,296.

  • Stark County Sheriff's Office: $44,381.

  • Canton City Law Department: $36,396.

  • Massillon Law Department: $43,493.

  • Louisville Police Department: $16,071.

  • P.A.C.E. Inc Alliance Area Domestic Violence Shelter: $18,848.

  • Domestic Violence Project Inc.: $44,400.

Sports card show is Jan. 14

HARTVILLE – The Hartville Sports Card Show will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 14 at the Hartville Marketplace & Flea Market, 1289 Edison St. NW.

More than 30 vendors will be selling sports cards, memorabilia and autographs. This show is free general admission and will be located in the food court at the Hartville Marketplace. For vending information, contact Mike Barns at 330-417-1400.

Author to talk about sitcoms

JACKSON TWP. – The Jackson Township Branch of the Stark County District Library will host “A Funny Program about Funny Programs: The Greatest Sitcoms of All Time” from 2 to 3 p.m. Jan. 21 in the meeting room, 7487 Fulton Drive NW.

Cancer Assistance Support Team honored

MASSILLON – Cancer Assistance Support Team (CAST) has been named a “2022 Top-Rated Nonprofit” by GreatNonprofits.

GreatNonprofits is a website for community recommendations of charities and nonprofits. Cancer Assistance Support Team provides financial assistance for patients in Stark County who don't know how they will pay cancer-related bills, prescription copays, and/or utilities.

The Top-Rated Nonprofit Award is based on the rank and number of reviews that CAST received from volunteers, donors and aid recipients.

Noon Year's Eve at Massillon library

MASSILLON – The Massillon Public Library, 208 Lincoln Way E, invites children to celebrate New Year’s Eve without staying up late.

The library will celebrate Noon Year's Eve from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Children can make crafts and participate in other fun activities before counting down to noon with a parade and balloon drop in the rotunda. No registration is required.

For more information, contact the Children’s Department at 330-832-9831, ext. 317. All library locations and services will close by 1 p.m. for New Year's Eve.

Branch library to have new phone number soon

NAVARRE – The Barry Askren Memorial Branch Library, 1200 Market St. NE, will have a new phone number starting Dec. 28. The new number will be 330-791-7061.

Until then, all calls for the Barry Askren Memorial Branch Library must be made to the Main Massillon Public Library Branch at 330-823-9831.

Canton woman wins new furnace

NORTH CANTON – The winner of Quality Heating & Cooling’s Veterans Day Furnace Giveaway is Sarah Huibregtse of Canton.

To show its appreciation for the sacrifice that veterans have made, Quality Heating & Cooling, 501 Applegrove St. NW, held a Veterans Day Furnace Giveaway, accepting nominations throughout November for a free Trane furnace valued between $4,500 and $7,000. Huibregtse’s new furnace was installed in time for the holidays. She was nominated by 10 people.

Reid Sittler, president of Quality Heating & Cooling, said: “As a Marine Corps veteran, I’m thankful for the veterans that served our country by protecting our freedoms and we love to give back to our community.”
