Concerts at Mount Union this week

ALLIANCE − The Mount Union Concert Choir and Cantus will perform during the 2022 Christmas Festival, Thursday through Saturday.

The show, titled “Shalom,” will be held in Brush Performance Hall in the Giese Center for the Performing Arts. Thursday’s performance begins at 11:15 a.m., and Friday and Saturday performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Doors will open 30 minutes before show start time.

Limited tickets are available by visiting mountunion.edu/boxoffice, calling the box office at 330-821-2565 or ordering in person at the box office from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday when classes are in session. Tickets are free, although required.

Lego building competition is Thursday at library

ALLIANCE − Rodman Public Library, 215 E. Broadway St., will host a Lego building competition from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday.

Kids, ages 12-18, will work in teams of two or three members to create a winter/holiday-themed display using a variety of Legos provided by the library, including Lego Mindstorms. Nominations open for Regula Awards for public and community service

ALLIANCE − The University of Mount Union’s Regula Center for Public Service and Civic Engagement has announced nominations are now open for the second annual Ralph Regula Award for Public Service and the Mary Regula Award for Community Service.

The Ralph Regula Award for Public Service recognizes an individual who exemplifies the ideals of the late Ralph Regula who spent his career as a public servant. It is given annually to a person employed in the public sector in Stark County who is dedicated to their career and works to better Stark County.

The Mary Regula Award for Community Service is given annually to an individual in Stark County who volunteers their time to improve the lives of those in Stark County and serving others.

Nominations can be submitted through forms found at mountunion.edu/regula-center and will be accepted until mid-January. The award winners will be recognized at the Regula Center annual meeting, held March 23 at the Alliance Country Club.

'The Children's Blizzard' is 2023 One Book, One Community selection

ALLIANCE − The 2023 One Book One Community selection is “The Children’s Blizzard” by Melanie Benjamin. It is a story of a freak blizzard that struck the Great Plains in 1888, threatening the lives of hundreds of immigrant homesteaders, especially their children.

Benjamin, who has authored several books with another book to be released next year, will visit Alliance on March 23. Programs will be held at Rodman Public Library prior to the author’s visit and details will be forthcoming.

Copies of “The Children’s Blizzard” will be available for sale at the library by early December.

Stark Vintage Market is at fairgrounds Saturday

CANTON – The Stark Vintage Market, an antiques and artisan market, will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Stark County Fairgrounds, 305 Wertz Ave NW.

The show will feature a wide variety of antiques, collectibles, artisan and repurposed goods − everything from furniture, pottery, vintage clothing and linens, to military, jewelry, retro toys, comics and household goods.

Canal Fulton Community Band to perform Thursday

CANAL FULTON − The 50-member Canal Fulton Community Band will perform international marches, Broadway tunes and holiday music at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Exploration Gateway. The concert is free, and tickets are not required. The Exploration Gateway is inside Sippo Lake Park-North Entrance, 5710-5712 12th St. NW.

Santa Claws for a Cause wildlife event and donation drive

PERRY TWP. – The Wildlife Conservation Center at Sippo Lake Park will host Santa Claws for a Cause from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Dec. 16.

Santa will deliver gifts to wildlife residents at the park’s west entrance.

Grimble, the Great Horned Owl, will be featured as the “Grinch,” along with visits from other animals, including Kessie the Kestrel and Jasper the Red Fox. Food giveaway Saturday

CANTON – The annual Warren “Speedy” Pyles Food Giveaway presented by Canton Outside of Canton will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul AME Church, 1800 Tuscarawas St. E, and will last until all food is distributed.

Turkeys, hams, and perishable and nonperishable items as well as gift cards will be available.

AlterClinic Animal Care opens TNR wing for cats

CANTON – AlterClinic Animal Care has opened the doors of its new TNR (trap-neuter-return) community cat wing at 2302 Fulton Road NW. The clinic has renovated a portion of the building that is now dedicated to the sole purpose of spaying and neutering community cats.

AlterClinic will accept up to 30 trapped cats daily, Monday through Thursday. The clinic will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Service is first-come, first-served. No appointment is needed. The clinic will allow community cats to go home the same day as surgery unless prior arrangements have been made and space allows. They will have food and water and be kept in a clean and dry environment.

There is no limit to how many cats a person can bring. AlterClinic asks that if you plan on bringing five or more cats at one time, call ahead to see if there is still space available for that day. Aunt Susie’s reorganizes, relocates

JACKSON TWP. – The new executive director of Aunt Susie’s Cancer Wellness Center is Dr. Dina K. Rooney.

To accommodate the service charity’s expansion to include male cancer patients, offices have moved from the former Hoover Co. building in North Canton to the Hillsdale Shopping Center at 2813 Whipple Ave. NW.

The organization offers a variety of services to cancer patients, including transportation to treatments and doctor visits, house cleaning, wig and hair styling, meal and grocery assistance, and prosthetics. Visit www.auntsusies.org or call 330-400-1215 for more information.

Aunt Susie's was founded in 2012 by Marlene A. Mason in tribute to her friend Susan Nixon, who lost her cancer battle. Mason remains a volunteer.

Stark County Artists Exhibition at Massillon Museum

MASSILLON – The Massillon Museum’s 2022 Stark County Artists Exhibition will continue through Jan. 15. The exhibition is annually open to present and former Stark County residents and to those working in Stark County, 18 and older. Artwork in any medium is considered.

Massillon Museum’s Aultman Health Foundation Gallery will include 70 works of art selected from 225 submitted by 85 artists, 49 of whom are represented in the show. The Stark County Artists Exhibition can be seen from 9:30 a.m.m to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 2 to 5 p.m. Sundays, except Christmas Day and New Year's Day. The museum, 121 Lincoln Way E, will close at noon on Christmas Eve.

Christmas on Hoover Farm is Sunday

NORTH CANTON − Christmas on Hoover Farm, 1875 East Maple St., is from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

At the free, family-friendly event, guests can take photos with Santa in the historic Hoover Tannery (bring your own camera), listen to musicians from Glen Oak High School while viewing the decorations throughout the Victorian farmhouse and museum, and take a horse-drawn wagon rides through Hoover Park.

Concert at Walsh University

NORTH CANTON − The Walsh University Department of Visual and Performing Arts will present "All Earth is Hopeful: A Ceremony of Lessons and Carols" featuring the Walsh University Chorale and Handbell Choir at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Chapel at Walsh University, 2020 E. Maple St. Admission is free, and all are welcome.
