Pop-Up Sock Drive next week

ALLIANCE – United Way of Greater Stark County will host a Pop-Up Sock Drive from Feb. 6 through Feb. 8 at two locations in Alliance: Tanner Real Estate, 1965 Glamorgan St., and A Shirtery + More, 2213 W. State St.

New children’s socks and underwear can be dropped off at Tanner Real Estate from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and at A Shirtery + More from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The socks and underwear will be distributed to families in need in the Alliance area. For more information about this Pop-Up Sock Drive, contact Lydia Carmany, manager of donor relations, at Lydia.carmany@uwstark.org.

Library plans programs

CANAL FULTON – The Canal Fulton Public Library, 154 E. Market St., has scheduled the following programs. Registration is required in advance; call 330-854-4148 or stop by the Information Desk.

  • 6 p.m. Wednesday − Through the Eyes of the Artist: Auguste Rodin: Art historian and lecturer Felicia Zavarella Stadelman will share the tragic love story of artist Auguste Rodin.

  • 6 p.m. Thursday − Fun Tech for Kids: Explore some of the library's new, kid-friendly technology. For grades K-5.

  • 10 a.m. Saturday − Tea with The Royals: Join the royals of Canal Fulton as the Olde Canal Days queen and court have morning tea. Create your own crown, get a picture with the queen, and make Valentine's Day cards. For ages 3-12.

  • 6 p.m. Feb. 6 – Cricut: Iron-on Bags: Learn how to create a personalized tote bag using Cricut Design Space along with the library’s Cricut and Cricut Press. All materials will be provided by the library.

Nominations sought for DeHoff Emerging Philanthropists Award

CANTON − The deadline to submit nominations for the United Way of Greater Stark County’s 2022 DeHoff Emerging Philanthropists Award is 5 p.m. Feb. 6. The award recognizes residents who demonstrate the highest level of dedication and service to the community.

The DeHoff Emerging Philanthropists Award has recognized a community resident 45 or younger who takes personal action to impact the community through direct service and volunteer work. The recipient receives $5,000 to be donated to a health and human services nonprofit of the award recipient’s choice.

The award honors two of United Way’s most dedicated campaign volunteers, Bob and Linda DeHoff, who have been involved in numerous fundraising initiatives benefiting Stark County residents. The couple received a Gold Key Service Award in 2006 and The Association of Fundraising Professionals’ Outstanding Philanthropist Northeast Ohio 2017 Award.

Those who receive the DeHoff award will be presented with their awards at the United Way’s Annual Celebration on April 6. For more information on the awards, visit uwstark.org/service-awards.

Award-Nominated Film Series at Palace Theatre

CANTON – The Canton Palace Theatre, 605 Market Ave. N, continues its presentation of the year’s top award-nominated films during the 2023 Award Nominated Film Series.

“Elvis” will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is $7, with tickets available at the door. The movie is rated PG-13.

YMCA of Central Stark County hires two executive directors

CANTON – The YMCA of Central Stark County recently announced the hiring two new executive directors:

  • Jason Shundry at the Meyers Lake YMCA. Shundry joins the Y with a diverse background in health care management, ranging from human resources to support services. He is a lifelong resident of Stark County, specifically in the Meyers Lake community. He officially began his role Jan. 16.

  • Jennifer George at the Eric Snow Family YMCA. George is joining the Y to lead the downtown location in mid-February. Most recently, she has worked in child and family ministry in downtown Canton. She has over 25 years of management experience. She is a lifelong resident of Stark County.

Canton Country Music dances Feb. 5, 12

CANTON − Canton Country Music's next dance will be Feb. 5 at the Polish American Club, 1605 Henry Ave. SW, with Kenny Eddy Band. On Feb. 12, Jim Davidson Band featuring Dianna McDowell will provide music. 

Admission is $3 at the door. The event is open to the public. Doors open at 1 p.m., and music is from 2 to 5 p.m. Food will be available, as well as a 50-50 drawing and lottery tree.

SMHA commissioner retiring

CANTON – Jeffrey McDaniels will retire from the Stark Metropolitan Housing Authority Board of Commissioners, effective Tuesday. He will have completed five consecutive terms as a commissioner, providing over 25 years of service to the agency.

Mayor Richard D. Watkins appointed McDaniels to the board on Dec. 31, 1996, with his commission being effective Feb. 1, 1997. McDaniels has been reappointed by Mayors William Healy II and Thomas Bernabei. He has shared his knowledge of finance and understanding of investment practices not only during his role as commissioner, but he also voluntarily served several years on a finance sub-committee for SMHA.

Sheriff’s Office accepting applications for Citizen’s Academy

CANTON – The Stark County Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for the 2023 Spring Citizen's Academy. The Citizen's Academy is held at least once per year and is designed to offer citizens an opportunity to learn about the role the Sheriff’s Office fulfills in the community.

The 12-week program begins Feb. 21.

Classes are held every Tuesday evening throughout the 12-week period, with each class offering an in-depth look at Sheriff’s Office functions. Most of the classes will be held at the Stark County Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Training Center at 143 First St. SE in Massillon. Class topics include firearms safety, crime lab tours, jail tours, K9 demos, an understanding of the judicial system, and community engagement initiatives.

To qualify, applicants must be at least 21 years old, have no felony convictions, submit to a background check, have a valid Ohio driver's license, and live or work in Stark County.

To apply, visit sheriff.starkcountyohio.gov, select Community Engagement, and then Citizen’s Academy. Download the application from there, get it notarized and then mail or drop it off to 4500 Atlantic Blvd. NE, Canton, Ohio 44705 by Feb. 14.

Amateur radio licensing class offered

MASSILLON − The Massillon Amateur Radio Club will offer instruction to achieve the entry-level FCC Amateur Radio License.

Classes will begin Feb. 8 and will continue for eight weeks. The class is open to all and will enable people to participate in many radio activities, including public service. For inquiries or to make reservations, call 330-705-8449 and leave your name and phone number.

Do the Mu at Massillon Museum on Saturday

MASSILLON − The Massillon Museum, 121 Lincoln Way E, will host instructor Ke'Aunte Harris on Saturday for an "I Am … About Me" Do the Mu.

Stop by the museum anytime between noon and 2 p.m. No reservations are required. All ages are welcome, and all supplies will be provided. Do the Mu is a free monthly drop-in, hands-on intergenerational outlet for creativity.

On a canvas, each participant will create a sun and on the sun's rays they will add words that describe who they are. Everyone will color their canvases, being as creative as they choose to be.

Harris is the executive director and founder of BeYoutiful Weirdo mentoring program, serving more than 100 girls in Stark County, and she runs a program called "Art & Conversation." She taught preschool for 15 years and now works in the Massillon City School District. Harris is the author of “A Positive Life Is a Happy Life: Motivation for You and Me” and the “One Girl One Woman One Goal: One Can Change the World in One Day” workbook.

Free CPR class Feb. 9

MASSILLON − The Stark County Sheriff’s Office will offer the American Heart Association’s Friends and Family CPR class from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Stark County Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Training Center, 143 First St. SE.

The course teaches the lifesaving skills of adult hands-only CPR, adult CPR with breaths, child CPR, adult and child AED use, infant CPR, and choking relief for adults, children and infants. The Massillon Fire Department will instruct the course. There is a 30-person limit.

The public can register for the free course by visiting the Stark County Sheriff’s Office website, clicking on Community Training, and following the prompts to select the course at the Stark County Sheriff’s Office Training Center.
