Music at Mount Union

ALLIANCE − The University of Mount Union Purple Raider Marching Band will perform during a Marching Band Showcase at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Brush Performance Hall, located in the Giese Center for the Performing Arts on the Mount Union campus.

The marching band, under the direction of Jeff Neitzke, will perform all its pregame and halftime music from the Mount Union football games this season. Musical pieces performed during the showcase are from a variety of artists, including Bob Marley, Harry Belafonte, Macklemore, The Backstreet Boys, Alice Cooper, Nirvana and Soundgarden.

Other upcoming performing arts events at Mount Union include:

  • Saturday: Solo Con Tutti will be held at 10:30 a.m. in the Choral Rehearsal Hall.

  • Nov. 21: The Jazz Ensemble will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. in Brush Performance Hall.

  • Nov. 28: The Clarinet Ensemble will perform at 5 p.m. in Campus Grounds of the Hoover Price Campus Center.

  • Nov. 29: The Dance Recital will be at 7:30 p.m. in Brush Performance Hall.

Crafters event Thursday

BEACH CITY − Crafters are invited to attend the Deck Your Halls event from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at Camp Buckeye, 10055 Camp Road NW.

Deck Your Halls is a modified drive-thru event this year. Pick your craft kits online and drive through and pick them up at the camp along with a carryout lunch. The greens projects, as well as a shutter project, will be held outside on the lodge porch. A display in the lodge will include many items you may sort through to make your own kits. Crafters will be available to help you sort and make a kit.

Proceeds benefit the summer camp ministry for area children who would not otherwise be able to attend a week of camp. Camp Buckeye retreat center is an inter-denominational nonprofit camp with hiking trails, pond, swimming pool, chapel, playground, winterized lodge, cabins and picnic pavilions.

Swiss steak dinner Saturday

BEACH CITY − Beach City American Legion Hall Post 549, 125 Third Ave. NE, is having its Swiss steak dinner on from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday or until the food runs out. Drive-thru carryout only. Watch for signs where to enter.

The meal also features three-bean salad, applesauce, mashed potatoes/homemade gravy, corn, bread and dessert for $12.

Applicants sought for Law Library Resources Board

CANTON − Stark County Common Pleas judges are seeking applicants to be considered for appointment to a term on the Stark County Law Library Resources Board. The Court of Common Pleas is responsible for appointing one member of the board. The appointment is for a five-year term beginning Jan. 1.

The Stark County Law Library provides legal services to local judges, attorneys, county and township officials, and citizens. It has been serving the legal community since 1889. The Stark County Law Library Resources Board meets at 1 p.m. on the second Thursday of February, April, June, August, October and December.

Applicants must be licensed to practice law in Ohio and in good standing before the Ohio Supreme Court. Those interested in being considered should submit a cover letter stating their reasons for interest in the position, along with a resume that includes the address of their residence and information regarding relevant experience and background. The deadline is Nov. 30. The information should be submitted to Dwaine Hemphill, 115 Central Plaza North, Suite 400, Canton, Ohio 44702.

Holly Pine Lane event this week

CANTON − Canton Garden Center’s 32nd annual Holly Pine Lane event will be Thursday through Nov. 20 at the Canton Garden Center, 1615 Stadium Park Drive NW. The event is free and open to the public. Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Nov. 20.

There will be more than 20 Christmas trees decorated by garden clubs, a children’s scavenger hunt, live demonstrations and a bazaar.

A special event on beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday will include a children’s choir, Santa’s arrival at 6:20, cookies and hot chocolate, and the lighting of the park’s holiday display. Parking will be available at the Fulton Road Hall of Fame parking lot with a SARTA shuttle available from 5 to 8 p.m.

Santa also will visit on Saturday and Sunday from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. There will be a special free "Kid’s Day” Event from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday. Children ages 3 to 8 get a treat and craft visit with Santa.

MajesticVoice Chorus will perform at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

Jackson Township Historical Society sets events

JACKSON TWP. − The Jackson Township Historical Society, 7756 Fulton Drive NW, has scheduled several programs at the schoolhouse located next to Jackson High School:

  • Nov. 20, 1-3 p.m.: McGuffey Kids Club Program for children grades K-6 will include information on Native Americans, games, crafts and stories. To ensure enough supplies, registration is requested to McGuffeyJTHS@gmail.com.

  • Nov. 27, 2 p.m.: Author Michael Van Ness will discuss his book, "General in Command," about the life of his grandfather, Major Gen. John B. Anderson, who went from a farm in Iowa to command one of the largest combat corps in World War II.

  • Dec. 4, 1-4 p.m.: Holiday Open House will include live music, cookies and hot chocolate, crafts and games. The display is from a private collection of ornaments from the White House and Secret Service.

Workshop on invasive species is Thursday

MASSILLON – The Stark Soil & Water Conservation District will host "The Time is Now: Invasive Species Control Workshop" from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The program will be available in-person and online via zoom.

Fall and winter offer an exceptional opportunity to manage invasive plant species. The workshop will offer information on what invasive plant species are, their impact on ecosystems, how to identify them, different techniques for control, ways to manage your property, how to develop a management strategy, and how to be successful in eradicating your property of these ecological threats.

Winter Wonderland Open House at library Saturday

MASSILLON – Massillon Public Library, 208 Lincoln Way E, will present a Winter Wonderland Open House from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Saturday. Every room in the Main Library will become a part of Santa's "North Pole Workshop" this year.

Children can mail a letter to Santa, visit with Mrs. Claus and get a photo with her, decorate cookies in the North Pole Cafe, do crafts, play games and learn how to be an elf. Julie Dewald and Franklin Elementary's 16th Street Singers will perform in the auditorium from 1 to 2 p.m.

Program on birds Wednesday

PERRY TWP. − Chris Dyer, an avid birder and member of Canton Audubon Society, will present the club's monthly program at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Exploration Gateway at Sippo Lake Park, 5712 12th St. NW.

CPR class Saturday

PLAIN TWP. − The Stark County Sheriff’s Office invites the public to attend the American Heart Association’s Friends and Family CPR class from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Plain Township Hall, 2600 Easton St. NE.

There is a 30-person limit to this course.

Photo Club program on owls Saturday

SUGAR CREEK TWP. – The Wilderness Center Nature Photo Club will have a free program on "The Wonderful World of Ohio Owls" at its meeting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at The Wilderness Center, 9877 Alabama Ave SW.

Judy Semroc, an area field biologist and naturalist who has spent over 20 years working in the Natural Areas Division as a conservation specialist with the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, will present the program.
