Boy Scouts plan spaghetti dinner

BEACH CITY − Beach City Scout Troop 301 will have its annual all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the American Legion Post 549, 125 Third Ave. NE.

The meal cost for adults (older than 11) is $10, youth (ages 5 to 10) is $5, and children younger than 5 eat free. Scout popcorn will be for sale.

Apply for open enrollment in Northwest Local

CANAL FULTON − The Northwest Local School District will remain an open enrollment school district permitting enrollment statewide for the 2024-25 school year, according to a news release.

Applications to register must be submitted to the superintendent’s office, 2309 Locust St. S, by April 30. Applications will not be accepted after the deadline. Call 330-854-2291 with questions.

Free TIPS server training is March 8

CANTON − The Stark County Sheriff’s Office, Stark County Safe Communities, Esber Beverage, and Drug Free Stark County are collaborating to offer TIPS server training free to local businesses that sell or serve alcohol.

The training will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 8 at the Sheriff’s Office, 4500 Atlantic Blvd. NE.

TIPS trains servers, sellers and consumers of alcohol how to prevent intoxication, drunken driving and underage drinking. This training may help protect businesses from DUI/OVI liability, help lower business insurance premiums, and help prevent liquor sales to minors. Training staff to recognize the signs of intoxication can reduce the chance that an alcohol-related incident will occur, authorities said.

Refreshments will be provided. Participants must be present for the full three-hour session. Space is limited, and reservations are required. Contact Laura Miller at 330-430-3835 or by email at 207@starksheriff.org to register. Provide the names of all employees who will attend.

Abortion-loss support group for men meets Wednesday

CANTON – Arrows, an abortion-loss support group for men, will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The informal, drop-in group meets at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month. 'Poor Things’ at the Palace this week

CANTON − The Palace Theatre, 605 Market Ave. N, will show the award-nominated film “Poor Things” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Feb. 18.

Admission is $7 at the door. Doors open a half an hour before showtime.

CANTON − The Stark Library DeHoff Memorial Branch, 216 Hartford Ave. SE, will host a “Crafting Your Estate Roadmap” workshop from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday.

CANTON − The Community Building Partnership of Stark County will offer a homebuyer workshop from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Feb. 21 at its office at 400 Market Ave. N.

A Realtor from Keller Williams Legacy Group Realty will talk about the homebuying process. Learn about the steps to your first purchase from obtaining mortgage pre-approval to selecting the perfect real estate agent, and the requirements to apply for the city of Canton Down Payment Assistance Program.

Walsh University offers free mental health symposium

NORTH CANTON – Walsh University’s School of Behavioral Health Sciences is hosting a free mental health symposium for mental health professionals, community partners, and Walsh faculty, staff, coaches and students that addresses issues such as COVID-19 anxiety, depression and social media pressures affecting young people.

The free event will be held from 7:30 a.m. to noon Feb. 23 in the Barrette Business and Community Center and provides four contact hours with a certificate of attendance.

Night hike, stargazing at the Wilderness Center

SUGAR CREEK TWP. – The Wilderness Center, 9877 Alabama Ave. SW, will hold a night hike from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday. Coyote mating season is at its peak in mid-February and hikers will explore the trails listening for the yips and howls of this animal at its most active time of year.  Following the hike, observe the skies through telescopes in the observatory. If the sky is cloudy, participants will explore the same night sky in the Wilderness Center planetarium instead of using telescopes.  Bring your red-light flashlight — white lights are not allowed on the trails at night. The Wilderness Center can make a flashlight red for you. Hiking boots and weather appropriate attire are recommended. Registration is required for all attendees 5 and older. Comedy fundraiser to help children and teens in Stark

YOUNGSTOWN − Ha Ha Gala, a comedy fundraiser, will benefit Cadence Care Network and the work it does in Stark, Ashtabula, Wyandot, and Lucas counties and throughout the Mahoning Valley. The event will be Feb. 24 at Penguin City Brewery, 460 E. Federal St.

The show will feature comedians Jason Lawhead, Bill Squire and John Armstrong. Tickets are $55 and include heavy appetizers. Penguin City will provide a cash bar. The American Red Cross has scheduled Stark County blood drives this week from 1 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Church of Christ, 1301 E. Maple St., North Canton; and noon to 5 p.m. Friday at the Northwest Senior Center, 853 Locust St. S, Canal Fulton.
