Bird program at Canton Garden Center

CANTON – A free family program, Ohio Tweets, will be held at the Canton Garden Center, 1615 Stadium Park Dr. NW, at 6 pm. Wednesday. Join bird expert Marlene Bolea for a fun, interactive class about birds in Ohio.

Palace Theatre to show ‘King Richard’

CANTON – The Canton Palace Theatre will show the movie “King Richard” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 2 p.m. Jan. 23 as part of its 2022 Award-Nominated Film Series. The movie about how tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams became who they are after coaching from their father, Richard Williams, is rated PG-13.

Admission is $7. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and at 1 p.m. Jan. 22.

Virtual trivia event Friday

CANTON – The McKinley Presidential Library and Museum will host a virtual trivia event from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday via Zoom consisting of three rounds of trivia lasting about 20 minutes each. It will be played using an online platform called Kahoot. Test your knowledge of McKinley Museum trivia, Ohio trivia and presidential trivia. Each participant will be entered to win prizes after each round. Winners will be selected randomly. Participants must be older than 18 to be eligible to win prizes.

Comedian at the Palace on Saturday

CANTON – Comedian Rodney Carrington will present his “Let Me In” show 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Canton Palace Theatre. Doors open at 6 p.m. The show is for ages 14 and older only.

Museum open on MLK Jr. Day

CANTON – The McKinley Presidential Library & Museum will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday. These special open hours are in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

In addition to being open, the museum will have a talk at 10 a.m. from Education Director Ally Carlson about presidential pets at the White House. Out of 45 U.S. presidents, all but three have had pets. This program is free with admission.

Reporter to speak at Dover Library

DOVER – Times-Reporter staff writer Nancy Molnar will speak at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the Community Room at the Dover Library, 525 N. Walnut St. She will show images and share interesting details about some of her favorite local stories.

A native of Independence, Molnar received a bachelor's degree in journalism from Temple University in Philadelphia. Before coming to Tuscarawas County to write for the Times-Reporter, Molnar worked for the Akron Beacon Journal, the Canton Repository, Wooster Daily Record, Rittman Press, and weekly newspapers in Brunswick, Medina and Strongsville. At The Times-Reporter, she covers crime, courts and local government and writes feature stories. She also takes photos and videos and helps manage the newspaper's online and social media presences.

Rubik’s Cube competition Thursday

DOVER – The Dover Public Library will hold a Rubik’s Cube competition at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the community room. In December, Andy Basnett taught several sequences of moves that can help solve the cube. Basnett challenged participants to hone their skills over the holidays. Now it is time to show off those skills at the competition. Everyone is welcome.

Writer’s conference is Saturday

DOVER – The Dark Sire magazine will host a one-day writing conference called The Creative Quill from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday in the community room at the Dover Library. The workshop is free and open to fiction writers ages 15 to adult.

The Dark Sire is a quarterly literary magazine that prints short fiction, poetry and art in the subgenres of Gothic, Horror, Fantasy and Psychological Realism. According to Bre Stephens, founder of the magazine and organizer of the conference, writers can participate in workshops throughout the afternoon. Stephens will offer exercises that sharpen such skills as world building, dialogue, and characterization. She will also discuss the professional tools needed to get works published (query letters, synopses, formatting).

Other published authors will discuss publishing industry trends, writer’s block, and how to get published. Representatives from Ohio Writers Association, Ohio Fiction Writers, and Ohio Horror Writers Association will introduce these groups to participants as a way to network with fellow authors. Krista Canterbury Adams & S.M. Cook will discuss styles of poetry and how to submit their poems for publication in Ascension Poetry Magazine. Stephens, an agent for Jennifer DeChiara Literary Agency, will do first-page critiques and hear pitches from writers attending the conference.

Dover Library launches Teen Tuesdays

DOVER – Dover Public Library’s new year of Teen Tuesdays begins this Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the library’s Community Room. Each week, local teens in grades 6-12 are invited to the library for events created for teens, by teens, with a little help from the library. Registration is not required. Light refreshments will be served. Masks are required based on current CDC recommendations. Interested patrons can call the library at 330-343-6123 for more information.

This year’s Teen Tuesdays are predominantly based on requests and ideas from teen participants at previous teen events, starting with Music Day this Tuesday. Teens are invited to bring their own music instruments and show off their musical talents at this jam session in the library’s basement.

Hartville Antique Show is Saturday

HARTVILLE – The Hartville Antique Show will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Hartville Marketplace and Flea Market, 1289 Edison St. NW. The event will showcase local vendors with vintage, antique and unique items. It will be in the food court area with antique vendors selling items such as primitives, vintage toys, advertising and more.

Askren Book Club to meet Tuesday

NAVARRE – Massillon Public Library's Barry Askren Branch, 1200 Market St. NE, will host the Askren Book Club at from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday. The book club meets on the third Tuesday of each month. Participation is free, and no registration is necessary.

Library event on stress, anxiety

MASSILLON – The Massillon Public Library will host “Dealing with Stress and Anxiety” from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday in the library auditorium. Guest presenter registered nurse Amy Foltz of Community Hospice will explain ways to help us cope better.

You may bring a lunch to enjoy during the talk. The Massillon Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will provide dessert. No registration is necessary. This program is free and open to the public.

Craft session for teens on Wednesday

MASSILLON – The Massillon Public Library will hold a “Crafternoon” from 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday in the library auditorium. The program is free and open to those in grades 7 through 12. Attendees will make a zipper pouch for pencils, tablets, makeup and more.

Family Movie Night at library Tuesday

MASSILLON – The Massillon Public Library holds a Family Movie Night at 5:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month in the library auditorium. Doors open at 5:15 p.m. Children younger than 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Admission is free, and free popcorn will be available.

StoryWalk starts Monday

MASSILLON – Families are invited to stop by the StoryWalk outside the Massillon Public Library, 208 Lincoln Way E, to read “If You Give a Pig a Party,” by Laura Numeroff anytime from Monday through Jan. 29. Begin the walk in the Camille Leslie Memorial Garden on Lincoln Way East and read your way to the Second Street entrance to the library. You may pick up a take-home craft at the end of the walk.

Museum hosts JFS art event

MASSILLON – The Massillon Museum is hosting the Stark County Job and Family Services Heart Gallery through Feb. 13 in its lower-level lobby. The exhibition is intended to bring attention to more than 120,000 children in the U.S. waiting to be adopted from the foster care system.

The Heart Gallery pairs a local artist with a child waiting to be adopted, so the artist can create a unique portrait to be displayed along with information about each child and artist. The Heart Gallery includes artwork by Christine Benner, Heather Bullach, Tim Carmany, Kat Francis, Aaron Hill and Judi Krew.

Reception for artist Saturday

MASSILLON – An exhibition reception for artist Susan Byrnes will be 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Massillon Museum. Her most recent works from the Viscosity Series are vividly colored “sculptural drawings” inspired by landscape that are made from transparent and opaque polyurethane, cast into a shallow mold. The exhibit continues through Jan. 26.

Cat, kitten adoption event Saturday

NORTH CANTON – The North Canton Public Library, 185 N. Main St., will host a cat and kitten adoption event by Cats Cradle of Stark County from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The event is scheduled every other Saturday.

Canton Audubon Society to meet, show video of concert

PERRY TWP. – The meeting of the Canton Audubon Society at 7 p.m. Wednesday will be virtual. It will explore the connection between bird flight and musical motion as a video of a concert performed by the New Bedford (Mass.) Symphony Orchestra will be shown.

The video includes interviews with Xavi Bou, photographer for the Ornithographies Project; David Lentink from Stanford University’s bird flight and robotics lab, and Conservation Education Specialist Sam Claggett from Buttonwood Park Zoo in New Bedford, Mass.

January’s program is designed to familiarize Audubon members and local teachers with the video, which is available at no charge to area schools by the Canton Audubon Society, with a free online curriculum available for use by elementary school teachers. The organization also offers a “Birding is for Everyone,” PowerPoint program for area organizations, schools, or others needing programs of general interest. Make Valentine’s cards Thursday

PERRY TWP. – Aimee Sauls from Muddy Lane Studios will guide students in creating handmade Valentine’s cards from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Sippo Lake Park’s Exploration Gateway.
