Alliance Symphony, Hey Mavis in concert Feb. 19

ALLIANCE – The Northeast Ohio-based Americana band Hey Mavis will join the Alliance Symphony Orchestra at 3 p.m. Feb. 19 for a concert in the University of Mount Union’s Brush Performance Hall of the Giese Center for the Performing Arts.

The event will feature original songs from the band's Silver Ribbon Dream album, with orchestrations by director Eric Benjamin. The songs celebrate the stories, history and legacy of the Ohio & Erie Canal. The concert will also include pieces featuring the Alliance Symphony celebrating streams, rivers and canals and their significance.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors/veterans and free for all students. Student and child tickets must be ordered by phone or in person. Tickets are available online at mountunion.edu/boxoffice or through the Mount Union Box Office at 330- 821-2565. The box office is open 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday when classes are in session and for ticket sales one hour before the performance.

Trivia competition for teens is Thursday

ALLIANCE − Rodman Public Library, 215 E. Broadway St., will host a trivia competition for teens ages 12-18 from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday. Teams of three or four will answer random questions based on the format of popular game shows such as "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy!"

The teams will also be scored on a scavenger hunt to find things around the library. The team with the top combined score at the end of the contest will receive a prize. Registration is required; visit rodmanlibrary.evanced.info/signup. For more information, call 330-821-2665, ext. 217.

Anime, book discussion, cartoons and crafts at library

CANAL FULTON − The Canal Fulton Public Library, 154 E. Market St., has announced the following programs:

  • 6 p.m. Feb. 21, Third Tuesday Book Discussion: The group will discuss "A Gentleman in Moscow" by Amor Towles. Copies of the book are available in advance at the circulation desk.

Presentation on African American genealogy Saturday

CANTON – The African American Genealogical Society will present African American Genealogy: Journey to the Past from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the lower-level meeting room of the Stark County District Library’s North Branch, 189 25th St. NW.

Deborah Abbott from the African American Genealogical Society of Cleveland will speak about experiences, resources, and how to overcome obstacles in tracing African American ancestries. Stark County Hunger Task Force seeks works for art auction

CANTON – The Stark County Hunger Task Force is looking for local professional artists to participate in its annual art auction fundraiser, Palette 2 Palate.

The event, to be held April 29 at the Zimmermann Symphony Center, 2331 17th St. NW, will feature artwork donations of all mediums to be auctioned to attendees. Proceeds will support the organization's local hunger-fighting efforts.

Artists interested should submit a photo of their art upon inquiry. Artist submissions should be sent to Stephanie Sweany at stephanie@starkhunger.org by March 1. A staff member will review the submission and contact the artist with further information.

All participating artists will have their name and work promoted on the organization's social media accounts, website, and other marketing materials. Artists will receive a free ticket to the event. For more information, call 330-455-6667 or visit starkhunger.org.

Stark County NAACP installs officers

CANTON – The Stark County NAACP installed officers recently in a ceremony at the Ken Weber Goodwill Campus, 408 Ninth St. SW.

Zion Temple Church of God Associate Pastor Andrea Ramsey administered the oath. Those installed were Hector McDaniel, president; Viola Fisher, secretary; Homaunore Pender, first vice president; Style Marshall, third vice president; Gaylon Brooks, executive committee member; and Phillip Brooks, executive committee member.

Author and marine scientist to speak Thursday

CANTON – Author and marine scientist Danielle "Danni" Washington will speak at the Palace Theatre, 605 Market Ave. N, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday as part of the Stark County District Library’s Dr. Audrey Lavin Speaking of Books Author Series. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

The first African American woman to host her own science television series, Washington is in production as the host of a National Geographic/Disney+ documentary series and is working on a special for Discovery's Shark Week. She is a host on The Genius Generation, a new podcast focused on young people behind an invention, entrepreneurial pursuit, or discovery using science.

She graduated from the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric with a marine science/ biology degree. She co-founded Big Blue & You, a nonprofit dedicated to inspiring and educating youth about marine science education through the arts and media.

Her new book for children 8 to 12, “Bold Women in Science,” tells the stories of 15 women who changed the course of science.

Holly Davies leads Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health’s Annual Appeal

CANTON­ – Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health board member Holly Davies is the chairwoman for the agency’s 2023 Annual Appeal, running Feb. 6 to 28.

Davies, an attorney at the law firm Pitinii, Davies and Cazantzes, is a C&A board member and sits on the board’s Mission Advancement Committee. She was past chair of the agency’s annual fundraiser Let Your Light Shine. She also participates on the Aultman Women’s Board and Jackson Local Schools Foundation.

Poetry performances Saturday

MASSILLON − The Massillon Museum is serving as the Northeast Ohio regional partner for Poetry Out Loud, a partnership of the National Endowment for the Arts, Poetry Foundation, and state and jurisdictional arts agencies.

Student champions from area high schools will perform poetry from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday in the regional semifinals in the museum’s Gessner Hall. The public is invited to register for free at MassMu.org/Tickets.

Winners of the regional semifinals will go on to compete March 10 at the state level in Columbus. The national competition will be held in Washington, D.C., in May. Cash prizes are awarded to winners and their schools at the state and national levels. The 18 counties represented in the Northeast Ohio region are: Ashland, Ashtabula, Columbiana, Cuyahoga, Erie, Geauga, Huron, Lake, Lorain, Mahoning, Medina, Portage, Richland, Stark, Summit, Trumbull, Tuscarawas, and Wayne.   • Love the Stars, 6:30 p.m. Feb. 19 and 28 at Fry Family Park, 2533 Farber St. SE, Pike Township. Join a park naturalist to discuss light pollution. Participants will use smartphones to identify stars and learn how to track light pollution. Dress appropriately for the weather and bring a smartphone. These programs will be canceled if the sky is cloudy.
