Stark Public Royal Knights win third straight regional Special Olympics basketball title

The Stark Public Royal Knights won their third straight Division 3 NEO Regional Special Olympics basketball title last weekend at the College of Wooster. The Royal Knights defeated the Geauga Blue Streaks 58-40 in the championship game after a 65-38 win over Coshocton Hopewell in the regional semifinals.

The Royal Knights started the weekend Saturday by taking a 24-2 lead on Coshocton Hopewell and never looked back. Cory Amatangelo led the way with 20 points, while Max Broom scored 16 and Michael Soehnlen added 10. Jacob Levign and Colton Moody each scored 10 points for Coshocton.

In Sunday’s regional final, the Royal Knights again had three players score double figures. Broom's 14 points led the way followed by Soehnlen's 11 and Amatangelo's 10. Trevor Pishco of Geauga scored 22.

The Special Olympics Ohio state basketball finals are March 3-5, in Bowling Green. The Royal Knights (9-3) play at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 4, at the Stroh Center in a state semifinal.
