Stars of the Day: Clean sweep for Diman hoop teams; Stang girls improve to 8-3

TAUNTON — When it comes to league games, the Diman boys basketball team is zoned in.

That was the case Thursday against Bristol-Plymouth.

The Bengals improve to 3-1 in the Mayflower Athletic Conference after winning a tough game on the road against the Craftsmen, 58-45, at Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical High school.

The win was the second in a row for Diman (3-8).

Ezra Cote led the way with a team-high 21 points. Jacob Furtado and Colby Tetrault each finished with 12 points.

Somerset Berkley 62, Joseph Case 43

The Raiders won a league contest on the road against Joseph Case.

Ethan Dias led SB (7-4; 5-2 in the South Coast Conference) with a team-high 22 points and 17 rebounds.

Mason Medeiros finished with 14 points, including four three-pointers.

Hayden Cayton and Landon Cayton each finished with 14 points for the Cardinals (1-9).

The Raiders host Durfee on Friday while Case travels to Dighton-Rehoboth on Monday.

HIGH SCHOOL: Who is The Herald News High School Player of the Week for Jan. 17-23

Bishop Stang 49, Seekonk 46

The Spartans defeated non-league opponent Seekonk at home.

Freshman Sage Baptiste had a huge game for Stang with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Senior Luis Vega Jr. chipped in with 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Senior Jacob Seiders added nine points in the win.

Senior Greg Morales provided big minutes off the bench.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Diman 66, Bristol-Plymouth 43

The Lady Bengals remain unbeaten in league play after beating Bristol-Plymouth at home.

Hannah Martin led Diman (6-5; 4-0 in Mayflower Athletic Conference) with a team-high 17 points.

Emma Mederios chipped in with 15 points and Avery Rounds finished in double figures with 11.

Alexis Alves and Elizabeth Kinnane each scored seven and six points, respectively.

The Lady Spartans easily defeated league opponent Fontbonne.

Bridget Markey led Stang (8-3; 4-1 in CCL South) with a team-high 18 points.

Other players who hit the scoring column were Kate Carreau (seven), Sophie Caldwell (six), Eleanor Senna (four and 14 rebounds), Leah Katz (two) and Ali James (two).

Defensively, Carreau held Ducks' top scorer Colleen Fogarty scoreless.

The Spartans host Cathedral on Tuesday.

Silver Lake 45, Joseph Case 34

The Lady Cardinals lost to non-league opponent Silver Lake in a makeup game.

Liberty Gazaille paved the way for Case (7-4) with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Abigail Sirois added eight points and 14 rebounds.

Bourne 37, Westport 34

The Lady Wildcats dropped a close matchup at home against non-league opponent Bourne.

Leah Sylvain led Westport (5-6) with a team-high 14 points, three steals, three assists and a rebound. Lily Pichette finished with six points, 10 rebounds and three steals.

Other point scorers include Abbey Silvia (six), Zoey Sylvain (five), Korynne Holden (three) and Alora DaFonseca (two).

BOYS SWIMMING

New Bedford 97, Durfee 76

The Hilltoppers dropped a league meet at home with New Bedford.

Benjamin Hankerson was the only double winner for Durfee (3-5), placing first in the 50 free and 100 breaststroke.

Other individual winners include Michael Harrington (200 free; 2:18.33) and Yasin Mahmoud (500 free; 6:30.97). Cooper Long, Jack Fitzgerald, and Forrest Malo also had strong performances.

GIRLS SWIMMING

New Bedford 97, Durfee 78

The Lady Hilltoppers lost a league meet at home against New Bedford.

The Durfee trio of Rachael Silva (225.45), Madison Ferreira (179.30), and Casey Carvalho (169.55) swept the diving event while Reghan Gibney had a strong showing in exhibition scoring a personal-best score of 148.70.

Abby Long, Aimee Tiebout, and Emma McDonnell were the lone individual winners, placing first in each the 200 free, 500 free, and 100 breaststroke, respectively.

Melani Maldonado, Leah Rodriguez, Abby Saunders and Bruna Lobo all had great races.
