Stars of the Day: Connolly wins big on MLK Day; Somerset Berkley hockey beats Taunton

FALL RIVER — It's been a tough start to the winter season for the Bishop Connolly boys basketball team.

They had to navigate a tough pandemic surge and scamble around for practices.

However, things finally came together for the Cougars on Monday.

Connolly recorded its first win of the season, beating neighboring Diman 81-53 at Bishop Connolly High school on Martin Luther King Day.

Freshman Alex Kyrnicki led the way for the Cougars (1-1) with a game-high 23 points.

Eighth-grader Jahmier Stephenson had 14 points and freshman Brendan King chipped in for 13. Junior Brandon Defaria (12 points) and senior Mason Humphrey (11 points) also finished in double figures.

Connolly led at halftime, 52-26.

The Cougars face Holbrook on Wednesday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Bourne 58, Diman 37

The Lady Bengals lost to a tough Bourne team.

Avery Rounds led Diman (3-5) with a team-high 10 points. Emma Mederios finished with nine points and Hannah Martin contributed seven points.

The Bengals face Southeastern on Friday.

HOCKEY

Somerset Berkley 4, Taunton 1

The Raiders remain unbeaten on the season Monday after beating non-league opponent Taunton.

Davis Sullivan and Noah Taylor each had a goal and assist for SB (6-0). Other goal scorers were Brayden Pimental and Dylan Messier.

Luke Gauvin and Liam Desrocher each contributed an assist. Brandon Silva made 24 saves in net.
