Stars of the Day: Durfee hoop teams win Elsbree St. battle; Westport girls hoop stuns Case

FALL RIVER — For the three seasons prior to the arrival of first-year head coach Jeff Caron, the Durfee girls basketball team notched six wins in 50 games.

On Monday, the Lady Hilltoppers equaled that mark in one season.

Durfee led from start to finish en route to a 73-34 home win over visiting Bishop Connolly at B.M.C Durfee High School.

Senior Mackenzie Carreiro led the Hilltoppers (6-3) with 20 points. Jada Holley added 12 points and Lauren Kuchar finished with nine points.

Maggie O’Connell chipped in with eight points in the win.

Maggie Pabst led Connolly (3-2) with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Abby Sousa chipped in with 12 points and four rebounds.

Westport 51, Joseph Case 50

The Lady Wildcats stunned visiting Joseph Case in a close game at home.

Korynne Holden paved the way for Westport (4-5) with a game-high 19 points. She also contributed two steals and two assists.

Leah Sylvain had 15 points, three steals, an assist and five rebounds. Lily Pichette finished with 13 points, seven steals, 17 rebounds and three blocks.

Abigail Sirois led the Cardinals (7-3) with a team-high 17 points. Brooke Orton added 16 points.

Diman 59, Old Colony 28

The Lady Bengals defeated Old Colony at home.

Avery Rounds recorded a season-high 27 points for Diman (5-5).

Jenna Mederios chipped in with eight points and Elizabeth Kinnane had seven points.

Alexis Alves also hit the scoring column with six points.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Durfee 95, Bishop Connolly 52

The Hilltoppers led from start to finish in their game against Connolly.

Jevon Holley scored a game-high 34 points in the win for Durfee (7-1; 3-0 in SEC).

Colin Hargraves had 16 points and Omar Velez finished with 12 points. Jaleale Simmons chipped in with nine points.

Alex Krynicki recorded a team-high 18 points for the Cougars (3-2; 2-0 in MAC). Jah Stephenson ended in double figures with 11 points.

HOCKEY

South Shore Tech. 7, Diman 6, OT

The Bengals dropped a tough game in overtime to South Shore on Senior Day Saturday.

Jacob Almeida netted a hat trick for Diman (2-6; 0-5 in Mayflower Athletic Conference).

Other goal scorers were Ethan Laforce (two assists), Evan Barbosa and Connor Faria. Bryce Medeiros also chipped in with an assist.

The Bengals honored seniors Ethan Carreiro, Caleb Aguiar, Colby Pimental, Peter Moniz, Connor Faria, Quinn Dutra and LaForce.
