STARS OF THE DAY: Athletes from Rogers, Portsmouth shine at Classical Classic track meet

Saturday's stars

Morgan Casey and Kitty Damon Portsmouth girls track

Casey won the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 6 inches to qualify for the national championship meets on Saturday during the Classical Classic in Providence. Damon was runner-up in the 400 meters with a time of 1 minute, 1.91 seconds and also combined with Marin Goodfriend, Allie Kaull and Addison Mau to win the 4x800 relay (10:24.89).

Kaden Kluth and Jeff Brady, Portsmouth boys track

Kluth topped the 800 meters with a time of 1 minute, 56.3 seconds and another school record in the 1,500 (3:56.95) and on Saturday at the Classical Classic in Providence. The senior joined Jeff Brady, Tom McGraw and Aiden Chen to win the 4x400 relay (3:35.65). Brady also was runner-up in the 400 with a time of 51.38 seconds.

Luis Betancourt and Darian Griffin, Rogers boys track

Betancourt was runner-up in the 300 intermediate hurdles with a time of 42.55 seconds and placed fifth in the 110 high hurdles (16.24), while Griffin second in the 200 dash (23.32) at Saturday’s Classical Classic.

Katelyn Serth, Rogers girls track

Serth was the top individual finisher Saturday at the Classical Classic, where she placed sixth in the pole vault by clearing 8 feet.

Kaitlin Roche, Portsmouth girls lacrosse

Roche scored four goals and assisted on one, won numerous draws and dropped back and played excellent defense as unbeaten host Portsmouth defeated previously undefeated Burrillville 13-2 on Saturday.

Patrick Stahl, Rogers boys lacrosse

Stahl notched a season-high 17 saves and the defense kept the game close for three quarters, but host Burrillville scored five unanswered goals in the fourth as it defeated the Vikings 9-4 on Saturday.

Luc Lavigueur and Oliver Rey, Rogers baseball

It wasn’t the best day for the Vikings, who dropped a 10-0 decision to host Chariho in five innings Saturday. Lavigueur and Rey provided the highlights with a hit apiece against the Chargers.

Friday's stars

Jack Cianciolo and Marcus Evans, Portsmouth boys lacrosse

Cianciolo netted seven goals and assisted on four, and Evans scored five goals and assisted on five as the host Patriots finally avenged their 2019 Division II title game loss to South Kingstown with a 17-4 triumph over the Rebels in a Division I match Friday night.

John Mass and Chris Chagnon Portsmouth baseball

Mass threw a complete-game, two-hit shutout and struck out 11 and Chagnon singled home Shane Harvey with the game’s lone run as the Patriots edged Mount Hope 1-0 on Friday in Bristol.

Ben Pacheco, Tiverton tennis

The No. 2 singles player earned a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 win and two other Tiverton solo players won their matches, but unbeaten host Smithfield swept the doubles matches as it earned a 4-3 win in a match that lasted over three hours.

“Ben Pacheco played his best match of the season in a come-from-behind, three-set win,” Tiverton coach Bill Phillips said.

Thursday's stars

Ginnie Hamilton, Middletown girls lacrosse

The center midfielder dominated on draw controls, scored four goals and assisted on three others as Middletown broke through for its first Division I victory of the season, a 13-4 triumph over Cumberland at Gaudet Middle School on Thursday.

Grace Plourde, Tiverton softball

Plourde cracked a double and knocked in both Tiverton runs as the Tigers fell to host Exeter-West Greenwich 8-2 on Thursday.

Evan LeVasseur and Scott Cooper, Middletown baseball

LeVasseur stroked a triple and scored the Islanders' lone run, and Cooper pitched five innings in relief, allowed two earned runs and struck out three as host Middletown bowed to Central 9-1 on Thursday.

Ethan Arruda and Ali Chamseddine Tiverton boys lacrosse

Goalie Arruda made 13 saves and defender Chamseddine caused numerous Smithfield turnovers as they helped keep host Tiverton in the game, but the Tigers had problems putting the ball in the net as they fell to the unbeaten Sentinels 3-1 on Thursday.

Wednesday's stars

Dylan Walker and David Rivera, Rogers boys lacrosse

Walker led the offense with five goals and an assist, and Rivera consistently won faceoffs and scooped up ground balls at midfield as host Rogers defeated Wheeler 7-2 for its first victory of the season.

Digby Alexander and Max Nasser, Middletown golf

Alexander led the Islanders by shooting a 47 and Nasser was two strokes behind as Middletown fell to Barrington 164-203 on Wednesday at Rhode Island Country Club.

Liam Parker, Portsmouth tennis

Parker scored a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles and the visiting Patriots swept the doubles — including two wins via forfeit — as they edged Westerly 4-3 on Wednesday for their second Division II win of the season.

Jason Potvin, Tiverton baseball

Potvin was the tough-luck losing pitcher at Westerly on Wednesday when he hurled a complete game and struck out nine while contributing a double and a single at the plate for the Tigers, who fell to the unbeaten Bulldogs 3-2.

Angelina Ponte and Victoria Ramos, Rogers girls lacrosse

Ponte scored the Vikings' goals and goalie Ramos made 10 saves in a 15-2 setback against Toll Gate on Wednesday in Warwick.

Jack Cianciolo and Dan Shea, Portsmouth boys lacrosse

The two seniors came through Wednesday in a nonleague, 8-7 win over Mount St. Charles as Cianciolo scored three goals and assisted on three others and goalie Shea stopped 16 shots for the host Patriots.

Luke Del Deo and Aaron DeGala, Tiverton tennis

Del Deo and DeGala both used good ground stroke play while Del Deo also was impressive at the net in his 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles. DeGala had a strong service game in recording a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles for host Tiverton, which climbed to 7-1 on the season with a 5-2 triumph over Prout on Wednesday.

Louie Murphy and Meghan Mureddu, Rogers golf

Murphy shot a 45 and Mureddu came through with a 48 on their home Newport Country Club course as the Vikings beat St. Raphael 217-250 and lost to Portsmouth 183-217 on Wednesday.

Mac Dunn, Portsmouth baseball

The senior captain ripped a double, two singles, drove home three runs, scored once and struck out two of the three batters he faced in the fifth and final inning of the game as the Patriots beat Rogers 13-2 in a nonleague game at Cardines Field on Wednesday.

Kate Zmich and Catie Sullivan, Tiverton girls lacrosse

Zmich notched a pair of goals and Sullivan had a goal and assist as the visiting Tigers defeated Johnston 4-1 on Wednesday.

Joe Nardolillo and Kyle Bielawa, Portsmouth golf

Nardolillo finished with medalist honors as he fired a 42 to lead four Portsmouth golfers in the 40s, including Bielawa (45), as the Patriots downed Rogers 183-217 and St. Raphael 183-250 at Newport Country Club on Wednesday.

Monday's stars

Jacob Mello and Matt Stillman, Middletown baseball

Mello cracked a double and two singles, scored two runs and knocked in one, while Stillman had two hits and two runs, but Middletown was overtaken by Barrington in the last inning as the Eagles scored a 7-6 win at Gaudet Middle School on Monday.

Kaden Kluth, Portsmouth boys track

After breaking a long-standing school record last week, Kluth was back at it again Monday when he bested John Kelly’s 40-year old school mark in the 3,000. The senior finished the race with a time of 8 minutes, 50.3 seconds to top the previous best time by 5.7 seconds.

Kluth also won the 1,500 and was a member of the winning 4x400 relay team as Portsmouth beat East Providence 94-56.

“Credit to John for a pretty remarkable 40-year run with that record,” Portsmouth coach Shaun Horgan said. “Kaden knew he had a shot at it, and he's been really training hard for it. He's setting himself up for an amazing finish to his career here at PHS.”

Dylan Walker and Chase Arment, Rogers boys lacrosse

Walker notched five goals and an assist, and Arment assisted on four goals and scored once on Monday as the host Vikings played their most competitive game of the season before falling to Ponaganset 13-10.

Jenna Del Deo and Ryan Poland, Tiverton boys tennis

Ninth-grader Del Deo and first-year player Poland teamed for a 6-1, 6-0 win over their No. 3 doubles foes as the Tigers topped host Portsmouth 6-1 on Monday.

Digby Alexander and Nick Phelan, Middletown golf

Alexander fired a 48 and Phelan shot a 49 as the Islanders swept their Eastern Division opener with a 201-219 decision over East Providence and a 201-272 decision over Rogers on Monday at Wanumetonomy Golf & Country Club.

Gavin Bicho, Portsmouth baseball

The senior left fielder was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and he scored a run and knocked in another as the host Patriots defeated Moses Brown 7-3 to climb to 7-1 in Division I.

Louie Murphy, Rogers golf

Murphy shot and impressive 44 at Wanumetonomy Golf & Country Club, the second best individual score among 16 golfers, as the Vikings lost to Middletown 201-272 and to East Providence 219-272 on Monday.

Keegan Dutelle, Tiverton golf

Dutelle led the Tigers when he shot a 45 on the front nine at Rhode Island Country Club on Monday as Tiverton fell to Portsmouth 205-214 and to host Barrington 168-214 in the Eastern Division opener.

Garren Seibert and Gio Perrotti, Portsmouth boys tennis

Portsmouth’s No. 2 doubles tandem recorded a 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 comeback victory to earn the host Patriots' lone point of the match as Tiverton downed Portsmouth 6-1 on Monday.

Luis Betancourt, Rogers boys track

Betancourt earned three of the eight Rogers event wins as the Vikings downed St. Raphael 101-47 and Mount Hope 117-32 on Monday in Middletown to move to 9-0 in dual-meet competition.

Betancourt took the 110 high hurdles with a time of 19.2 seconds, the 300 hurdles (44.2) and the triple jump with an effort of 39 feet, 9½ inches.

Joe Nardolillo and Nick Essery, Portsmouth golf

Nardolillo and Essery each shot a 49 on the cold and breezy Rhode Island Country Club front nine as the Patriots downed Tiverton 205-214 and fell to host Barrington 168-205 on Monday.

Maria Chytka, Portsmouth girls track

Chytka won the 3,000 meters in a personal-record time of 12 minutes, 0.2 seconds — one of eight event wins for host Portsmouth — as it beat Bay View 84-65 and East Providence 110-31 in a meet on Monday.

“That's a 20-second (personal record) for her from her indoor best,” Portsmouth coach Jeff Rose said. “She's really come a long way this year and I think she has a lot left in the tank the rest of the season.”
