Stars of the Day: Vikings cap regular season with 14-1-1 record

Thursday's stars

Maeve Crowley and Fallon Bagley, Rogers girls soccer

Crowley and Bagley each netted three goals as the Vikings closed the regular season with an 8-1 win over the Times 2/Paul Cuffee/ St. Patrick co-op team Thursday at Braga Park. Rogers finished with a 14-1-1 record and will be the No. 2 seed from Division IV-A in the playoffs.

Anna Simoes and Phoebe Waugh, Rogers girls tennis

The No. 2 doubles team earned the Vikings' lone point with a 7-5, 6-3 win over host Lincoln School’s Pamela Durango-Ramirez and Cleo Trudeau. The top-seeded Lynx prevailed 4-1 in the quarterfinal match over No. 8 seed Rogers, which concluded the season with an 8-8 record.

Eshe Stockton, Portsmouth Middle School girls cross country

Stockton covered Smithfield’s Deerfield Park course with a time of 11 minutes, 55 seconds to finish in ninth place at the state middle school championship. Her effort helped the Patriots score a second-place overall team finish.

Wednesday's stars

Maeve Crowley and Katie Guinan, Rogers girls soccer

Crowley headed home the game winner off a corner kick from Fallon Bagley 14 minutes into the second half, and keeper Guinan made five saves, including one on a penalty kick and another a rocket of a shot with less than 10 minutes.

That kept the Vikings on top as Rogers edged Providence Country Day 2-1 to run their Division IV winning streak to 13 matches on Wednesday at Toppa Field.

Grace Rochelle and Fayth Loper, Rogers girls tennis

The top two players in the lineup handled their business and sent the Vikings to the next round of the playoffs with a 4-2 decision over North Smithfield on Wednesday afternoon in Newport.

Rochelle, playing at No. 1 singles, lost just two games in dispatching Abigail Tremblay 6-2, 6-0, while Loper downed Gracee Sande 6-2, 6-3. Up next for the Vikings is a matchup against unbeaten Lincoln School.

Tuesday's stars

Allie Kaull, Portsmouth girls soccer

Kaitlin Roche scored the goal and Mollyana McGuire had the assist, but it was Allie Kaull who played the key role as unbeaten host Portsmouth tied undefeated Moses Brown 1-1 on Tuesday.

“Allie and the rest of the defense really had a standout game,” Portsmouth coach Lauren Bulk said. “Her speed and patience really helped when containing fast players.”

Gianna Piker, Middletown girls volleyball

Lincoln held off Middletown’s rally that included 16 kills from Piker as the Lions scored a 25-20, 25-20, 21-25, 11-25, 15-11 win over the Islanders on Tuesday to hand Middletown its first home setback of the season.

Kyle Bielawa, Portsmouth boys soccer

The Portsmouth keeper made five saves as the Patriots battled Classical to a scoreless draw on a rainy Tuesday night in Providence. Portsmouth closed Division I regular-season play with a 7-2-5 record and will be the No. 3, No. 4 or No. 5 seed for postseason play.

Hayleigh Korzeniowski, Tiverton girls volleyball

Korzeniowski nailed seven kills and had two aces, a block and 12 digs as the Tigers fell to Juanita Sanchez 12-25, 25-23, 23-25, 21-25 in a Division III match in Providence on Tuesday.

Monday's stars

Emily Maiato, Portsmouth girls soccer

The Portsmouth keeper was the busiest she’s been all season as she made 24 saves and helped the Patriots notch a 6-2 win over host Ponaganset on Monday. Portsmouth remained unbeaten in Division II with a 10-0-1 record and hosts 11-0 Moses Brown on Tuesday.

“Emily had more shots on her during tonight's game than she probably has all season,” Portsmouth coach Lauren Bulk said. “She did an amazing job with the saves and getting the ball distributed back into play. There would have been many more goals allowed if it weren't for her.”

Rylee Donovan and Ellie Margolis, Rogers girls soccer

Donovan notched a pair of goals, and Margolis had a goal and assist for the Vikings, who downed Hope 4-0 on Monday at Braga Park to move to 12-1-1 in the Division IV standings.
