Stars of the Day: Morgan Casey, Caitlin Mediate lead Portsmouth to volleyball upset

Morgan Casey and Caitlin Mediate, Portsmouth girls volleyball

If the Patriots already weren’t considered a threat in Division I, the result Thursday night sealed the deal. Portsmouth defeated defending state champion South Kingstown 3-0 by scores of 27-25, 25-23 and 26-24.

Casey paced the offense with 13 kills, two blocks and an ace, and she received help from Mediate, who dished out 23 assist while contributing eight digs, an ace and a block. Portsmouth is now 3-3 in the division, while South Kingstown slipped to 4-2.

“Awesome match!” Patriots coach Lisa Zabel said.

Wednesday's stars

Kyle Bielawa, Portsmouth boys soccer

The Portsmouth keeper made a pair of diving saves off direct kicks in the first half, and dove and kicked a ball off the line during a scramble after a corner kick with 10 minutes left. He finished with 10 saves and the host Patriots (5-2-3) topped Bishop Hendricken 1-0 on Wednesday for their fourth straight victory.

“He came in about half way through the season and he’s been rock solid,” Portsmouth defender Joe Murphy said of his teammate. "There’s been just like one goal in four or five games, I think. He’s been great.”

Brettyn Newsome, Rogers girls cross country

Newsome placed fifth overall for the Vikings in a couple of slim losses on Wednesday at Exeter-West Greenwich High School. She posted a time of 24 minutes, 9 seconds as Rogers fell to the host team 26-29 and Chariho 24-21.

Kira Parsons (24:17) and Hannah Conroy (24:26) were right behind their teammate, placing sixth and seventh, respectively.

Jack Sigler, Rogers boys cross country

Sigler finished in 10th place Wednesday when Rogers fell to host Exeter-West Greenwich (24-31) and Chariho (15-50). The Viking clocked in with a time of 19 minutes, 49 seconds.

Kate Michael and Nicole Rivera, Rogers girls tennis

Senior Michael earned her first win of the season as she combined with Rivera for a 6-4, 7-6 victory at No. 3 doubles. But the host Vikings, despite playing competitive matches, fell to unbeaten Lincoln School 6-1 on Wednesday.

Manuel Gavito, Portsmouth Abbey boys soccer

Gavito notched his first varsity goal as he headed home a pass from Milo Gardner and the host Ravens topped Bancroft 3-0 on Wednesday.

Cassie Taber and Abigail Parella, Tiverton field hockey

Taber caged two goals and Parella scored one as visiting Tiverton topped Bay View 3-0 on Wednesday. The Tigers have gone 2-0-1 their past three matches to move their Division II-B record to 3-6-3.

Tuesday's stars

Mollyana McGuire, Portsmouth girls soccer

McGuire notched the game’s lone goal on a first-half penalty kick as the host Patriots fended off Lincoln 1-0 on Tuesday to run their Division II record to 6-0-1.

“Player of the game would be Mollyana McGuire,” Portsmouth coach Lauren Bulk said. “Being able to maintain composure on a PK with lots of pressure building around is a great success alone. Mollyana also had many great carries up the outside of the field and set players up for success with crosses into the box.”

Grace Rochelle and Fayth Loper, Rogers girls tennis

Rochelle scored a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles, and Loper came through with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles, but they were the lone Vikings to earn a point as Rogers fell to host Westerly 5-2 on Tuesday.

Olivia Kestler, Middletown girls volleyball

Kestler was at the service line for 28 Middletown points and swatted eight aces while she was there. She also contributing 19 assists for the host Islanders, who swept Burrillville 3-0 on Tuesday.

Talus Nightingale and Kat Deus, Portsmouth girls tennis

Nightingale, who already had qualified to play in the state singles tournament Friday, earned a 6-3, 7-5 win from the top singles slot while Deus won her No. 3 singles match by the same score Tuesday as host Portsmouth bowed to North Kingstown 5-2.

Monday's stars

Ellery Pacheco, Tiverton girls cross country

Sophomore Pacheco, one of two Tiverton runners to compete in Monday’s Coaches Against Cancer Invitational on the 3.1-mile course at Exeter-West Greenwich High School, placed fourth overall with a time of 21 minutes, 57 seconds.

Jack Siglar, Rogers boys cross country

The senior runner finished in fifth place overall in Monday’s Coaches Against Cancer Invitational on Exeter-West Greenwich High School’s 3.1-mile course.

Fallon Bagley, Rogers girls soccer

Bagley netted a goal in each half and the Vikings allowed just one shot on their net as they cruised to a 6-0 win over Central Falls in a Monday morning matinee at Toppa Field.

Kira Parsons, Rogers girls cross country

Parsons ran to a time of 23 minutes, 26 seconds on the 3.1-mile course and finished in ninth place overall in the Coaches Against Cancer Invitational at Exeter-West Greenwich High School on Monday.

Nick Mercer, Tiverton boys cross country

Mercer placed fourth out of 31 finishers who participated in Monday’s Coaches Against Cancer Invitational on Exeter-West Greenwich High School’s 3.1-mile course.
