STARS OF THE DAY: Late rally sends Middletown past rival Rogers in baseball

Saturday's stars

Kaden Kluth and Colby Fahrney, Portsmouth boys track

Kluth and Fahrney were the lone winners for Portsmouth at the Bishop Hendricken Invitational — a precursor to the state meet — on Saturday in Warwick. Kluth took the 800 meters in 1 minute, 52.38 seconds, while Farhney topped the long jump (20 feet, 8 inches).

Luis Betancourt and Kordell O’Brien-Tate, Rogers boys track

The senior placed third in the 110-meter high hurdles at the Bishop Hendricken Invitational on Saturday in Warwick, while O’Brien-Tate was runner-up in the pole vault, clearing 11 feet, 6 inches.

Jason Hayes, Middletown boys track

Hayes was runner-up in the shot put at the Bishop Hendricken Invitational on Saturday in Warwick. The junior launched a toss of 46 feet flat.

Kitty Damon, Portsmouth girls track

Damon was the highest finisher among her Portsmouth teammates at the Mount Pleasant Invitational on Saturday, placing third in the 400 meters with a time of 59.69 seconds.

Friday's stars

AJ Medina, Middletown baseball

Trailing throughout, Middletown scored four times in the top of the seventh inning to post a 4-2 victory over rival Rogers on Friday at Cardines Field. Medina led the charge with a two-run double in the final frame. He finished with two hits, scored a run and swiped a pair of bases against the Vikings.

Luc Lavigueur, Rogers baseball

The University of Maine commit was masterful until the seventh inning, when he allowed four runs — two earned — in a 4-0 loss to rival Middletown on Friday at Cardines Field. Lavigueur struck out 11, didn’t walk a batter and gave up just five hits. He aided his own cause with two hits and driving in one of Rogers’ two runs.

Ben Pacheco, Tiverton boys tennis

According to Tigers coach Bill Phillips, Pacheco played his “best match of the season” in winning a three-setter against Prout on Friday. “Ben attacked the net to put the ball away. Ben also used a steady groundstroke game to outlast his opponent,” Phillips said.

Pacheco’s 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (5) triumph at No. 2 singles helped No. 4 seed Tiverton post a 4-1 win and reach the semifinal round of the Division II playoffs, where the Tigers will meet top-seeded Mount St. Charles.

Shane Temple, Portsmouth boys lacrosse

The freshman attack scored a late game-tying goal off an assist from Owen Cianciolo, then tallied the game-winner shortly after the ensuing faceoff off a feed from Marcus Evans as the No. 3 seed Patriots held off No. 6 seed East Greenwich for a 9-8 win in a Division I quarterfinal match in Portsmouth on Thursday night.

The Patriots move to the semifinals, where they will play No. 2 seed Moses Brown.

Ginnie Hamilton, Middletown girls lacrosse

Hamilton tallied five of the Islanders' seven goals as No. 8 seed Middletown fell to top seed and host Moses Brown 20-7 in a Division I quarterfinal playoff match on Thursday.

Middletown coach Blair Alexander said, “The officials told me at the end that we had an inspiring team who gave it their best and never gave up for the whole game. I couldn’t agree more with their assessment.”

The Seton Hall commit eclipsed the 200-strikeout plateau for the season in hurling the Islanders to a 14-4 victory over rival Rogers on Thursday at Toppa Field.

Gracie Keys and Gabrielle Pires, Portsmouth softball

Keyes went 2-for-3 with a fourth-inning home run, and Pires executed two sacrifice bunts to bring in two runs for Portsmouth, which dropped an 11-4 decision to Narragansett on Thursday.

Wednesday's stars

Karissa Dupuis and Ella Bolano, Midletown softball

Dupuis pitched a complete-game four- hitter and struck out 10, and Bolan whacked pair of base hits as Middletown shut down host Prout 2-0 on Wednesday.

Jason Potvin and Chris Letendre, Tiverton baseball

Potvin tossed a five-inning no-hitter and struck out seven, while Letendre paced the offense with a triple, two singles and four RBIs as visiting Tiverton blanked Chariho 10-0 on Wednesday in its final regular-season game.

Darren Carter and Luc Lavigueur, Rogers baseball

Carter, a freshman, pitched four innings, allowed two runs and struck out three and Lavigueur connected for a pair of base hits as the host Vikings fell to West Warwick 10-1 on Wednesday.

“(Carter) has been one of our most consistent defensive players,” Rogers coach Anthony Borgueta said. “He proved he could also do it on the mound as well.”

Abigail Monkevicz and Morgan Rodrigues, Tiverton softball

The two players each went 4-for-4, with Monkevicz smacking two doubles and two singles and knocking in five runs and Rodrigues ripping a double, three singles and scoring four runs. They led the Tigers to a 14-0, five-inning win over Exeter-West Greenwich.

Aiden Chen and Maciej Tabak, Portsmouth boys track

Chen ran to a second-place finish in the 400 meters with a time of 53.5 seconds, finished third in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 6 inches, placed sixth in the 200 (24.78) and along with Tabak was a member of host Portsmouth’s fourth-place 4x100 relay team at Wednesday’s freshman state championship meet.

Tabak was runner-up in the 300 intermediate hurdles (45.43) and placed fifth in the 110 high hurdles (19.02) as the Patriots scored 50 team points and finished in fourth place.

Kayden Thomas and Kaylon Hazard, Rogers boys track

Thomas won the shot put with a heave of 38 feet, 8¾ inches and was tops in the discus (114-5), while Hazard finished fourth in both the high jump (5 feet, 4 inches) and long jump (18-3) as the Vikings scored 33 points and placed seventh out of 27 teams that earned points at Wednesday’s freshman state championship meet.

Grey Landy, Tiverton boys track

Landy came through with the Tigers' top individual effort as he placed fifth in the javelin with a 114 feet, 1 inch toss and he also was a member of a Tiverton scoring relay team at Wednesday’s freshman state championship meet.

Tuesday's stars

Meghan Mureddu, Rogers golf

Mureddu finished fifth in the girls state championship tournament Tuesday at Warwick Country Club. She shot a 45 on the front nine and a 41 coming in to finish for an 86.

The senior finished strong, with two birdies and a par — one of five pars she had on the day — to edge North Smithfield’s Samantha Tinsley by a stroke for the fifth spot and earn all-state honors for the second straight year.

Alistair McClurg, Middletown boys tennis

McClurg, playing No. 3 singles, rallied for a 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 win to secure the lone solo triumph for the Islanders, and the doubles teams swept three matches as No. 7 seed Middletown edged No. 10 Cranston West 4-3 on Tuesday at Gaudet Middle School.

“Alistair earned our team's MVP award this season because he has come through for us like this all year,” Middletown coach Eric Wright said. “He knew we needed his game in order to win the match. We have been relying on him all season and he has been there every time we needed him.”

Tim Lopes and John Victor, Portsmouth boys tennis

Portsmouth’s No. 2 doubles team scored a 6-2, 6-4 triumph Tuesday, but that was the only victory for the No. 9 seed Patriots, who bowed to No. 8 and host Ponaganset 4-1 in a Division II preliminary-round playoff match.

Devin Bordner, Tiverton softball

Bordner whacked a double and a single, scored two runs and had two RBIs while pitching four hitless, scoreless innings and striking out three, She combined with Abigail DeMello on a five-inning, no-hitter in the Tigers' 11-0 victory over host Barrington on Tuesday.

Alex Clemmey, Bishop Hendricken baseball

Middletown resident Clemmey completed regular-season play with a five-inning, one-hitter and struck out 10 in the host Hawks' 11-0 victory over Toll Gate.

Keara McEnroe and Makenna Gilman, Middletown girls lacrosse

McEnroe netted four goals and goalie Gilman made 15 saves as the No. 8 seed Islanders took down No. 9 East Greenwich 10-9 in a Division I preliminary-round game on Tuesday in Middletown.

“Moving on to face (top-seeded) Moses Brown Thursday,” Middletown coach Blair Alexander said. “Keara McEnroe led the offense. Makenna Gilman totally rocked it in goal. Defense was an unstoppable unit as always. Super proud of this team!”

Waylon Vazquez and Cole Milburn, Rogers baseball

Vazquez pitched two scoreless innings, allowed a hit and struck out two, and Milburn had a base hit and scored a run as the host Vikings bowed to Exeter-West Greenwich 8-3 on Tuesday.

“This is Waylon’s first year pitching,” Rogers coach Anthony Borgueta said. “He has worked extremely hard and has made amazing progress. We are all so proud of him.  Cole is a fierce competitor. He competes whenever given the chance. That's all a coach can ask.”

Noah Leys and Matt Williams, Middletown baseball

Leys pitched four innings, allowed three earned runs, struck out six and also had a base hit, and Williams stroked a double, one of just four hits for the Islanders, who fell to Moses Brown 9-0 on Tuesday in Providence.

Monday's stars

Kamdyn Rego and Cayden Rego, Tiverton baseball

Kamdyn Rego pitched four innings and allowed just one unearned run on the mound and came through with a double, two singles and an RBI at the plate. Cayden Rego ripped a double and two base hits as the Tigers bowed to Narragansett 10-6 in 10 innings on Monday.

Joe Nardolillo, Portsmouth golf

Nardolillo earned medalist honors with a season-best 37 on Monday, and the Patriots had two other golfers each shoot 41 as they defeated Tiverton 168-199 and East Providence 168-205 at Green Valley Country Club in a play-in match to capture the Eastern Division’s third berth in the upcoming team state championship meet.

Karissa Dupuis, Middletown softball

Dupuis fired a no-hitter, struck out 12 and hit a ground-rule double, but the Islanders couldn’t push across any runs as they fell to Prout 1-0 on Monday.

Matt Craig and Ethan Arruda, Tiverton boys lacrosse

Craig scored a goal and had two assists, and goalie Arruda came up with a dozen saves as the Tigers and Mount Hope battled to a 6-6 draw in a non-league game in Bristol on Monday.

John Mass and Mac Dunn, Portsmouth baseball

Mass threw six shutout innings and struck out eight and Dunn delivered the key hit — a two-run double in the second inning — as the Patriots downed Central 3-0 on Monday in Providence.

Keegan Dutelle, Tiverton golf

Dutelle shot a 44 to lead the Tigers, but it wasn’t enough to stop Portsmouth as Tiverton bowed 168-199 at Green Valley Country Club on Monday.
