Stars of the Day: Rogers, Middletown girls basketball get wins. These players led the way.

Middletown and Rogers high school duos led their girls basketball team to easy road victories on Thursday night.

Danaysha Cherry and Maeve Crowley, Rogers girls basketball

Trailing by four points after the first quarter Rogers stepped up its game the rest of the way as the Vikings topped host East Providence 52-20 on Thursday. Cherry came through with 20 points and 10 rebounds and Crowley scored 20 points as the Vikings outscored the Townies 45-9 over the last three quarters to move to 8-5 in the Division I standings.

Ginnie Hamilton and Lily Sokol, Middletown girls basketball

Ginnie Hamilton scored 15 points and grabbed a dozen rebounds to help Middletown subdue Burrillville on Thursday night.

Hamilton and Sokol helped stop the Islanders three-game losing streak as Middletown downed host Burrillville 42-23 on Thursday. Hamilton and Sokol each scored 15 points and Hamilton also snatched a dozen rebounds as Middletown went to 7-6 in the Division III standings.

Sam Bettencourt and Abby Monkevicz, Tiverton girls basketball

Forced to carry the scoring load in the absence of high scorer Jenna Del Deo, the two seniors did their best but it wasn’t enough as the host Tigers bowed to Cumberland 31-23 on Thursday night. Bettencourt and Monkevicz each scored eight points as Tiverton dropped to 4-8 in Division II.

Brynn Palmer and Madelyn Plowden, Rogers girls swimming

Palmer and Plowden victories helped the Vikings hold off Cranston West 53-41 on Thursday at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport. Palmer won the 200 and 500 freestyle races, was a member of the winning 200 freestyle quartet and, along with Plowden, was a member of the victorious 400 freestyle relay team. Plowden also chipped in with a 100 backstroke race win.

Nick Bodycoat, Rogers boys swimming

Bodycoat won the 500 freestyle and the 100 backstroke races but the outmanned Vikings couldn’t earn enough points to stay with Cranston West as they fell 58-20 at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport on Thursday.
