Stars of the Day: Spring sports season starts with highlight performances

Local high school boys lacrosse, tennis and baseball teams came through with victories in their regular-season openers and the Portsmouth golf team won the Newport County High School Golf Preview Tournament on Monday.

Chase Arment and Dylan Walker, Rogers boys lacrosse

The two seniors combined for 11 goals and five assists as the Vikings opened Division-III play with a 19-1 verdict over East Providence on Monday at Braga Park. Arment had six goals and three assists and Walker contributed five goals and two assists.

John Mass and Caleb Banks, Portsmouth baseball

Portsmouth scored all its runs in the third inning as it took down Mount Hope 4-1 in its Division-One opener on Monday in Bristol. Mass pitched into the fifth inning, allowed just two hits and struck out eight and had two base hits. Banks was 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.

Ben Sowa and Josh Guillemette, Tiverton tennis

Sowa and Guillemette earned singles wins and the host Tigers benefitted from a pair of forfeit victories as they downed Ponaganset 5-2 on Monday in their Division-II opener. Sowa scored a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles and Guillemette had a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles.

“Ben used a steady baseline attack moving his opponent around,” Tiverton coach Bill Philips said. “Josh used his first serve to set up his approach to the net (where he) put many points away.”

Christian Berluti and Keaton O’Shea, Middletown boys lacrosse

O’Shea scored the unassisted, game-winning goal in overtime as the host Islanders edged Cumberland 8-7 in their Division-II opener. O’Shea also had three assists while goalie Berluti came up with 13 saves and also scored a goal.

Evan Vogl and Nick Waycuilis, Portsmouth boys volleyball

Vogl was a perfect 7-for-7 from the service line and Waycuilis swatted four kills as the host Patriots dropped a 3-0 decision to Johnston in the first-ever boys high school volleyball game at Portsmouth.

Kyle Bielawa and Vincent Milici, Portsmouth golf

Bielawa shot a 43 and Milici carded a 44 as the Patriots won the Newport County High School Golf Preview Tournament on Monday at Wanumetonomy Golf and Country Club. Portsmouth finished with a 194-team total that included a 47 from Joe Nardolillo. Middletown, led by Nick Phelan’s 49, was second with a 212 total. Rogers (264) finished third and Tiverton (267) was fourth. Maddie Murphy led the Vikings with a 57 while Keegan Dutelle’s 59 was tops for the Tigers.
