Stars of the weekend: Owen, Spaner help lift Portsmouth baseball over Tiverton

Here's a look at the scores and highlights from Saturday's high school action in Newport County.

Damon Owen and Nick Spaner, Portsmouth baseball

The Portsmouth batterymates combined to keep Tiverton bats in check as the host Patriots downed the Tigers 4-1 in a non-league game on Saturday. Owen pitched four innings, allowed four hits and a run, and struck out six with Spaner making the calls behind the plate. Spaner stroked an inside-the-park homer, a base hit and had two RBIs while Owen came through with a double, RBI and scored a run.

Kyle Rogers and Cayden Rego, Tiverton baseball

Rogers pitched a complete game and Rego provided most of the Tiverton offense when Division-I host Portsmouth topped the Division-II Tigers 4-1 on Saturday. Rogers hurled six innings, allowed nine hits, three earned runs and struck out seven. Rego had two of his team’s four hits and knocked in the lone run.

Jacob Mello and Evan LeVasseur, Middletown baseball

Mello and LeVasseur played key roles as visiting Middletown defeated Barrington 12-4 on Friday in a Division-II contest. Mello had four singles and a walk, drove home three runs and scored two. LeVasseur had a double, RBI, scored two runs and was the winning pitcher. La Vasseur allowed three hits and a run while striking out nine in five innings of work.

Matt Lynch and Conor Donahue, Rogers baseball

Rogers got the hitting and the pitching as it blasted Juanita Sanchez 20-3 in five innings in a Division-III contest in Providence on Friday. Lynch led the offense with a double, two singles and six RBIs. Freshman Donahue pitched four innings and allowed a hit, run and struck out nine in earning the victory.

Jason Potvin and Nick Mercer, Tiverton baseball

Potvin and Mercer combined to strike out a dozen batters as the Tigers edged host Narragansett 5-4 in eight innings in a Division-II game on Friday. Potvin fanned eight while pitching into the seventh inning and reliever Mercer struck out four in earning the victory in the Division-II game on Friday.

Sam Bettencourt and Abbey DeMello, Tiverton softball

Bettencourt rapped three doubles and drove home three runs and winning pitcher DeMello – who struck out seven – went 2-for-2 with three RBIs as host Tiverton downed Cranston East 17-6 in a Division-III contest on Thursday.
