Stars of the Weekend: Taunton wrestling wins Cape Cod Invitational

SANDWICH — Taunton wrestling is once again top of the pack.

The Tigers took the top spot Saturday at the Cape Cod Invitational at Sandwich High School, with ten wrestlers making it to the finals and both Brandon Mendes (120) and Ben Mandeville (145) winning their respective weight classes.

Finishing second in their weight classes were Mike Leskoski (106), Ryan Jones (113), Anthony Vieira (126), Xavier Sandoval (138), Christian Balmain (160), Ethan Harris (182), Peter Ye (195) and Logan Frank (220). Elijah Prophete (170) finished third, while John Mandeville (152) and Robert Tran (285) finished fourth.

The Trojans took two out of three contests at the Whitman-Hanson quad, defeating both the host Panthers and Warriors but falling to the Eagles to move to 12-3 overall on the season.

Brent von Magnus, Lance Pepe, Nathan Leach and Dominic Silivia won all three of their respective matches while Jack Alves won both matches he competed in. Fletcher Rinke, Chris Hogg and Christian Curley won two of their three while Brendan Rosher, Tyler Barefoot, Sam Savell, Jackson Rinke, Paul Callanan and Charlie Swenson all came away with a win.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Bridgewater-Raynham vs. Brookline

The Bridgewater-Raynham boys basketball team lost its home non-conference game against Brookline, 80-68.

The Trojans play at Westwood on Wednesday.

HOCKEY

North Attleboro 5, Taunton 0

The Tigers were shut out by the Red Rocketeers in Hockomock League action on the road at New England Sports Village and are now 3-5-1 on the season.

Dighton-Rehoboth/Seekonk 4, Somerset Berkley 3

The Falcons overcame a close challenge from their South Coast Conference rival Raiders on the road at the Driscoll Arena to improve to 9-0 on the season.

Junior forward Liam Fecteau scored twice for DRS, while junior forwards Noah Bastis and Matt Cunha also found the back of the net.

Scituate 8, Southeastern/Bristol-Plymouth 2

The Hawks fell to the Sailers in non-league action on the road at the Gallo Ice Arena and are now 5-2 on the season.

BOYS INDOOR TRACK

Taunton: 16th Place at MSTCA Division I State Relays

The Tigers finished 16th out of 20 teams in the MSTCA Division I State Relays at the Reggie Lewis Center Saturday.

The sprint medley team of GJ Mualis, Dmitrius Shearrion, Aidden Fitting and Conal Scully finished fourth with a time of 3:43.17, earning a medal, while the distance medley team of Ryan Strawbridge, Scully, Andrew Cali and Brayden Cali finished seventh but broke the school record with a time of 4:36.3.

Dighton-Rehoboth: 10th Place at MSTCA Division IV State Relays

The Falcons finished 10th out of 18 teams in the MSTCA Division IV State Relays at the Reggie Lewis Center Saturday.

The high jump team finished second overall, with Justus Morgan, Dario St. James and Hendrix Pray combining for 5.01 meters. The long jump team of St. James, Matthew Suprenard and James Suprenard finished seventh with a combined distance of 15.05 meters, while the shot put team of Destin Michener, Kevin Gousie and Samuel Brown also finished seventh with a combined distance of 32.72 meters.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Taunton: 10th Place at MSTCA Division I State Relays

The Tigers finished 10th out of 18 teams in the MSTCA Division I State Relays at the Reggie Lewis Center Saturday.

The 4x800 relay team of Nia Mainer-Smith, Caelen O’Leary, Kiley Quinlan and Emersyn DePonte finished second but broke both the school record and qualified for Nationals with a time of 9:59.16, while the 4x4 team of Mainer-Smith, O’Leary, Phylicia Dias and Brooke Aldrich finished third with a time of 4:15.20.

Dighton-Rehoboth: 10th Place at MSTCA Division IV State Relays

The Falcons finished 10th out of 18 schools at the MSTCA Division IV State Relays at the Reggie Lewis Center Saturday.

The shot put team of Madelyn Kelley, Kate DiSanto and Ryann Welzel finished second with a combined distance of 26.50 meters.
