Start Spreading The News: New York reception launches centennial celebration
NEW YORK — Palm Beachers know that when it comes to parties, distance is no obstacle.
Look at all the "Friends of ..." groups — Versailles, the Uffizzi Gallery, British Art, the Israel Museum.
Come summer, everybody's winging off on a fact-finding mission to see how their donation was spent.
The supporters of the Salvation Army's West Palm Beach Corps don't need to do that. They can just drive across the bridge to see their money at work.
But a quick flight to cooled-down, low-humidity New York for a cocktail party kickoff? Totally worth the trip.

Susan and Hunter Cushing welcomed the friends and supporters of the Salvation Army to their New York digs for a reception to honor the organization's centennial year.
The event took place Sept.14 and also served as a kickoff for the annual Palm Beach gala.
In addition to cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, music and chat about the coming season, the evening also included a preview of plans for "Marjorie Merriweather Post's Paradise Ball."
The white-tie ball celebrates the centennial of the Salvation Army's West Palm Beach Corps, which was established in 1922 — the same year Mrs. Post purchased the land where she would build Mar-a-Lago.
Allison Pataki, author of "The Magnificent Lives of Marjorie M. Post" and her mother Libby, former first lady of New York, were among the guests, as were Sharon Bush, Karen Klopp, Michael Reinert, CeCe Black, Anne Smither, Anthony Bailey, Harry Sherman, Jean Shafiroff, Stuart Holden, Amanda Holden, Samantha Haywood, and David Patrick Columbia.
Interior designer, decorator and producer Holly Holden is chairwoman for the gala, which takes place Dec. 10 at the Mar-a-Lago Club.
Lady Henrietta Spencer Churchill is honorary chairwoman. Farley Rentschler will serve as junior chairwoman.
