State baseball: Unseeded MACCRAY gets No. 2 Randolph at state

Jun. 12—ST. CLOUD — The MACCRAY baseball team learned who its first-round opponent will be in the state Class A tournament Tuesday.

The Wolverines play Randolph at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the St. Cloud Municipal Athletic Complex's Joe Faber Field. That's the home field of the Northwoods League's St. Cloud Rox.

MACCRAY was unseeded in the on-line coaches' seeding meeting Saturday and learned that Randolph would be its opponent by random draw.

Each coach in the tournament seeded all the teams except for their own. The top five seeds are then announced. The three unseeded teams then play the top three seeds via a random draw.

MACCRAY is the Section 3A champion and has a 15-6 record. The Wolverines have a No. 23 QRF power ranking, according to the website Minnesota-Scores.Net, which is used by some sections for post-season seeding.

Randolph is the Section 4A champion. The Rockets have a 22-1 record and a No. 5 QRF ranking.

The MACCRAY/Randolph winner plays the winner of No. 3 New York Mills (22-3) and Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale (11-14) at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Cloud's Faber Field.

The Class A state championship is 10 a.m. Friday at Target Field in Minneapolis.

On the other side of the Class A bracket, No. 1 Hayfield (22-2) plays New Ulm Cathedral (22-3) at 10:30 a.m. and No. 4 East Grand Forks Sacred Heart (21-3) faces No. 5 South Ridge of Culver (17-7).

Hayfield is the defending state champion.
