State commission approves state funding of school construction projections for Miami Valley schools

The Ohio Facilities Construction Commission announced Thursday the approval of more than $307 million in state funding for five school construction projects, according to a news release Thursday.

This includes over $157 million for West Carrollton and Xenia schools.

“OFCC’s action today supports student success in local communities across the state,” said Ohio Governor Mike DeWine. “The investments being made in these schools will create safe, modern, and flexible learning environments that promote opportunities for academic excellence and prepare students for a successful future.”

Over $124 million in state funding was approved for the West Carrollton city school district to build a new elementary school for grades 2-4 and one new middle and high school for grades, 7-12, the release said.

“I am beyond excited for our students, staff and the entire community,” said Doctor Andrea Townsend, school superintendent. “I am appreciative of the community members who helped make this possible.”

The state also approved at least $37 million in funding for the Xenia school district to build a new middle school for grades 6-8, as well as renovations and an addition to Xenia High School, OFCC said.

“We are obviously elated about this additional funding from the state,” said Dr. Gabriel Lofton, superintendent of Xenia schools. “I am proud today we were able to capitalize on our solid financial position as a district to take of this opportunity when it presented itself- essentially allowing us to complete two school buildings for the price of one.”

OFCC also approved funding for projects in Medina, Columbiana and Lake counties.

“The condition of school facilities impact student achievement, as well as teacher engagement and satisfaction,” said Cheryl J. Lyman, OFCC Executive Director. “These schools will be designed and constructed using best practices and last for generations.”
