State cross country roundup: Chamberlain girls earn second place in Class A team chase

Oct. 23—HURON — For the second consecutive season, Chamberlain earned second place as a team in the Class A girls state cross country meet on Saturday at Broadland Creek Golf Course.

Powered by junior Kinsey Evans' eighth-place finish, the Cubs scored 82 points, just ahead of third-place Custer's 84. Sioux Falls Christian won the competition with 30 team points, including three runners among the top-nine point-scorers. In 2021, Chamberlain was second to Custer and edged Sioux Falls Christian by one point.

Evans finished in a time of 19:27.49, while Aine Graesser was 26th overall (20:11.13). Senior Allison Hough finished 32nd overall (20:31.52) and Kylah Biggins rounded out Chamberlain's scoring with a 46th-place finish (21:05.72).

Sioux Valley's Isabelle Bloker won the race, as the Cossacks' sophomore won in a time of 18:32.67, with Sioux Falls Christian's Natalie Smith taking second place (18:44.53).

Kimball/White Lake's Autumn Baker finished in 14th place in a time of 19:38.67, while Ethan/Parkston's Ella Pollreisz was 18th (19:48.01) to round out the area's placewinners.

In the Class A boys competition, Belle Fourche's Sawyer Clarkson won the race in a time of 15:30.28, with teammate Lane Krautschun taking second at 16:06.24. Evan Bartelt, of Ethan/Parkston, was the lone area runner to finish in the top-25, scoring 16th place in a time of 17:06.71.

In the Class B boys race, won by Canistota's Josiah Schroeder, Freeman Academy/Marion took third as a team, thanks to the strong finish of Tavin Schoreder in second place and Finley McConniel in eighth place (17:53.08). The Bearcats had 53 points, ahead of Ipswich (55) but behind Philip (20) and Northwestern (38).

In addition to Mitchell Christian's Silas Holdeman in sixth place, other area top-25 finishers included Howard's Caden Schwader taking 11th place (17:57.33) and Gregory's Fin Adams in 19th place (18:10.13) and Luke Sinclair in 22nd place (18:14.66). Avon's Tyler Tjeerdsma finished in 25th place (18:25.05) to earn a medal. Mitchell Christian was seventh in the team scoring (71) and Gregory was eighth (87).

In Class B, Emery Larson, of Chester Area, dominated the girls field from wire to wire, winning in 18:15.24 and by a margin of 1 minute, 4 seconds. Northwestern's Ella Boekelheide finished second (19:19.24).

Two area standouts finished in the top-10, with Freeman Academy/Marion senior Jada Koerner closing her cross country career in eighth place (20:25.73) and Gregory freshman Asia VanDerWerff finishing ninth (20:37.17). Andes Central/Dakota Christian's Anna DeHaan earned a state medal with a 23rd-place finish (21:27.64).

Rapid City Stevens' Simeon Birnbaum won his second consecutive state championship in cross country in the Class AA boys race, continuing his distance dominance in South Dakota, winning in a time of 15:16.19, finishing nearly a minute ahead of second-place Cashton Johnson, of Harrisburg.

Mitchell freshman Hunter Patton was the leading Kernel boys runner on the day, finishing in 45th place in a time of 17:35.27. Elijah Schroeder was 120th in the field with a time of 19:43.79, and Austin Reimnitz finished in 128th place in a time of 21:12.36 for Mitchell, which did not compete as a team.

Rapid City Stevens, with three finishers in the top-10, scored 122 points to win the Class AA boys team title. Yankton was second with 142 points, followed by Sioux Falls Lincoln at 146, Sturgis at 151 and Rapid City Central at 181 for fifth place.

In the girls race, Sioux Falls Ali Bainbridge won the Class AA individual championship in a time of 17:26.09, finishing 24 seconds ahead of Libby Castelli, of O'Gorman.

For the Kernel girls, London Schroeder had a personal-best time of 21:01.74, taking 59th place in the Class AA field of 122 runners. Aspen Evers finished in 78th place in a time of 21:42.56, and teammate Alexis Daley finished in 82nd place in a time of 21:47.27.

Rapid City Stevens was the team champion in the girls race, scoring 96 points, followed by Brandon Valley with 100 points. Sioux Falls Lincoln was third with 115, followed by Sioux Falls O'Gorman at 126 and Rapid City Central at 127 for fifth place.
