State Fair of Texas has a new admission policy this year for 17 and under after this time

State Fair of Texas officials added a new rule for this year’s festivities as an added safety measure: All minors will have to be accompanied by an adult in the evenings.

The State Fair of Texas — which starts Sept. 29 — prides itself with being a family-friendly event that has run since 1886.

Who has to be accompanied by an adult at the State Fair?

This year’s minor policy will apply to all children age 17 and younger after 5 p.m.

All accompanying parents, guardians and chaperones ages 21 and older must present a valid ID upon entering the fair starting at 5 p.m. daily.

No more than six minors can accompany an adult at one time.

Why is the State Fair of Texas implementing a minor policy?

Last year, a group of fairgoers ran through the fairgrounds which led to reports of a shooting, NBC DFW reported. Dallas police said the reports were investigated and were found to be unsubstantiated.

Jaime Navarro, State Fair of Texas chief operating officer, said in a statement that public safety is fair officials’ top priority.

“Comparable policies are being instated industry-wide, and the State Fair of Texas believes this policy is the best course of action to enhance the existing safety measures for all fairgoers, vendors and employees,” Navarro said.

The State Fair of Texas runs from Sept. 29 to Oct. 22 with tickets on sale now.
