State health report: 4 deaths, 269 new COVID-19 cases on Cape and Islands

There were 8,950 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Massachusetts, increasing the total number of cases to 1,821,987 since the pandemic began, the state Department of Public Health reported on Thursday.

In their weekly report, state officials also noted 932 new probable cases of coronavirus for a statewide total of 165,398.

As of Aug. 10, 144 patients were primarily hospitalized with COVID-19-related illnesses and 560 total patients hospitalized with COVID-19, the DPH reported.

Fifty-seven patients were in intensive care units, or ICUs, and 12 patients were intubated.

Closer to home, in Thursday's weekly report, DPH officials said Barnstable County posted 239 new coronavirus cases, for a total 42,332 since the pandemic started. Dukes County (Martha's Vineyard) had 12 new coronavirus cases, for a to-date total 4,044. Nantucket County reported 18 new cases, for a total 3,679.

These numbers are slightly lower than last week’s report, which showed 333 cases and five deaths on the Cape and Islands.

The state’s seven-day positivity rate was 8.05%. The 14-day positivity rate for Barnstable County came in at 8.78%, and 8.32% for Dukes and Nantucket counties.

Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis was treating 19 patients with coronavirus, none of whom were in the ICU. Falmouth Hospital reported eight patients, with one patient in the ICU. Martha’s Vineyard Hospital reported one patient being treated for coronavirus, and Nantucket Cottage Hospital had two.

DPH officials said Thursday there were 39 new deaths statewide among people with confirmed cases of COVID-19, increasing the total deaths to 19,978 since the pandemic began.

There were 22 deaths statewide from probable cases of COVID-19. The number of deaths from probable cases is 1,307 in Massachusetts.

Barnstable County had four new deaths, the DPH reported. The total probable and confirmed deaths from COVID-19 is 628 in Barnstable County. There were no new deaths in Dukes and Nantucket counties combined, for a total fatality count of 20 since the pandemic began in March 2020.
