Before legislators and executive officeholders can begin the business of the 103rd Illinois General Assembly, inaugurations will be held in Springfield today and Wednesday.

For Democrats, Wednesday will continue their supermajorities in both chambers where they gained five seats in the Illinois House of Representatives and lost a seat in the state Senate. Republicans look to rebuild with new party leadership in the House and Senate following the legislative inauguration day on Wednesday.

The events for both inauguration days will all be based in Springfield but at varying locations. Here's what you need to know.

Executive inaugural ceremonies

Gov. JB Pritzker, first lady MK Pritzker, Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton and second gentleman Bryan Echols first attended an open house at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Old State Capitol.

Today brings two events, starting first with the inaugural ceremony at the Bank of Springfield Center. Pritzker, along with other statewide officeholders, will be sworn in at 11:30 a.m. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m. Tickets free-of-charge can be reserved online.

Comptroller Susana Mendoza will be having her open house starting at 2 p.m. inside the statehouse in Senate Committee Room 409.

The state fairgrounds will be the site of an evening celebration at 7 p.m. today. Held at the Exposition Building, the Governor JB Pritzker and Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton’s Inaugural Committee says general sale tickets will be sold depending on availability. Ticket proceeds will go toward charity organizations in Illinois.

Legislative inauguration day

The 103rd Illinois General Assembly will begin Wednesday with the swearing in of state senators and representatives.

The Senate Inauguration will begin at noon at the House of Representatives chamber at the Old State Capitol. Locally, it will be state Sen. Doris Turner, D-Springfield, being sworn into her first full term after defeating state Rep. Sandy Hamilton, R-Springfield, in the 48th Senate District race. Turner was appointed in February 2021 to fill a vacancy left by Deputy Gov. Andy Manar.

The House of Representatives has its inauguration at the University of Illinois-Springfield also at noon.
